Janelle is a goddess, I LOVE her! I love Make Me Feel Good and can't wait for the new album!

What do you think of Django Jane? I love when she raps like that. biggrin

The video is beautiful and she looks beautiful in it! She reminds me of darker skin version Dorothy Dandridge, truly stunning. I think she is a great rapper, we saw that on Q.U.E.E.N. I like that she always talks about her personal life, Black women, family struggles and overcoming, her mother and how far she has came. That "Vagina" word play was crazy (in a good way of course and she is a great songwriter). Out of the two songs though I like the Make Me Feel one better and I hope her sound leans more toward that direction.

I don't think she will stop being herself any time soon. She's constanly evolving like a Pokemon since her indie the Audition days. She really is a gem!! one of the most beautiful, talented and smart ladies in music (now even in movies biggrin). She should be celebrated more than Beyonce and Rihanna because she has it all. Archandroid is a classic and it hasn't aged a day. I think on Dirty Computer we will hear some more explicit sexual stuff compared to her Cindi days but not in a bad way:D simply because I don't think she will have her android alter ego this time around. I was wondering how will she release the emotion picture/movie? On line? Theaters?

Im glad you came back so now we can get all the Janelle Monae info first hand lol I will def be checking in this thread. Yea I LOVE her style. I just want to have her wardrobe stylist lol Its so unique and quirky, I love it! Her make up artist is a beast as well! OMG the Audition! Look how far our girl has come! I remember when I first saw her performed Sincerely Jane on PBS, great performance and when she first toured with Bruno and BOB. Its amazing how far she has come in her career and she has still stayed true to herself! I am so proud of her and she is such an inspiration. She reminds me so much of myself. She is not afraid to be who she is and doesn't care what others think about that. She is way more gorgeous than Beyawnce and Rihanna and way more talented. She deserves to be more celebrated and she does have it all as well as intelligence and charisma. Its such a pity. IMO, I think its because she is not a sex kitten and does not sexually exploit herself because she is more talented than those other girls. Ive seen her live many times. She can put on a damn great show and she is a phenomenal artist and actress too. I will remain prayerful that she will get her respect and just due one of these days. I will keep on supporting her and defending her good name and talent.

I am not sure how she will release the movie but I am guessing it will be an online exclusive? Many people are speculating on this alleged relationship with Tessa. What are your thoughts on this? After an interview Tessa gave about the Make Me Feel video, I doubt she and Janelle are in a relationship and are just really good friends. They have known each other for a very long time. With that being said, I like that Janelle is playing around with these themes and raising these issues. There is no Black female artist from this era that has touched on homosexuality/bisexuality. Whether the relationship with Tessa is true or not, I would like to see Janelle explore these issues more and the many stigma/consequences associated with them in the Black community.

[Edited 3/18/18 10:56am]

Yes I'm back! ;D Yeah she has come a long way since the Audition, I'm so proud of her. She's not the girl in the mirror with hair like a rockstar that wants to dance but has cold feet, like she sang on the Audition demo.

I saw her live too. She's an hell of a performer and I'm curious to see what she will do in her live shows for this album. Rihanna and Beyonce have big machines behind them and always had. Janelle has a distribution deal with Diddy which I hope will expire soon by the way biggrin because I can't stand him but she still has full control on her material. It's really cool and badass that she has her own label.

About the gossip of her and Tessa, I'm pretty sure Janelle is still in a relationship with Nate Wonder (the guy with the dreads from her team, the one who was at the Oscar with her last year) but I don't know about her and Tessa because someone was often suggesting her and Nate could be in an open relationship, long before Tessa was in the picture. Someone that apparently know her personally said Janelle has always been a touchy kind of person and a big FLIRT with her friends and that creates confusion biggrin The confusion is also there because Janelle doesn't claim her partners in public so no one really knows when they are really just her friends or there's more going on. She really likes her private life to be private. Years ago she said it was because she wants the people to focus on her music, not the person she sleeps with. If there is something between her and Tessa, even if I honestly think they aren't in a relationship, just really good friends, she would never said anything, especially because they are both celebrities!

I was like damn girl when she said "Let the vagina have a monologue" and they showed the image of her naked with a mirror on her vagina biggrin I was not expecting that biggrin

I want almost her entire closet as well. She has such great taste in fashion.

I hope her deal with Diddy ends soon. I don't think he has really used his pull to really help her music career. There is ALOT more that he can do. He is the richest rapper in the industry. He can do whatever he wants to do. I saw an interview in which he said he liked that Janelle kept her clothes on and her music BUT then why not use your pull if you believe in her? All of these industry folks are full of B.S. and I am glad Janelle went on and created her own label and did her own thing. That is why I have a lot of respect for Prince. He used his pull and platform to try to help her. He told BET to put her on the show so she could perform and....they DID it. Diddy's son just got accepted at Havard so I know he can pull strings to get what he wants. lol

I saw Nate Wonder in person, he walked right by me and saw Janelle up close when she was walking on stage. I don't think Janelle is gay and I never thought she was. I figured she was dating him because she attends all her events with him. Nate seems like he is private and low key.

I think they have been dating for a long time. Janelle is an liberated quirky artist and she likes to feel and have a connection with the people she works with and there is nothing wrong with that. I actually think the music and art translates better when you have a connection with the people you work with because its more authentic (Prince was the same) All of this still doesn't necessarily mean she is in a open relationship (but then again anything is possible but I don't believe she is in a relationship with Tessa. Tessa pretty much said she was playing a character and if people want to believe the characters being played than they have accomplished what they set out too... (something like that she said) but the response was brilliant. IMO, if they were really was in a relationship I don't think she would have wordded the response that way (but I still could be wrong). However, You can clearly see she admires and respect her friendship with Janelle. Tessa also comes across as extremely intelligent. I like that Janelle keeps a lot of grounded and intellectual people around her

lol lol lol I died and rose again at that, brilliant. I love her fashion and yes girl I want her closet. Shoot, I want her! lol I just love everything about the woman. She is my girl crush biggrin razz lol Her make up artist is bomb.com. I think she has the best make up artist in the business. Her make up is always on point. She does work for other celebrities but her best work is with Janelle IMO. I love that Janelle actually puts in WORK to help the other artists on her label.

Yes I love this about Janelle and I agree, Janelle knows how to pick her friends/collaborators. I personally think Janelle is bisexual but who knows she can speak about herself in her songs or it could be a total fantasy, you never know with her tbh. I can't stand Diddy, he's really full of bullshit, he wants to be associated with Janelle (get money essentially) but he could have done so much more for her over the years. With Prince was totally different yes. He really believed in her and her artistry.

We don't know of course if her and Nate are in an open relationship like it's been speculated but I wouldn't be surprised tbh if that was the case. lol and I'm not saying this because of the Tessa recent rumours.

Yes! I don't like Jidenna's music that much tbh but the other artists are interesting. She has the face of a doll and she has perfect skin even without make up. Maybe she's really an android biggrin

Her skin is flawless, so gorgeous. I don't particularly care for Jidanna's music either.

I think this is a possibility as well but I honestly don't think of her as either or, she is just Janelle to me lol and I will always love her regardless. What label do you think she should go to once her contract with Diddy ends? Do you think she should become fully independent? I agree Diddy is just using her for money.

I wonder if it will ever end at this point. I thought it would have expired with Electric lady. I'm scared he doesn't want to let her go tbh. I don't think she would be fully indie at this point, probably she would choose another partnership, hopefully not with Jay z. Can you imagine going from a shark to another one?

Oh God I hope not! confused I know she is friends with Solange but I hope she doesn't even THINK to look that way. Its nothing but destruction and corruption with anything associated with that man and everyone else associated with him. Ironically, he is good friends with Diddy. Birds of a feather flock together. What makes you scared that Diddy doesn't want to let her go? What is he gaining? He hardly promotes her.

It's just a feeling that I have. He has French Montana but who else does he have with an actual following at this point? He may be a snake but surely he's not stupid. I wouldn't see her as a fully indie artist at this point tbh because I think she wants a bigger platform and reaching as many people as she can but at the same time she doesn't want to loose artistic control on her stuff.

No I wouldn't call her an Indie artist either but I wouldn't call her a pop star either. She really has it all to be it though. She just needs the marketing and the extra push (thats the problem). She hangs in the same circles as Jay Z, Diddy, Bey, Solange etc but I don't see the point in hanging in these circles if they are not really helping you towards your career. If someone says they believe in you then they should invest in you.Diddy has really let her down. She should be a much bigger star than what she is and she DESERVES to be.

She's essentially on her own label considering that Diddy never did much promo for her but probably that was part of the deal for not having him involved creatively. Maybe it would be better to sign a partnership directly with Atlantic records. I just know I don't want to see Diddy's name attached to her record anymore biggrin She's friendly with Solange even though I noticed they don't hang out much anymore, maybe Janelle is finally seing Solange's true colors, or maybe they are hanging out but not in public. I never liked Solange tbh but it's not like she is a pop star of Beyonce and Jay Z's level either.

I agree, I don't like Solange either and I think she is fake just like her sister. I don't know why she has a feature on the Electric Lady song when you can't even hear Solange's vocals. Not to mention she didn't even bother to appear in Janelle's video for the song. I hope she stops hanging around them. Erykah Badu seemed like she was a better friend and supporter.

I think she should sign a partnership with a record label and let Diddy go. I feel he gets too much credit for her helping her and he does nothing.

I noticed the Bad Boy stamps at the end of Django Jane and Make me feel vanished shortly after they came out. Now it's just Wondaland biggrin Yes I get a fake vibe from Solange but I don't think she didn't want to appear on the video for Electric lady, after all, as you said, she does very little on the song, her presence wasn't really important. Janelle put Esperanza Spalding and Kimbra in the video and they are way cooler than Solange imo so I wasn't mad at all Solange wasn't there. Of course Erykah is better biggrin and she was one of the first artists to support Jane, I love that her and Janelle always call each other twins, it's cute.

Janelle did a nice interview yesterday on BBC1, it's online anyway. She even talked a little bit about Prince.

Then what was the whole point in making her a feature? I am hoping as you say Janelle may see Solange's true colors for what they are. I loved she put those other talented ladies in the video. I really love the friendship between Erykah and Janelle. It feels more authentic and you can see they really respect one another. This is one of my fav videos of them when she surprised Janelle on stage. It just lights my heart.

OMG, can you please post the interview or a link?

What sound do you think she might be going in with this new album? I really love the Prince inspired song and I love when she raps.

Janelle is just a bad bish, I can't it just so much slayage, she is so glorious, I love this look. She also talks a little bit more about Make Me Feel.

I think this video with her and Tessa is cute

I love how Janelle supports other Black women and Black female celebrities whether they are actresses or singers. It just goes to show that you don't have to have a certail level of fame or money to do that but you just have to have a heart of gold and passion for wanting your fellow sister to succeed. She is excellent role model for young girls.

The interview: (she talks about the new album; it's cool she invited the Black Panther cast to Wondaland when they were making the movie, the cast alreadu mentioned this thing during the movie promo but it's still cool )

Yes I love that Janelle appears to develop real friendships/relationships in the industry. It's not really common to see that. I noticed a certain realness about her in the small things that she does, a realness that it's not common among todays' stars and she supports other artists unconditionally even when she's not gaining anything from it. Tessa was emotional when she saw her and after she left, it's cute.

About the sound of the record, she said to the Guardian Prince was helping collecting sounds from the record before he passed. I think the Prince influence on this could be stronger than her other projects but at the same time I think this will be her most accessible/commercial record sonically.

Thank you so much for posting this video! Janelle is so inspiring. She is reminds me of myself when she speaks about America and society. She is like my long lost sister lol I love her passion. I really love how she talked about her inspiration behind Make Me Feel. I am glad she did the record because I feel that many people (namely males) have tried to compartmentize her womanhood since the beginning of her career. Women should be given the same freedom and rights to present themselves the way they want too. If they want to be fully clothed, that should not take their feminity away. I liked what she said because men have always been the judges of how women should present themselves. We as women are always told to please men and their fantasies instead of being confident and comfortable with who WE are and how we want to present our sexuality and feminity. I am glad she did the song and showed her sexy side (sexy but still tasteful and classy) and she did it when SHE wanted too. I am looking forward to this new album. I also liked how she stood by cursing on the record (she did it because that is how she felt) and I wouldn't want her to do anything less as an artist, sometimes you have to use it to get certain points and messages across.

On Black Panther: Janelle is a sweet person so I am not surprised she would invite Black Pather to Wondaland. She is always mentoring and encouraging other Black women in the industry and I believe she is friends with Lupita. It only seems fitting she would invite them based on the direction she is taking her album and her Black empowerment movement.

I think Janelle is able to make geniune bonds with people because she is a geniune person herself. She is very humble, grounded and open and people seem to gravitate to that. She is not about the superficial aspect of Hollywood and she really wants to advocate for better for her people and women. She also had an excellent mentor in Prince who played a fundamental part in encouraging to remain the way she is and not allow the industry to change her. I like how she talked about the abuse of power within the music industry. I would be interested in hearing her talk more about this because I know she has probably seen a lot behind the scenes and experienced a lot herself.

You're welcome. As a woman she inspires me as well. She didn't like how she was pressured to show more skin years ago when she was wearing tuxedos everywhere as much as she didn't like when people used her image to slut shame other women. She said some years ago that if she were told she had to wear tuxedos to have a career when she started, she would have been half naked. She just don't like labels, it's clear even in her music. Her music covers a lot of different influences. So I'm likely expecting other sexy stuff from her on this record but done in her own way. She's right about fighting the stereotypes attached to black artists for decades, especially in the US. She's doing that her whole career.

I also love how she speaks about Prince. Even though it's clear how much he was important to her she never shared private moments between them. He was a private man exactly like she is. He wouldn't appreciate all the blabbering a lot of people associated with him have done since his passing on very personal topics imo. Damaris Lewis said something similar after he passed if I recall correctly.

Last thing I'm happy to hear more about Janelle on the record and I appreciate that it seems to be a different concept but a part of me wonder if she's ever going to finish the Cindi Mayweather saga. I hope so. It would be cool if Netflix or some other platform would buy the rights to do a mini serie about Cindi one day. Janelle could be involved in the writing and star in it.

She's actually showing her ass in the make me feel video biggrin but I get your point. She's always artistic in her choices so I don't think it looks cheap. She's sending a message with this song. I'm not against artists showing skin at all if it's done in a creative way. The problem is the industry has become saturated with people/mostly women (because the industry is sexist) getting naked on screen without a meaning behind it and especially with really poor music to accompany the visuals, basically they use nudity as a way to cover the music is garbage.

Never been a huge fan of hers, but it's undeniable she's talented. I'm glad she finally changed her wardrobe style. She was becoming a Pee-Wee Herman type cartoon character with that stupid haircut and suit.

I am not against artists showing skin either but most of the female artists sexually exploit there bodies and this is problematic. If you notice its mostly the Black female pop stars that are hyper exploitive in how they are presented. The industry is very racist with always having Black females play these Jezebel and sex kitten roles (these negative stereotypes on Black feminity goes back to Slavery days). That is why I have a problem with it. This continues to tear down the Black Community and the Black Woman and whether people realize this or not the images that are often perpetuated in the media on Black women and men influence policy, social constructions and how we are viewed by society.

I am not in support of simply showing your ass just to sell records and I don't think Janelle is doing that. She actually has something powerful to say and she is an excellent role model for young girls.
