THE CURE AT 40 what do they mean to you?

I adore the cure there catalogues amazing robert smith is such a unique talent and brilliant songwriter the first cure song I remember was Friday Im IN love which came out when I was 12 I remember liking the song but at the time wasnt that bothered about music but as I got older ive loved discovering all there great albums and songs and there always a main stay on my play list. I love how in some of there songs the lyrics dont even come in till the 3 minute mark the way he builds and structures songs Ive always loved.

I'm just like everybody else I need love.....and water.

i used to be a cure completist and have an expansive collection of original press b-sides, but i gave up on them after about my third listen to 'bloodflowers'...i'm just not liking much of anything post-'wish'. they've still got it live, but i'm just not digging the new studio stuff.

also (and at the risk of having your thread moved to the 'marketplace: for sale/trade' forum [because, you know, it can be{or might have at one time been} bought, sold or traded]), i'll mention that the 'mixed up: deluxe edition' comes out today...it includes 'mixed up', 'torn down' and a third disc of previously unavailable (?) remixes/extended versions. all curated and (re)mastered by robert smith. i'm kind of curious to listen to that, even though i didn't really enjoy the 'mixed up' album proper.

I ended my long relationship with them after hearing the self-titled album. The 80s releases still sound great to me and everything else up to Bloodflowers is worth a playback occasionally, but beyond those, I couldn't relate to their sound anymore.

I really really loved Underneath The Stars. It felt like mid eighties return to form. That was the last hurrah to me/for me.

I feel the same way. Also, i prefer their less poppy songs more than i do the others.

I would consider them in my top 5 of post punk bands. They would be a distant 4th to Killing Joke, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and The Fall. And just above Public Image Ltd.

Rest in Peace Bettie Boo. See u soon.

That is how i feel too. Up to Bloodflowers I liked everything they did apart from the original Mixed up Album and Wild Mood Swings where only half of the songs were decent. Bloodflowers was really good but the self titled album that came after it was just awful from start to finish. Even Roberts voice on that album was unlistenable too my ears. Did not even bother to listen to 4.13 Dream.

The Cure are one of those groups that I’ve always been aware of and liked what I’ve heard, but never got into. I really must address that.

I share the same sentiment as many others on this thread. I was a rabid Cure fan when I was younger. I LOVED every album through, and including, Wish. Wild Mood Swings was a bit of a misstep, in my opinion. Bloodflowers was better. The albums after that have been forgettable, save for a couple of decent new tracks on the later hits packages. I bought the Mixed Up vinyl release on Record Store Day, along with the new Torn Down album of remixes. I had high hopes that Torn Down would be as good as Mixed Up was. It wasn't. I still listen to their older stuff a lot, and I still have hopes that Robert Smith and the gang have another strong album or two in their future. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Agreed. I'm disappointed in everything beyond Bloodflowers, which I don't really enjoy all that much but has some merit. After that, I haven't really bothered. However, as another poster noted, the last time I saw them live, they were fantastic. I saw them at Red Rocks (wonderful venue btw) about 9years ago(?) and they played solid three hour set.

Obviously like most 80s bands they're somewhat rooted to that decade for me, in other words, they mean a lot. I still regularly listen to Faith, Pornography and Head on the Door. I thought they were done once alternative rock broke out in the 90s but they surprised me with 'Burn' on The Crow, easily one of the best goth songs of all time. Of all time.

Longtime Cure fan, who would put them in my top 4 (Prince, Bowie, Beatles, Cure)

I didn't mind "Wild Mood Swings, sure it was one of the all-time best album bands delivering a patchy album, but it still had some good tracks.

I am going to say the Bloodflowers let me down. It broke my heart when Smith referred to Pornography, Disintegration, and Bloodflowers as his trilogy. For me his definitive trilogy will always be 17 seconds, faith and pornography.

The last few cure albums have sounded like the the b sides of b sides, perhaps d sides would be apt. The sound and themes have been homogonous, and has lacked creativity. It has got to a point where I would not care if Robert Smith never released another piece of music, and considering how much I appreciated his earlier work that is saying something. I get that he is great (and extremely generous and thoughtful in song selection) as a live performer, but even when Prince was at his nadir, I still had faith he could deliver something. Robert Smith appears to be out of bullets with his goth gun (his version of P Funks Bop Gun? I don't know).

I used to listen to The Cure alot when I was a teenager.

Their 80's-Albums (especially "Kiss Me, Kiss, Me, Kiss Me" & "Disintegration") are just adorable to me.

I never got into their newer albums...

But they are still a great live act IMO:

when I saw them 2 years ago and they played a very powerful show.

And Robert Smith is a true original.

yeah...i wouldn't go as far as to say i was heartbroken, but certainly confounded. i thought bloodflowers was so bad there was no way anybody would hold it in such high regard; but for fat bob himself to put it on par with those 2 ridiculously great cure albums really confused me...still, that trilogy dvd set IS pretty awesome and a nice treat for the fans. that is one thing i've always enjoyed about the cure; they've always loved, respected and provided for their fans.

One of the most incredible artists ever, IMO. They have so many great albums, and I've loved their live shows I have seen. Even their weakest album, Wild Mood Swings, is decent enough. A permanent member of my top 5 artists list.

What is this anti-Bloodflowers heresy? lol It's indeed worthy of canonization. Among their top 3, IMO.
