It probably is Japanese influenced! Motown artists toured the whole world and were exposed to awesome music from everywhere.

Heartbreaking stuff. And the whole album is one of my faves. I also love Jeff Beck's rendition of it.

Beck kills it. Prince was obviously influenced by him but didn't admit it.
