Interesting mention of Janelle in this article about funkateer Betty Davis in the New Yorker, contrasting the way they have each incorporated sexuality into their image:

Monáe has recently come out as pansexual, and she declared that, with “Dirty Computer,” she is stripping away her android armor to reveal her true self. While that framing severely undercuts the adventurous music she has been creating for more than a decade, she clearly takes her role as a pioneer seriously, even literally. In the gorgeous video for her new song “PYNK,” black women drive a pink Cadillac hovercraft into the masculine, ruggedly individual desert space of the West, feminizing, collectivizing, and moisturizing it by seducing each other. Still, Monáe’s new image as a “free-ass motherfucker” feels no less calculated than her robotic avatar. If Davis’s commitment to her own vision seemed to render her audience’s reactions beside the point, Monáe keeps her eyes trained on the camera. While daring us to be shocked by her skin-baring outfits, raised middle fingers, and multiple F-bombs, she seldom appears to be having much fun.

My thing with her is that she doesnt have the strongest vocal chops to hold up to many of her former mass array of musical stylings..the songwriting didnt pull me in. However this last album fixed that all right up for me.

Album plays and love for vinyl records.

The album debuted at n°6 on the billboard charts and n°1 on the R&B charts.

She was at the Met Gala yesterday givin'me 80's vibes with this outfit. The theme was "Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination". I see the halo with the hat biggrin being also a nod the the album cover.

Quincy Jones has tweeted to her:

Honored to have been referenced in ur liner notes for , ! U are an absolutely lovely individual & I'm so proud of you. I always think back to the OG hang-thang at the Miles Davis Music Hall Fest! Keep on keepin' on GURL! Just the beginning

I remember it was Prince that took him there.

Thankfully, Prince's style was refreshing and pioneering. He never borrowed ideas. wink

Yeah exactly. There's no reason to get mad at her if something reminds us of him.they were also close in real life and he passed away in the middle of her recording this album.

Tru dat I relistened to Electric Lady (still like DC more) and it was not until she hit the slower numbers where she started to show her chops but it is infrequent as a whole I mean, she doesnt show it a lot.

Uhm I don't know I think she's always very versatile in her records and so also with her voice. I like Dirty Computer more than Electric lady too.

Amusing misheard lyric from Take A Byte:

"So dress me up; I'll like it better if we both pretend / Yeah, make love to a nun."

I thought, "That's pretty kinky role-play....." eek

Turns out it's "make love 'til we're numb." doh! lol
