Music that could have easily be produced by Prince

be specific, make it interesting...
there are songs, and I have 4 off the top of my head that could have easily come out of the 1982-1987 Prince camp... There are a lot of artists out there, so if you know of 1 that is a sure example share it.

1. Down To You (Joni Mitchell) Now I know this one probably actually inspired the Prince camps 1985-1986 Family/Parade sound. But this song could easily be on the Parade soundtrack.

2. Africa (DeAngelo) DeAngelo especially was inspired by the 80s Prince sound and Africa could have easily been a Parade album cut, It fits so well after or before New Position.

3. Get Involved (Raphael Saadiq) sort reminds me of a mix of Pop Life/Girls & Boys and a few others

4. Dance With Yesterday (Joi)-produced by Raphael Saadiq. Definately Prince 1981-1986 inspired with a touch of his latter (20Ten) sounds

Believer - Emily King.

Sleepwalker, from the same album, has a bit of a Prince-y vibe too.

Eric Gadd is a Swedish r'n'b'/soul singer who has long carried a torch for Prince.

Check out the horns, the guitars, the female moaning etc. in this track, "Kom hit och ta" (=Come and get it) from 1989. This is Gadd channelling Prince channelling James Brown.

Another Gadd song in the same vein from 1989, "Bara himlen ser på" (=Only heaven is watching). Compare this to "I Wish U Heaven". The lyrics, the falsetto, the horns, the female moaning, the Clare Fischer strings etc., it's all a tribute to Prince.

Years ago, orger Harlepolis sent me a playlist years ago that has Joi song and this song, I thought both sounded Prince-influenced to me

Don't know how to do the video link thing...sorry. I try and always mess it up when I do it!

They did it on purpose, of course.

I remember this circulating as a Prince outtake, many years ago. Very Prince like indeed - first song I thought of when I saw this thread.

it's actually one of the best that was not done by a prince-affiliated group, lots of people stole or mimicked prince, not to many got this close to his sounds, his synthriffs, his vocal mannerisms. Most of the time, people like Phill Collins would just take the riff from 1999 and play it but not try to imitate the rest of prince's sound.

I was forced to listen to Paula Abdul's "Promise of a New Day" while waiting in line at the bank the other day. It has a very purple sound to it with that kinda synth/flute line in the back and her vocal delivery, especially how she uses her lower and "higher" registers.

For me COLD by Annie Lennox is the single greatest Prince song from someone else's hands.

Everything on this track reeks of his style. The rhymes, poetry and the title its speaks so much of his 'longing' jams like Scandalous and such. I can never listen to this and not picture him creating it.

So sexy: freedom Music? too sexy! GOOD GAWD!

The Stevie Wonder tribute a few years back, Annie rendering of My Cherie Amour blew me away. She is one person I would love to hear do some Prince covers.

very true, i remember rolling stone criticizing prince for losing his edge and saying that a "flaccid talent" like george micheal was beating him on the charts using his own style with I want your sex. in those days, no one had respect for george. George rubbed me the wrong way when they said he dissed Prince, i thought it was stupid after you done ripped off the dude you wanna diss him.

not bad, here's my approximation of the minneapolis sound, i always thought it was one of my better tunes but no one else did. when i wrote it, i told my best friend that i wanted to make something that prince would be proud of if he ever heard it.
