Mariah Carey: ''My Battle with Bipolar Disorder''

uadp2zd.jpg?1

04/11

In this week’s People cover story, Mariah Carey reveals for the first time her battle with bipolar disorder.

Although she was first diagnosed in 2001 (when she was hospitalized for a physical and mental breakdown), “I didn’t want to believe it,” the superstar singer-songwriter confesses.

Carey says she finally sought treatment recently after “the hardest couple of years I’ve been through” — years of professional upheaval, an E! reality show and romantic drama.

“Until recently I lived in denial and isolation and in constant fear someone would expose me,” she says. “It was too heavy a burden to carry and I simply couldn’t do that anymore. I sought and received treatment, I put positive people around me and I got back to doing what I love — writing songs and making music.”

That explains a lot. Kudos to her for overcoming her fear and seeking treatment. She shouldn't have to suffer in silence just because of the stigma still prevalent in this society.

OMG, now I totally understand it. Wow! Having lived with a person with that, family members....I TOTALLY get it and understand that now. She should have came out with it a while back. Make sense.

Why is everyone saying "that makes sense" and seem to be confirming here diagnoses? There was nothing about MC that made me thing that she has a mental illness. According to most psychologist 98% of the population (yes, including YOU) are suffering from some kind of mental health issue.

Do you realize how deceptive bipolar disease is? How people who suffer manic depression can go through extreme measures to hide their disease?

I'm happy she's sharing her story. I admit I don't know much about the disorder but I'm kinda of surprised because I never heard the same kind of stories about Mimi that I heard about Phyllis Hyman or never saw or heard any kind of behavior exhibited by her like a Bobby Brown or DMX. But, I guess bipolar is not the same for everyone who is affected by it.

Apparently Mariah has a not-so-extreme form of the disorder. I wasn't aware of this until I read the article but I actually did know a person who told me he had bipolar disorder, didn't take medications, and did not seem to have the extremities in behavior exhibited by people I had known with worst form of it.

There are some big Mariah fans on this thread, and although this diagnosis was not previously shared, we all heard about a "breakdown" during the release week of Glitter. It may also shed some light on the emotional content of her more personal writing (she writes all her lyrics).

I have compassion for her struggles with mood issues. However, it has always been her narcissism that has put me off.

Maybe it´s a coincidence, or maybe bipolar disorder and narcissism go hand in hand but most people I know who are bipolar are also very narcissistic.

Was this around the time when she had a brief affair with Eminem?

I read that he played some of her voice messages in public (during a concert?) and I found that pretty fucked up of Em, especially when you consider that he has had bouts with depression himself, so he should know better.

Not a fan of Mariah but I´d love to sit down and have a couple of drinks with her. lol

It was apparent during some of her interviews at the time that something was not quite right with Mariah during the time of Glitter. One interview I remember in particular was with Carson Daly on his then talk show. Mariah had some odd behavior on the show and I wondered at the time if she was having mental health issues.

Interesting observation. Some Bipolar people are self-absorbed because they feels so unstable that they have to spend their energy on themselves just to deal with life rather than others. The symptom of grandiosity during the manic phase of Bipolar is to feel so on top of the world that it may come across as narccisitic but this is usually just a temporary state. What I was referring to about Mariah was something at least in public that was more consistently diva-like, entitled, and conceited. That may have been a facade but it sure was on offputting one to me.

To the surprise of no one, Mariah's ex-manager (whom she terminated) is looking for a free payday at her expense.

Stella should have saved her coins while she was with Mariah. She must have thought that opportunity would last forever.
