Are we really hating on her for something we didn't even know? Janelle haven't spoken about the song (yet at least). She only said when asked about Prince that he was helping her collecting sounds for the album before he died and that she misses him a lot. The rest was all media generated stuff. Prince is credited on the synth. We weren't in a room with them to know who created what on the track. Maybe he didn't even write the damn song or maybe he wrote something and he didn't want to be credited for that. It wasn't the first time for him to do things like that.

I just heard the song on a popular radio station in my country and I'm really happy at the moment. She's finally being played on pop radio stations. I was scared the industry was trying to push her to do another Yoga track for sales but I'm so glad she didn't go there, probably just because she has her own label. If that wasn't the case, we would hear her do trap songs every 2 minutes.

I guess the D.J. and other guest at the party all got together in a meeting to back up Janelle.

As far as ethical if he gave her the music and her job was to come up with the lyrics how the hell is that unethical?

He gave her the song to do as she wanted and if he did not want her to have say on the lyrics he could have written some for her.

Once again stop hating on any women Prince spent two minutes with.

Hate is a strong word... I am just not that excited about the fact that so many of those who spent 2 minutes with Prince try so hard to profit from him.

Janelle clearly is very successful in her 'project' though, and (to my regret, since I find her singing rather annoying) we hear her key title several times a day on our national radios.

Perhaps her and her 'team' could push their 'influence' a little further and help radios play more of the many actual Prince tracks other than her rip off of them or the usual same three that are only played once in a blue moon (ie. 1999, When Doves Cry & Let's Go Crazy).

If he gave her the track he wanted her to profit. Janelle and her team have nothing to do with radio reserch which is the real reason radio plays the same 3 songs.

We all know he supported Janelle when he was alive and well even appearing on her last album and letting her open shows for him. She is not some stranger jumping on the bandwagon.

I love this track and I am so glad Prince is back on the radio.

Prince is not back on the radio, Nikki Janelle is, and she sure knows the moves that work.

Prince is not back on the radio, Nikki Janelle is, and she sure knows the moves that work.

If you do not want to believe that Prince helped her with the music then do not believe it. Nevermind the DJ Lenka said that Prince gave her the track play at a party years ago or the people at the party who heard it. Nevermind Prince's track record of giving tracks away.

I bet you think he had nothing to do with the Time albums as well. Those were Prince records just like this is a Prince track. Prince did this stuff for over 30 years and you still do not believe it.

I wouldn't go that far lol

I understand that Lenka said Prince had played the same music as what is contained in Janelle's track but still cannot see any evidence that Prince had allowed Janelle to use the track in question, nor whether he would have been happy for her to exploit it in the way that she is doing now. Ian Boxill was stopped from commercialising Deliverance, but it's now ok for Janelle to do whatever she wants with Prince's music even if it involves profanity which we all know Prince was against... None of this makes sense.

Are you really comparing an artist that we know he worked with in the past and wanted to keep working with to Ian? Janelle is saying she was his opening act in St. Barts and Ian is a studio engineer with two idiot musicians from Oregon neither of whom knew Prince from Adam.

You realize the estate had a contract that exactly stated that Ian could not profit from any material they worked on together. I am sure if the estate finds something for Janelle they will spring into action but keep in mind Prince played and put tracks together for loads of people. Unless their is something in writing they are going to have a hard time stopping this track and I am sure Janelle's lable cleared this already to avoid a costly copyright infringment suit if the track was even copyrighted.

If he wrote something for Janelle and decided to give whatever he wrote to her I think it's obvious he wanted to see her profit from the song. As I said before we don't even know if he wrote something on this song but if he did Janelle was a protegè of Prince, do you really wanna compare her to the other guy?

My same thought. Smh.

Anyway, Janelle is in London right now. She did a sort of showcase apparently.

Here she is today with a guy on the BBC radio.

1zd9k3l.jpg

Some "info" about some songs on the album they heard, from a music critic from the Telegraph.

Neil McCormick:

https://twitter.com/neil_mccormick/status/93664093767917572

Saw @JanelleMonae deliver a short set previewing her new album. Next level sh*t. Like a woke female Kanye meets Prince doing the Vagina monologues as a funk musical. Still recovering.

It's on the Radio2 playlist and Annie Mac is supporting it lots on Radio 1.

Sure deserves to be a hit.. but it needs to get put onto Spotify 'hit' playlists for it to stand any chance of that.

It sounds very like Kiss, and Kiss sounds very like a lot of James Brown songs, but this doesn't sound like a James Brown song. I've been pondering this for a few days now.

My point is not to get into what is or isn't 12-bar blues and what "production" does or doesn't mean, but just that there is clearly more to this song than being a rip off of Kiss.

I think the song has an interesting structure. It begins a certain way with that sort of futuristic beat that it enters immediately in your head then in the pre chorus it sounds completely like a contemporary pop song and in the chorus it sounds like a Prince track but somehow it all works really well together.

I don't think she will stop being herself any time soon. She's constanly evolving like a Pokemon since her indie the Audition days. She really is a gem!! one of the most beautiful, talented and smart ladies in music (now even in movies biggrin). She should be celebrated more than Beyonce and Rihanna because she has it all. Archandroid is a classic and it hasn't aged a day. I think on Dirty Computer we will hear some more explicit sexual stuff compared to her Cindi days but not in a bad way:D simply because I don't think she will have her android alter ego this time around. I was wondering how will she release the emotion picture/movie? On line? Theaters?

Im glad you came back so now we can get all the Janelle Monae info first hand lol I will def be checking in this thread. Yea I LOVE her style. I just want to have her wardrobe stylist lol Its so unique and quirky, I love it! Her make up artist is a beast as well! OMG the Audition! Look how far our girl has come! I remember when I first saw her performed Sincerely Jane on PBS, great performance and when she first toured with Bruno and BOB. Its amazing how far she has come in her career and she has still stayed true to herself! I am so proud of her and she is such an inspiration. She reminds me so much of myself. She is not afraid to be who she is and doesn't care what others think about that. She is way more gorgeous than Beyawnce and Rihanna and way more talented. She deserves to be more celebrated and she does have it all as well as intelligence and charisma. Its such a pity. IMO, I think its because she is not a sex kitten and does not sexually exploit herself because she is more talented than those other girls. Ive seen her live many times. She can put on a damn great show and she is a phenomenal artist and actress too. I will remain prayerful that she will get her respect and just due one of these days. I will keep on supporting her and defending her good name and talent.

I am not sure how she will release the movie but I am guessing it will be an online exclusive? Many people are speculating on this alleged relationship with Tessa. What are your thoughts on this? After an interview Tessa gave about the Make Me Feel video, I doubt she and Janelle are in a relationship and are just really good friends. They have known each other for a very long time. With that being said, I like that Janelle is playing around with these themes and raising these issues. There is no Black female artist from this era that has touched on homosexuality/bisexuality. Whether the relationship with Tessa is true or not, I would like to see Janelle explore these issues more and the many stigma/consequences associated with them in the Black community.
