Black Messiah is one of the most satisying funk/soul albums I've heard of the past decade. "Ain't That Easy" is my cut!

I like to listen to Black Messiah at work cuz no one can understand any of the lyrics. If I was in a car I'd bump Brown Sugar over Black Messiah anyday.

lol lol lol

I love all his albums....but seriously, what was he thinking while recording Black Messiah? I mean, it is such a drastic difference compared to his other albums.

And his lyrics, or rather vocals, were crystal clear and easy to understand during both shows I went to...so why does it sound like he´s mumbling on Black Messiah?

I've had several looks lol all good it's a great, funky listen I just know that as a fan if I can barely get some of it at home with some volume, the folks over in accounting sure won't on low. I really enjoyed the version of Black Hole Sun that leaked way back, I almost wonder if that were on the album if it would have had more reach as it has a similar kinda delivery vocally.

I think Ive heard that leaked Black Hole Sun it seemed faster than the one out there now. One thing missing from Black Messiah is a cover song. I was surprised and disappointed he did do a studio version cover of The SOS Bands " Tell Me If You Still Care" or/and Ohio Players " Our Love Has Died"

You think so ?

I think he´s got his worst phase long behind him (the hard drugs, the car crash, the obesity phase etc.) and he proved time and time again that he can bounce back and get in perfect mental and physical shape again. There are so many musicians who have done far worse than him and are still alive or have lived a long live despite their lifestyle choices (Steven Tyler, Keith Richards, James Brown, Lemmy Kilminster, Rick James and many more).

And Bob Marley probably smoked way more weed in his lifetime than D´Angelo could ever smoke in the next 50 years. lol

I´ve seen D´Angelo twice and both shows were absolutely phenomenal.

(2002 and 2015).

I'm probably one of his bigeest backers.

I hope that he is on the right track these days.

I wonder though.....his followup to the last cd, "the 2nd Coming" hasn't seen the light of day, and now supposely he is working on new material. I was under the impression that he had recored at least 10 albums worth of material already before the last had dropped.

If so, where is that material?

Yes, that´s a bit strange. I remember Questlove posting about tons of outtake material that they recorded that they had recorded that did not end up on Black Messiah and that was supposedly meant to be released "real soon" after Black Messiah, like an EP or extended album or whatever.

Maybe D is too much of a perfectionist ?

I have no idea.

So...was 2nd Coming the tentative title of that album? I vaguely remember Alan Leeds mentioning that title , too.

Perfectionism combined with heavy use of Mary Jane is a combination that can really put the brakes on the output of a talented artist. Just look at Kate Bush, she's managed to put out a tour and new material a couple of years back but that same thing led to many, many years of waiting for a new album or even just a public appearance.

When you mentioned Kate Bush were you referring to her because of her perfectionism or because she smokes weed? Because while I know that she´s considered a perfectionist I have never heard or read about her smoking weed. Then again, I am not a big fan. I like her music and own maybe two thirds of all her albums but I have never really studied her career.

-

I know that D´Angelo smokes it and is a perfectionist, and I know that Erykah Badu smokes a lot...and both need forever to release new material. But maybe Erykah Badu has different priorities these days, raising children and all. I remember that she once admitted that her cannabis use was getting a bit too heavy and made her lose her ambition.

.

I know people , celebrities and normal folks, who smoke tons of weed and are very productive and hardworking, and then there are people who become lethargic and lose their ambition.

I still don´t know the real truth behind it I guess it depends on the individual person and the way you make a living, and the strain of weed that you prefer. Some indica strains give you a couch lock high and some sativas can give you a boost, but also make you paranoid.

Thanks!

I've heard this somewhere but was unaware that it was D' on vocals. Back in the day I purchased Laryn Hill's album , Roy Hargroves albums as well as any soundtracks like Scream 2. High School High,Get On the Bus just for the D'angelo featured tracks.

Again I say D' PLEASE RELEASE A DOUBLE ALBUM OF NEW MATERIAL

Yep! Discogs.com was the site that helped me find that gem. That Mark Ronson album is great, "Somebody To Love Me" is my other fave song next to "Glass Mountain Trust".

I've heard of others having a similar problem where they can't understand what he's saying. Which is kind of strange because I understand him perfectly.
