Lipps, Inc., by far. In fact, they were Minneapolis based, and the song was about going to Los Angeles.

Interesting history w/ them.

Cynthia Johnson wrote with Flyte Tyme, sang background for Jevetta, Maceo, Elisa, Pia Zadora, and even on Brownmark's album. To name a few. When Johnson left the band, Margie Cox replaced her.

David Rivkin, aka David Z aka Bobby Z's brother, was the guitarist. Of course, he went on to work extensively with Prince over the years.

The Pseudo Echo version is terrible. It's overblown and unfunky, ruins the entire purpose of the song and the vibe the original so perfectly created.
