Best Buy Says Bye to CD

RIP CD

Source: https://eblnews.com/video...ext-321186

The future of physical music isn't looking good. According to Billboard, consumer electronics company Best Buy will no longer carry physical CDs and Target may be following suit in the near future.

Best Buy notified music suppliers that they will cease selling CDs at stores beginning July 1. The move is sure to hurt the already declining sales of CDs as consumers are switching to streaming platforms such as Spotify, Apple Music, and Tidal in large numbers. CD sales have already dropped by a sizable 18.5 percent in the past year, Billboard reports.

There has been reports Target is next in line to stop selliing CD's. Who would have thought it end like this?

I'm not sure about Target. Macy Gray told me Target acts like a record company, which is why so many artists have special editions of their albums at Target. They ask for extra tracks or special covers, etc to make it exclusive to them. I have purposely gone to Target to get a Target-only edition of an album (most recently the CD & vinyl of Man of the Woods by the Org favorite Justin Timberlake). The earliest I remember is an EP from Tina Turner (which included a "Baby I'm A Star" cover).

All that said, I'm curious to see if they really get rid of CDs totally. It does seem odd to buy a CD sometimes, but I still love a box set or a special edition (eg: Listen Without Prejudice Vol 1 by GM). But - they could.

I read today where Target was wanting to only pay for the CD when the CD was bought...pay as you kinda thing.

These days, I would not be surprised if that was a thing. It makes me wonder if that was a rule in 2009 if/how Prince got paid. Because I constantly saw a lot of Lotusflow3r CDs piled up for a couple of years.

I buy all of my CDs online anyway.Stores like Best Buy and Target never have a huge selection of CDs...mostly just new titles and ‘best of’ compilations.

I feel bad because I got rid of most of my CD collection, which was huge. Everything is going digital now. I guess I'm kinda old-fashioned.

Yep, serious. Hubby and I combined our collections when we got married, I was a George Michael, Prince, Baby's, Cyndi Lauper, Madonna kinda girl, 38 Special, REO, Kansas, he was ZZ Top, Lynard Skynard, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Robert Plant, kinda guy. lol When we were 1st married one of our 1st purchases was a stereo system that played, albums, cassettes and 8 tracks. lol Now we have about 100 CD's probably more, with all the CD's our kids left behind when they moved (anybody need a Hansen CD?) lol

I hardly ever buy CD's from Best Buy. On the rare occassion I do buy new releases, it's always nice to check Target for the bonus tracks. I hope the bonus tracks don't go away.

The last time I went to Best Buy, I could literally count the CD's there. I wouldn't so much say that it's a sign of the times but on the cool... I see more and more people buying vinyl.

Best Buy drastically reduced their CD sections. Just 5 years ago most stores in New York would have a huge selection. But people can't buy something if it isn't there.

As for vinyl, it seems most of the buyers are "hipsters " who are into it now because it's considered cool. And $20-30 for an LP ??? Insanity!!

I'd say it's a shame to see CDs go the way of the dodo but the last CD I bought was the Purple Rain Remaster and I don't see any new music on the horizon that's worth buying anyway. I'll continue to get Prince, Springsteen and Michael Jackson albums in a physical format but other than those 3, it's not worth it. Besides, I'm running out of shelf space.

Yeah, nothing wrong with that. I still buy vinyl (or CD, depending on the edition, etc). I have a little setup to record my vinyl to lossless audio. I store it on a cloud drive in my house, sync the music I want to my phone to have on-the-go, and I'm good. It's not so different from the old days where you would buy an LP, then immediately record it to cassette to have in the car or on your walkman and boom box.

I don't buy CDs or LPs much, though. Nothing thrills me in music these days, at least not as much as say 20 years ago, or even a decade ago. But I do support the artists that I love and want to collect. The same sorta goes for DVDs. I think the only DVDs I've purchased in the last two years have been Family Guy seasons or a Star Wars bluray. And maybe a concert DVD from folks like Madonna or George Michael (further back). Maybe it comes with age that I just don't need a bunch of stuff to be happy. But vinyl does a body good.

My husband used to have an extensive CD collection. It just got to the point where it was just taking up space and nowhere to put anything. We gave our CDs away to charity/thrift stores, so someone is listening to some real good music! lol

.

I remember the days where you could walk into record shops and they would buy/trade your music--that seems to be a thing of the past now.
