I wonder if this is happening because we've lost so many talented artists in recent years and perhaps the younger artists are not so musically-talented, like say, Prince or Tom Petty? The music industry has changed so much in recent years and a lot of artists are using technology to their advantage, which means they don't have to use as many instruments. Am I making sense? eek

That's valid. Perhaps GarageBand is driving the guitar to extinction?

Guitarists have been moving away from Gibson products lately. There's been a lot of complaining about the quality of the products on the Internet and famous guitarists have complained in interviews how hard it has been to communicate with the company on the models they were sponsoring. Apparently, it's not just been due to "times changing", but the people occupying the top positions the company have been just full of themselves.

Maybe Slash or Jimmy Page can help them out. They’re the most famous Gibson guitar players, right?

Nah, I doubt the explosion of audio sofware has driven the guitar to extinction and I doubt recent
deaths of famous guitar players and a sudden drop off in the distribution of musical talent is respon-
sible for Gibson's financial issues. People still want to play guitar, I would imagine, and Mother Na-
ture doesn't really care about what instrument is en vogue: she just dishes out talent like she always
has.

Gibson guitars are fucking expensive yet they only recently started selling budget axes in some sort
of consistent effort. And, there are now a gazillion guitar companies making instruments that are
affordable. So, Gibson is probably gonna fold for the same reasons that Sears is: the competition took
116 years to catch up and during that century march the marketplace evolved and apparently Gibson
didn't evolve judiciously alongside it.

It's also easier to buy a nice guitar 2nd hand these days when everything gets listed on the Internet. The amount of vintage electric guitars in good condition appearing on the lists is only going to increase with time. They're not really comparable to electronic keyboards that tend to die with the chips dying inside them after a decade or two. A guitar can pretty much always be fixed.
