Maybe a single but she was still in Lisbon just a couple of weeks ago recording. I wouldn't look for an album release until May or June at earliest. But still interested to hear what she's come up with. Rebel Heart can suck a dick.

Ya never know with her! Idk some article said she was working with a pop writer that has songs for a slew of dud trendy teenybopper so lol who knows? I've been waiting for her to just make a band album with like a handful of musicians vs. a pop star of the moment thang but I doubt it'd ever happens. I can say for a fact that brother in law and "Guilty By Association"/"Don't Tell Me" collaborator Joe Henry commented on a social media post that he "would be ready when The Queen was ready" I could use a good new pop song.

No truer words. Rebel Heart really was her jumping on whatever bandwagon of popular DJ was hot at the moment. I mean - Madonna and Avicci, or Diplo? SERIOUSLY? When more people's listed credits are "programming" more than "guitar" or "bass" or "keyboards" or "percussion", something is fucking wrong.

What's funny is that she tried to shade Ms. Germanotta by calling her music (and somewhat rightly so) "reductive", when Rebel Heart turned just into that. It was boiled down gigabytes with some of it sounding like it was produced on an Atari 800. MDNA was slightly better with things like "I'm A Sinner", "Turn Up The Radio", "Masterpiece" saving it.

I guess I'm just tired of her electronica/EDM-wannabe phase. Ray of Light and Music was cute n' all, but fuck - move on. I'm surprised she hasn't done an album of Romanian gypsy music. That would be more welcome.

Let me clarify:

Sucking dick: good

Rebel Heart: bad

Rebel Heart was a step up from MDNA being one of her most personally revealing records since Hard Candy. It was oversaturated with trendy sounds though and mind numbing bad tracks like Illuminati, Bitch I'm Madonna, Sex and Iconic. At the same time Living For Love, Body Shop, Heartbreak City, Holy Water and Unapologetic Bitch were great tracks!

"Unapologetic Btich" is one of those trendy tracks that aged badly almost immediately.

I see/hear great differences between MDNA and Rebel Heart. I don't know how one was a setup for the other. But to each his own. You are correct in saying "oversaturated with trendy sounds". I did not bother to get invested with the lyrics because I could not get past the production.

By the way, Hard Candy is one of her worst records to me. While Pharrell's production has its moments of clarity and appeal, his work with Madonna was less than stellar. Most of my Madge-pals agree that Hard Candy is at the bottom of the list with American Life and Rebel Heart.

To many that album was bad, I never understood that. However in my opinion, it had some of the most instantly catchy writing I have heard from her in a while. I liked the lyrics of Unapologetic Bitch and Heartbreak City especially having told the story about her breakup with that 25 year old (what was you thinking gurl!?), and Joan Of Arc was revealing. She did the same thing in Hard Candy with Miles Away (Guy Richie only wants her when she's gone), Shes Not Me (Guy Richie moving on) and Devil Wouldnt Recognize You (Guy Richie again). There's some storytellin' in that album.

Miles Away, Voices was kinda boring to me, however just about all the songs on there were full of melody and followed a strong songwriting pattern that was hard to deny, unlike many tracks on MDNA like Some Girls or Girls Gone Wild I Dont Give A F, Gimme All Your Lovin and Gang Bang. Its like they went in with sounds but left the songwriting and the hooks on the floor.

I agree with your assessment of the two albums. I liked most of Rebel Heart, as the melodies on some of the songs reminded me of the pre-electonica Madonna. In contrast, MDNA was her worst album and seemed like a failed attempt to get relevant on top 40 radio again.

I think Rebel Heart was mostly a good record, cut a few tracks and it’s pretty solid, definitely a stronger record than MDNA. I hope Madonna goes for a more mature sound next like the Music and Ray of Light albums.

I agree about Hard Candy's lyrics. There is a lot of heartbreak in them. The production is what puts me off. It seemed dry and uninspired.

Yeah, and I love a trilogy in an artist's history l like that, too. The three Revolution albums are a great journey in Prince-dom, as an example. I think RN1814, janet., and The Velvet Rope sort of hold up as a trio as well.

I guess, for me, Madonna's delving into electronic, EDM and anything else branched off from that became derivative after Ray of Light (which, in itself, was fucking brilliant) instead of "OMG never heard that from her before". You can throw together songs from American Life, Music, Rebel Heart, and Hard Candy and maybe make one really good 15 track album.

While I don't want any artist to go back 30 years and repeat themselves, there is something missing in Madonna's music - like fun, a good hook, a memorable chorus, an anthem. What there is too much of is trendy DJs with a high-end Macbook and a torrented copy of ProTools. Madonna is doing now what Prince did a bit in the 90s - following trends instead of creating them. I love ol' girl, she's my original diva, but she's taking herself waaayyyy too seriously in the past decade and a half.

I cant argue with that that's why I said American Life was the last inspired Madonna record (maybe Confessions too on a good day). I dont care for anything she did after that

Although I dont agree with you on; Rebel Heart and Hard Candy, they are not even in the same league with Music and American Life. IMO you can pick the best singles from the former and they fail in comparison to album tracks on the latter like "Gone", "Paradise", "Nothing Fails" "Easy Ride". Those are up there with her all time best songs. IMO biggrin

I have to say, Confessions On A Dance Floor was refreshing. Nothing too heavy lyrically, everything was upbeat. It was old school Madonna, for me, in the new millennium. I remember her being on Ellen (her first time on there) and she said she just wanted to dance. "Hung Up" took a minute for me to like, though. I thought the Abba sample was sorta cheap. But in general songs like "Jump", "Isaac", "Sorry", "Future Lovers", "Forbidden Love" - just great tracks. COADF and MDNA share similar interests, whereas American Life and Hard Candy fail on similar levels. It's like an ebb and flow with her output post-Ray Of Light. But COADF brought back that old Madonna dancey vibe.

People seem to love American Life but I felt such a disconnect from her during that time. The tour was never fully released on video (although a full pro-shot Argentina show is out there), and I didn't care for much of anything on it.

An interesting note about it though: I think it was the same Michel Colombier that worked on the Purple Rain movie did the string arrangements on American Life.

I'm really excited about the thought of a new Madge album. It's definitely time. I've been listening to Rebel Heart a lot lately and think it held up quite well. It's certainly stronger than MDNA, imo.

I'ce enjoyed the last few albums, but then I'm a fan ... M needs to go back to being ahead of the curve and setting the trends, not following far behind in other people's wake. I have my doubts whether that'll happen though.

JANUARY 19, 2018 NEWS

Madonna is currently in London working on her new music and revealed on Instagram she is collaborating with Starrah and Billboard.

Starrah is an American songwriter, singer and rapper who co-wrote songs such as Rihanna’s “Needed Me,” Katy Perry’s “Swish Swish”, Nicki Minaj’s “No Frauds” and Camila Cabello’s “Havana”.

Montreal-based producer Billboard has worked with Ariana Grande, Britney Spears, Shakria, Dillon Francis, Kesha and Ellie Goulding.
Billboard also co-produced “Ghosttown” off Madonna’s Rebel Heart album. (source: Madonnarama)

Madonna has been making music since 1982.There's not gonna be anymore "setting trends" or breaking new ground biggrin Look around, there is nothing "new" or original in pop music anymore.I can't think of a single producer that she could work with, who could give her a completely new and groundbreaking sound, can you?

Madonna is working on a new album. One of the collaborators is Starrah.

Madonna posted a photo of her and Starrah last night on Instagram. The two are working on new music in Sarm West Studios in London.
Starrah is a songwriter/producer whose credits include “Swish Swish” by Katy Perry, “Fake Love” by Drake, “No Frauds” by Nicki Minaj, “Needed Me” by Rihanna.
She also contributed vocals on “True Colors” by The Weekend, “Dreamer” by Charli XCX etc.

I still listen to Rebel Heart a lot, including the abundance of unreleased demos and outtakes. There's a lot to discover in those songs. I liked MDNA immediately after it was released but the re-visited it after seeing the MDNA Tour and felt it was a poor album, maybe even more so than Hard Candy which I've recently been revisiting and enjoying... "Devil Wouldn't Recognise You" is a brilliant song imo.

I'm probably being naive but the recent instagram posts of her alone at the piano writing songs makes me hope that she has gone back to basics and is doing things "the old fashioned way" but I'm probably wrong.

Very interesting to hear Patrick Leonard is releasing an album of the music he wrote with Madonna. Now THAT would be a dream collaboration at this point. I wonder if he's reached out to her?

Yeah, maybe you're right ... but then there's never been anything "new" in pop as everything is derivative of something else.

Perhaps groundbreaking is not what I should have said ... I meant new for her. Her last three albums have all been very similar; hook up with the flavour of the moment "urban" dance producer and knock out an album. Its become ho-hum and I think everyone is expecting M to release yet another album in the same mould. With the caveat that I liked HC, MDNA and RH, its become predictable and, dare I say it, boring. The last thing I ever wanted M to become is boring.

My personal choice for her would be The XX / Jamie XX, but that's just because I love all three of their albums and their minimalistic production would suit M's voice perfectly. I'm thinking something akin to Ray of Light but a bit darker where she embraces getting older rather than clinging on to being "down with the kids".

I would love a collaboration with The XX or Kaytranada, I think both could really make ol girl shine.

.

Aside from the aformentioned rock/acoustic album that will never happen, another great idea that will never happen is the "around the world" music-themed album she has hinted at in the past where tracks with regional sounds/producers would be featured, including Portugal.
