I'm excited about this era, she's definitely doing something different from her previous 2 records and I'm here for this. I love the tracks released but I want to hear and watch the entire album before talking too much about it. If it's anything like her previous work I will analize elements for months lol

biggrin I am very excited as well and I love the new direction she is going visually and musically. She is also as gorgeous as ever. I wonder what this video will look like. I think this song is super catchy and will do fine on the radio if released as a single. I really want Janelle to shine this era she is a great talent and deserves it.

Her team messed up a little bit with make me feel. It entered the charts, it reached number 37 on pop, a first time crossover from urban for her and she didn't promote the song at all. It could have become a big hit. I don't get it.
I'm curious about all the videos she has in store. She's a queen of visuals. This last single is the one that sounds more like a typical Janelle's song.

She's doing some interviews for radios the last couple of days. In an another interview she spoke about doing something with TV for the Dirty Computer première of the visual component but without saying much more. I'm still a little bit confused.

Honestly Cindy? I don't get it either. I think overall she needs better management and more promotion. If it jumped to 37 without promotion just imagine what it could have landed on with proper promotion? I don't want her to get on a more commercial label and be forced to sacrifice her artistic intergrity. She is pure artistic and stage talent and I think its a crying shame she is not more popular. While she has came a long ways it just feels that the industry and labels just want certain people to stay at the top regardless of their content and redundant gimmicks. I am tired of it. I want more deserving talent to shine. Her team should have went more out in promoting that single. Everyone was talking about it on social media when she released it.

It's a double edge sword with her because she never received the push Carbi B got from Atlantic records for example, for various reasons. With Cardi, Atlantic carefully plotted to put a new girl against Nikki Minaj, because she's not really loved at this point in the industry, they really did that and they were also exposed somewhere for this. Someone even says they want non blacks- latinos-whites to be the faces of black music (think about Bruno Mars, Justin, Adele, now Cardi) and they're not giving black girls in the pop world who aren't named Beyonce and Rihanna their time to really shine. I'm sure in Janelle's case it's partly because she's not directly signed to a major label; she really doesn't like when people tell her what to do but it's not like she's indie either, Atlantic records reps are always with her when she's doing these interviews for radios the last couple of days but they're not really there when imo they should. Hey maybe she doesn't care much and I care about this more than Janelle herself, and I'm sure her artistic values are way more important absolutely but I feel you on this point. It's frustrating to see talent like this not being rewarded as it should, especially when we're exposed to mediocre stuff all the time. You're right about the social media interest as well. There was a lot of social media buzz when she released her videoclips. She was trending worldwide both times, with the make me feel and dj videos's and with pynk last week, even though with Pynk everybody was being obsessed by these damn vagina pants. I say damn because I couldn't take anymore articles about these pants, they took way too much focus. lol

Cardi B is an industry plant. She was specifically pushed to replace Nikki Minaj. They look and sound exactly alike.

As far as the label backing issue, I am sure Janelle is grateful either way. She has came along ways and like you said, she is not an indie artist but she is also not a pop star imo. For me, its frustrating because IMO the current pop music industry is dead and there is nothing exciting anymore, nothing. I am tired of seeing the same overrated and mediocre pop stars doing the same mediocre things while other more talented artists and entertainers get nothing.

Janelle needs more than just labeling backing. She needs the industry to also promote her and I don't think they will given the current dynamics of the industry. The industry IMO appears to be more political and filled with agendas. Janelle is not willing to give up her art in order to play the industry game and I have tremendous respect for her and her rise to fame is inspirational.

Thank you. Many people bring this issue up but this is not the root of the problem as I see it. This is an issue but this is not the main issue. The industry is driven by politics and agendas and not real music. Also, tokenism is a big issue in terms of Black pop stars stardom that is never mentioned. IMO, it seems the industry currently only wants Beyonce to be the most successful African American act. They will praise her for ANYTHING regardless of how mediocre or redundant that it is. The media and industry will praise her for anything at this point. Now the media is saying Beyonce is better than Michael Jackson and Prince. Wendy was rightfully dragged for saying that bullshit. This has to be the biggest bunch of crap I have ever heard.

Beyonce is overoveroveroveroveroveroveroveroveroveroveroverrated and I sick and tired of her. Rihanna is more commercially successful but doesn't get the same praise or awards. This lets me know that tokenism is here and at play. This is hurting Black potential pop stars (i.e. Janelle Monae) and other Black talent that gets overlooked or no recognition at all.

The second biggest issue is that the industry has certain agendas and they want certain people to be at the top and not others. For example, Bruno Mars has rightfully earned his status IMO. I find it interesting that after Bruno won those Grammy's, many people and the media bashed for him being a appropiator BUT the media didn't have shit to say about JT who has made an entire career off of imitating Black singers and R&B. The media even went as far as to compare JT to Sammy Davis Jr and Stevie Wonder (Black folks didn't have shit to say about that crap). The industry is manipulative and full of agendas as far as I see it. If your not willing to play the game or not apart of the clique they don't want to promote you and social media is the death of music and Hollywood. Everything is magnified on social media even when its not even a big deal in the real world. Just throw the whole industry away, all of it is garbage. The industry needs a Renaissance and reboot.

I feel ya, truth is Beyonce can't compete with dead folks but dead folks can't sell tickets or make appearances unless they're 2Pac. After she goes to another plane history will work itself out. Of course she's the new Prince and MJ because the companies need that revenue. They let her do big things because they sell/get a reaction, I'll give her that.

No she is not....not even close. eek

And I am not the only one who thinks that because all on social media and on youtube Beyonce was dragged in that comparision. Its not even about opinions really, it all boils down to receipts and facts and Beyonce doesn't have their receipts to be called the new Prince or MJ, especially Michael. I mean that is just crazy and I am glad people are not falling for this propaganda/agenda the industry is trying to push with Beyonce.

Prince and MJ were blessed with God given talent and didn't need a "production"in the background to put on a performance neither did James Brown, Sammy Davis, Tina, etc and the rest of the greats.

Her silly performance was only talked about on social media. Nobody talked about that performance the next day in real life. Nobody is talking about it now. After Motown 25, everybody was talking about it for months. More than 30 years later everyone is still talking about Motown 25 and it still continues to play on television till this day and influence. People still talk about how amazing Prince Super Bowl performance was and how it is best. Nobody is not going to talk about that silly Beyonce performance next week. Nobody is not going to talk about it a year from now or even 10 or 20 years from now. Beyonce is grossly overrated and I am tired of it and especially now since they are trying to say she is better than MJ or Prince, oh hell no. I am so glad people rightfully dragged Wendy Williams for that bullshit. It was so disrespectful.

I'd like to see the "movie" that's supposed to come with the new album... But, frankly, I prefer her Archandroid album to this one. I wanted to see her branch out from that source of inspiration to see where it would take her...

Agree, I think this is her best and most creative album by far. I think Janelle is going more so the pop route with this album.

I absolutely adore the archandroid but this album is not a part of the metropolis, archandroid and electric lady saga. It's another concept so I'm not mad about it because I'm interested to see her doing something different. She said recently it's not the end of Cindi Mayeather because that saga is not finished yet and some day she will come back.

I put Bruno in the same categories as them, he benefits from being a non black dude who sings black music exactly like Cardi B. Timberlake on the other hand is the worst because he also disrespects legends and black artists all the time while benefiting from their work something that Bruno doesn't do. The consolation is success is not long term these days for the majority and if you don't have real talent you will go away anyway in some years. In the end artists who are less popular but talented will be recognized for longevity, I hope so at least. I'm sure Janelle prefers a career like that.

About Beyonce she's a great live performer but I think her material is nowhere close to Michael and Prince. She doesn't have a thriller, beat it, billie jean etc and I grew up with her basically all my life because I was a teenager when she was with Destiny's Child so I should feel more connected to her than Michael but yeah I don't see it.

There is not one track name on that rumored tracklist that is not a double entendre (to me). The gag is the mystery of how they're gonna sound and address the interpretations in each song. I'm all for some androgyny or full on Sappho.

.

Dirty Computer (Theme of album is it watching you or are you watching it)

Crazy, Classic, Life (Broad enough of a title)

Take a Byte (computer byte or bite of my...)

P*ssy Poppin (this could be a song about cats blowing bubbles... or not)

Screwed (are we or have we?)

Django Jane ('nuff said peep the lyrics)

Pynk (yeah definitely a double entendre and peep the lyrics/videos)

Make Me Feel (Pynk makes you feel that...)

I Got the Juice (girl thats nasty u crazy but...)

I Like That (so)

Don't Judge Me

Stevie's Dream (Stevie Wonder? Stevie Nicks?)

So Afraid (of)

Americans

if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2

Yes!! and she said all the songs on the album are connected to each other in some way because it's a concept and it's her most personal and vulnerable album to date.

Well I disagree with that. Unorthodox Juke Box is not an R&B album. Its a pure Pop album. Bruno did not become a star singing "Black music". Locked Out of Heaven is a inspired Police sounding song, its not R&B. On the other hand, 24k is a R&B influenced POP album but he did not become a super star singing R&B or Black music.

Cardi B is an industry plant. Her trajectory into super stardom has more so to do with politics versus the argument you are making. Cardi B was pushed to replace Nikki because of Nikki's attitude and antics behind the scenes.

Chance the Raper is another plant but he is African American and makes Black music but he sucks.

Same with SZA another African American who was nominated for 5 Grammys this year but the woman cannot sing and her music is not good.

Bruno Mars is popular because he writes good catchy pop songs and doesn't rely on gimmicks, the same with Adele. It has nothing to do with them being Non- Black.

What people need to be asking is why do the Black pop stars make mediocre music instead of displacing their anger at other pop stars who make quality music. In the case of Janelle, I think they won't back her because she doesn't oversexualize her image and she is not willing to play the game.

Thank you for posting.

I love listening to her talk about her life and childhood. It sounds like it was rough for her and her mother. She really has came a long way. I think that is why she is so grounded and humble.

Life wasn't easy when she was a kid/teenager. Her father was a drug addict and was in and out of prison most of the time.

WOW, I had no idea she suffered so much. I know that had to be a lot to endure. She talks more about her mother than her father (maybe that is why since she was mostly there to raise her)
