Why didn't Michael Jackson liked to be seen in public with Prince at all?

Michael Jackson didn't entirely dislike Prince as the media claimed. I bet in private, MJ and P respected each other.

So if MJ was going out with Madonna in public for years (a singer who, in my opinion, was more crude and vile than P in both her work and personality), why didn't MJ like to be seen in public with Prince?

Was it MJ's personal choice, or he wanted to keep the public guessing? MJ and P had appeared at some events at the same time, but never acknowledged each other. The only public connections between MJ and Prince are their shared associations, like Judith Hill, Justin Timberlake and Tatianna Thumbskill (sp?).

Prince and MJ were constantly compared to each other back then. They were both huge stars in their own right, but it didn't stop the comparisons musically, with their eccentricities in style, dance moves, etc. I'm sure it got very tiring for each of them to be compared to the other. And I think Prince saw himself on a whole other plane of existence from Michael musically. Prince didn't just sing and dance, he played the instruments himself. If they were seen out and about together, it would have only fueled those comparisons. Plus their "rivalry" amongst the fans didn't hurt the PR around both of their album sales, it may have helped. And MJ believed Prince was "out to get him" somehow. MJ believed Prince was doing some kind of mystic stuff on him, reading his mind, sending some kind of thoughts to him and stuff. Plus I think Prince may have thought Michael was a little weird and Michael may have thought Prince was a little weird. The only thing they probably had in common was their ability to perform and hold an audience captive.

And besides, why should they have been seen in public together? There are a lot of musicians and stars that Prince was never seen in public with, so why did you pick MJ and not one of the many of other stars?

Why would they be seen in public together? Having a respect for the other guy's work doesn't mean they were friends.

That one video of P, MJ and James Brown sharing one stage back in the early '80s is priceless.

They did respect each other alot and spent time together on multiple occasions. I’m not sure them being seen in public together would mean anything

After what happened then could you blame Prince for not wanting to be seen with Michael again! biggrin

But seriously though I don't think it means much that they weren't seen together in public. Besides who knows what happens backstage at awards shows or in venues. It's perfectly possible that at times their paths crossed and they said hello to each other away from any cameras.

If anything Id say it was Prince who avoided pics with Mike. He chose not to go participate in the We are the World recording where he would possibly be seen with Mike and turned down the Bad duet with Mike.

Quite simply, MJ was in LA with the music biz scene. Whereas Prince spent most of his time in Minnesota, on tour, or in the studio. Completely different circles of people. I don’t think they were buddy buddy, but they obviously were completely aware of each other, respected each other’s art and respected each other’s hustle.

They moved in different worlds - Michael was a hermit outside of the studio and touring, and Prince was always in the studio making music. Plus the fact both of them could not go out in public unless there was a phalanx of bodyguards and/or in crazy disguises.

.

They may have respected each other, but were not hang out buddies, Michael liked his aging celebrity friends like Liz Taylor and Marlon Brando, along with his young friends (Not implying anything wrong - just Michael preferred the innocence and non greediness of children over grabby adults), Prince hung out mostly with sexy chicks and the guys in his band. There was also distance, MJ was mostly in LA, Prince was in Minneapolis until the late 90s at least when he decamped to LA for winter, but even then he was mostly working.

.

I don't think they were that interested in a close friendship, Prince felt Michael was not in his orbit and Michael saw Prince as a womaniser, over competitive and a meany, it was the media that lumped them together as both were very successful black entertainers who had crossed over to a largely white audience in the 1980s and both were quite weird and eccentric. It was lazy journalism as they assumed as both were weird, successful black guys, they had to be best mates and they were not. Not through hate, just lack of interest - also both were too busy (Especially Prince) making music and working on their careers for close friendships.

.

Finally I think because both were in the public eye and public scrutiny so much, outside of their music and promotion of it, they liked down time to themselves or close company. Both I feel had hermit like tendencies. I also think Prince learned from the example of Michael went through that his private life should remain private and it remained largely out of the tabloids, although in 1985 when Chick told a bunch of lies to the Enquirer, some lies came out like the ESP Bubbles story above and voodoo rumours - but no one accused Prince of some of the weird shit Michael did.

.

Thats my opinion, and I just feel it worked - one heartwarming story I did read was that Michael and Prince shared musical influences and may have bonded over it, the story of Packages of Sly Stone shows coming into Paisley Park from MJJ Productions for instance and both claimed James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Sly Stone, Little Richard and Jackie Wilson amongst others as influences, although MJ and Prince had their own individual influences too (MJ - Sammy Davis Junior, Peter Pan), (Prince - Joni Mitchell and Santana).

Got some kind of love for you, and I don't even know your name

Just wondering what was the reason for this thread. How do you know that Michael didn’t like to be seen in public with Prince? Why is it that it couldn’t have been that Prince didn’t want to be seen with Michael in public? This is such a childish thread and just an underhanded way to diss Michael? Btw, if you are going to start a thread like this, why not say why didn’t Prince like to be seen in public with Bruce Springsteen, Mick Jagger, George Michael or many, many others in public?

One silly rumour I read was that in 1986, Michael Jackson had a made up monobrow permanently placed on his head and decided to send all his remaining mascara to Prince.

Oh, I'm in no way trying to diss Michael! Really, maybe I'm just starstruck. I had seen pics of Michael with many celebrities, from classic Hollywood (Gregory Peck, Elizabeth Taylor, Marlon Brando, Vincent Price) to contemporary (Britney Spears, Beyonce), and found it so fascinating and interesting. I just wanted to know if, on any chance, there was a photograph of Michael and Prince together. No way am I'm being childish.

I agree, and when you think about it,Prince was rarely seen in public with male artists, period (as you pointed out).Prince seems like the type of person who didn't really "hang out" with men anyway. He was more interested in beautiful women biggrin

Right he only hung with mike a couple times in private. They played ping pong, talked about the Bad track and went to have dinner at the Jacksons. He said he admired Michael and was very sad about his passing.
