KD Lang's Listeners - Where To Start? I'm not really familiar with her music aside from "Hallelujah" remake and the "Sing It Loud" album which I love very much & think its one of the best produced albums in the past 10 years.. Ready to dig in deeper though, any idea where to start? | |

Personally I would recommend the 'Drag' album.
It was produced by Craig Street who also produced Meshell Ndegeocello's "Bitter' album which happens to be one of my favorite albums. . . Now that you’ve mentioned it, I vaguely remember hearing about “Drag” in a podcast long ago (wanna say “The Music Snobs” but not sure), decided to give it a go & goodness

totally different song than the one I listened to earlier 
I'm definitly more gravitated toward this type of production, although I made a mental note to check "Shadowland as well. And I'm gonna look into Torch & Twang as well (Thanks Purplethunder)

You've got to take the time to turn the lights down low and listen to "Ingenue" in its entirety. Maybe it's just me, but that's what turned me into a huge kd fan. Then, hit "All You Can Eat" and "Invincible Summer" -- all of these are with Ben Mink producing or otherwise involved, and are so rich in arrangements and melody... and of course her voice is divine. |

still gulping up "Drag" & its taking me to good places. Meanwhile I'm reading about her albums chronologically. Its such a good feeling to get excited about a certain artist for the first time.
While you're at it, check out KD Lang's film debut in the 1991 indie movie Salmonberries. I really love her compelling performance in this movie; in fact, I think I'll watch it again this weekend, for the first time in years... Invincible Summer is a great album too, Consequences of Falling is sublime. I dig some of her case/lang/veirs stuff, more when she is the featured singer. Drag is probably her "masterpiece" and deservedly so but her recent stuff has been really powerful and I agree about Sing It Back, it's an album one can hit play and escape with the artist without any filler. My favorite type. If u dig house music, my first exposure to k.d.'s vocals were Junior Vasquez's long remix of "Theme From The Valley of the Dolls" where there is a slow vocal remix in the middle of the dance track. Did you know KD Lang sang back up on some Wendy & Lisa tracks? kd admitted in the Drag era that she was in love with a woman who was "as good as married" when she wrote 1992's Ingenue. Turns out our purple girl, Wendy Melvoin, was her inspiration. Image searches from that era shows kd and Wendy attending the premiere of Madonna's Truth Or Dare movie (kd hugging up on Madonna). |

Completely agree! This is my fav cd. kd has one the best voices ever. Tony Bennett has comments numerous times over the years that her voice is "real". | |

PORTLAND, Ore. — There’s a touch of silver now in K. D. Lang’s punk pompadour, which she still clips herself with whatever is at hand: grape shears, cuticle scissors, a paring knife. A Truly Western Experince 1984 & Angel with a Lariat 1987 (with the reclines) is where her recording career began. She was very rockabilly (she used be called punk/country). But Shadowland, where she was produced by the legendary Owen Bradley (Pasty Cline), is a great place to start. Busy Being Blue is a stand out track. She tackles a few modern tracks like (Western Stars - Chirs Issack), and some standards Don't Let the Stars Get In Your Eyes, Lock, Stock & Teardrops, Down to my Last Cigarette. This album started her one her way, to getting some recognition across the border in the US (country market). They never would get over her sexuality (of course).
Not to be missed is follow up album with the Reclines - Absolute Torch and Twang. This album solidified her as a national superstar in her homeland Canada.
