Mariah Carey is "Restarting" With New Album

CuueuTK.jpg?1

03/2018

For Mariah Carey, it's always "music first" -- and as far as career strategy is concerned, she'd rather leave that to someone else.

She tells V magazine, "In the music business, if you care about the Grammys and submitting your stuff before a certain time frame, you want a single out in the summer, and then you want to have your record [out] before the Grammys [consideration] deadline, which has changed. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn." "

"I mean, I have five Grammys(!?). That's cute," she continues.

"There's people that have been doing this half the time that have twice as many [Grammys]. I won two Grammys the first year I started, but after that, [the Grammys] are like, 'We don't go with the people that are selling a lot of records and are popular; we're going the opposite way.'"

"So I got screwed out of certain years," she continues. "I wasn't bitter about it. I was just like, okay, well. I guess I'm not standing here barefoot onstage singing and trying to go a certain way. I'm just me."

The iconic superstar, who says she's "kind of restarting" with "a new album of regular music" she's working on now, says she's taking a "different approach" to her creative process.

"I think it's like a fresh start," she explains. "A lot of people see that whole other image. They see this diva; they see hair, makeup, bod, clothes, whatever it is -- and they're like, oh. They don't think songwriter," Mariah notes.

"But I look at myself as a songwriter first, and then a singer. That's what I love to do the most."

Well, I'm not getting too excited about this alleged "regular music". If it's the same mindless dribble everyone else is doing, then I'll pass. I want her to get back to recording music befitting of a singer her age with real musicians. Man, I would LOVE to hear her record some jazz standards! Listening to some of the cuts on her last Christmas album, I think a more mature, jazz-oriented sound is the way she should go.

She needs to cast off every rapper on the planet and quit chasing trends. I don't know whether she can because she's almost entirely youth-fixated.

It's Mariah Carey.

She still has potential for truly great new music inspite of everything that has happened the past 13 years.

My guesses would be Cardi B., Kendrick Lamar or Migos as her first choices for the rent-a-rapper slots on the album.

If the first single says "featuring" its over and she is beyond clueless at this point as to what people want from her.

Even when she leaves the rappers off, she doesn't really start with a chord progression, always some wack kicks and claps.

She sounded great on that Glitter Rick James track (RIP). Wonder what she could make writing songs and making bands play them.

Obviously we know she loves hip hop, and I do too, but can we put the MPC away for one project?

"All My Life" is outstanding.

When preparing for the soundtrack for her motion picture debut Glitter, Mariah Carey phoned Rick James and asked him to contribute a song to the project. James, who was responsible for introducing the world to top '80s female singers Teena Marie and the Mary Jane Girls, told Launch that Mariah contacted him with a particular sound in mind. "She wanted a Mary Jane Girls-type feeling," he said. "The movie takes place in the '80s, so of course, she didn't want that hip-hop thang. But she wanted something '80s with a '90s kind of flavor. I wrote a song called All Of My Life, and it turned out really well. So we're really excited about that."

Are you sure about that? Because here's the Top 10 for this week and 6 of the songs are collabos. There's even 3 on the adult R&B chart which is the format Mariah is more likely to get played on today.

Hot 100
1 Drake - God's Plan
2 Ed Sheeran - Perfect
3 Bruno Mars & Cardi B - Finesse
4 Post Malone feat. Ty Dolla $ign - Psycho
5 Bebe Rexha & Florida Georgia Line - Meant To Be
6 Camila Cabello feat. Young Thug - Havana
7 BlocBoy JB feat. Drake - Look Alive
8 Zedd, Maren Morris & Grey - The Middle
9 The Weeknd & Kendrick Lamar - Pray For Me
10 Migos - Stir Fry

Adult R&B
1 SZA feat. Travis Scott - Love Galore
2 Daniel Caesar feat. Kali Uchis - Get You
3 Charlie Wilson - Chills
4 Khalid - Location
5 Bruno Mars - That's What I Like
6 Tank - When We
7 dvsn - Mood
8 Bruno Mars & Cardi B - Finesse
9 MAJOR. - Honest
10 En Vogue - Rockett

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

I know. Same goes for Chante Moore. Extremely disappointed she decided to follow that same path and chase trends instead of setting them.

Well her last hit didnt sit well with the charts. Mariah got rep for being crazy now and the stream queens now and days. She need to go back to pop or something different than the same thing for the last 10 years.

Canada (Canadian Hot 100)[16] 96
France (SNEP)[17] 102

The Hot 100 is pop, and it's mostly rap, so Mariah has a better chance in doing what she's been doing for 20 years now. lol Hip hop is pop music now and has been a long while now. When Michael Bolton sings a hook on a rap tune, Diane Warren works with Common, and Kenny G & Richard Marx have a rap battle, then that's as pop as you can get. razz Anyway, didn't Mariah say those early records are what Tommy Motolla wanted her to do and that she had to fight the label to do the song with Ol' Dirty Bastard? They didn't want to release it. That AC sound is not really in now anyway as far as the pop chart is concerned, except maybe with Adele. Both Janet Jackson & TLC had adult R&B Top 10 hits with rappers (J. Cole, Snoop Dogg) on their most recent singles.

She has been doing that with her last couple of singles and got nowhere. Like I showed, I Dont just released last year only went to #35 / #89 on the charts even though it was a good song imo. Her last top ten single was "Beautiful" with Miguel which was the closest to pop. #10 on the charts. This is why she should keep that up. "Eternal (Dance Remix)" also went #1 on the charts for her. the hip hop thing is just not in her favor right now

Mariah is over a certain age, so she's unlikely to get Top 40 airplay, no matter what she does. When was the last time Madonna had a big hit? She still releases records too. Older rappers like Snoop Dogg and Big Boi from OutKast don't get hit records and they came out around the same time as mariah. Snoop has a new album with gospel singers and Sting & Shaggy have a new collabo album. They're not getting pop airplay either, and they were popular in the past. Their hit making days are mostly over. Young people today don't want to listen to their parents or grandparents music. Maybe if Mariah gets on a DJ Khaled song, she'll have a chance on getting a pop hit. Like Paul McCartney got on a song with Rihanna & Kanye West. Mariah would have to be the guest singer rather than someone else guesting on her song.

That's kind of how Charlie Wilson resurrected his career. He sang hooks on rap songs, and collaborated with younger acts like Pharrell, Justin Timberlake, and will.i.am. This made him known to younger audiences as Uncle Charlie. Charlie was also booked on TV shows like Jimmy Fallon & Jimmy Kimmel where they can be seen by a newer, younger audience. Although Charlie doesn't get pop airplay, he has been a mainstay on Adult R&B for years and has been nominated for Grammys. The New Edition miniseries on BET made them known to a new audience and people have uploaded videos of their children singing or dancing to Candy Girl & Can You Stand The Rain. The views of NE's videos on Youtube increased a whole lot after the biopic aired.

Pretty much anything with DJ Khaled becomes a huge hit, so Mariah has a chance doing that if she wants a big pop hit, rather than minor hits. Otherwise she mostly has a chance of Adult R&B hits, and it plays old school hip hop songs. So rap is everywhere. So it doesn't really make much of a difference if Mariah goes back to early sound. The stations she would get played on to get a new hit single, either pop, regular R&B (.ig Chris Brown, Rihanna, Migos), or adult R&B. The playlist has hip hop on it. The local oldies station that plays hits from the 1970s to the 1990s, you'll hear Captain & Tennille, Guns n Roses, and Tone Loc on the same station.
