51 years later - new unreleased John Coltrane

An original and "deluxe" edition were just released called "Both Directions At Once"

I think this could be a model for how to deal with future releases, rather than release entire rehearsals, find completed alternate versions of each songs and then package them together into deluxe editions

I know this is what will happen with Prince's massive catalog... new music coming out 50 years from now! I just fear I won't live long enough to hear it all!

Great news, thanks! The first Coltrane album I bought was New Thing at Newport - with Archie Shepp, who I saw at Jazz fest this April at age 81. Still amazing, what a voice. Too bad we didn't have Trane that long.

Yeah, doesn't make much sense to me either. I'm gonna go a step further. I question the authenticity of these unreleazed tracks.

That means you're going to have to prove
that they're not authentic. Good luck with that.

Sometimes they find stuff in storage they didn't know they had/kept. That's how Hank Ballard got the rights to the Twist back after 30 years. A good samaratin found a reel to reel in storage that the powers thought was destroyed and sent it to him.

Everything is not always perfectly archived. I'm pretty sure there are still musicans around that could verify Coltrane's playing too.

Yeah, that's also how Bob Marley's Iron Lion Zion came out years after his death.

True, I hope they are legit

John Coltrane is pretty hard to fake, if that's what is meant here. They could probably figure out an imposter with a voice recognition type of program, where breaths are taken, repetitive instrument patterns. As I said upthread, just saw Archie Shepp in April. Damn straight he is plenty sharp enough to know what is Trane and what isn't.

People who weren't here before computers may not understand that lots of this kind of stuff was logged in on a paper list with, yes, a writing instrument such as a pencil or pen. By various engineers. Log sheets can get wet, lost, thrown away on purpose etc while the material is still there somewhere.
