Gah!!!

Look, Prince is dead--so if his songs are going to be played, somebody else is going to have to play them. And people want to--he's too important for people to not give a nod to when they're in Minneapolis (at least, and he's personally important to enough other artists that he's going to get covered pretty regularly). He also had a habit of mentioning death in a number of songs--you can't just imagine those songs away. I Would Die 4 U was a great song before he died, one lots of people liked (and still do). You don't say (or shouldn't say) Oh, you can't play that now! Let's Go Crazy talks about dying and has an elevator in the chorus! Yeah, it was hard to listen to for awhile, but it's one of the songs it makes sense for people to play--it's accessible, gives itself over to a lot of people's abilities--and the crowd can become involved. What do you want people to play? It wasn't Purple Rain or Nothing Compares 2 U again, at least. And if you really just object to people playing his songs at all... well, too bad. He covered songs in concert by artists he respected, people cover him in the same way. Get over it. He's dead, and whining every time someone plays one of his songs is boring. I'd prefer people played a lot more varied songs by him--but I realize that these big shows are going to have to go with the popular ones in order to hit the larger audience.

Oh, I know. more of the same bullshit negativity.

I just watched him perform "Supplies" and rocked the shit out of it. The show opened with that. Fallon filmed a special intro for this show, and Prince was in it as was First Avenue. Jimmy came out wearing purple mittens.

The show is live right now. Questlove not only has the symbol on his kick, he has a tamborocca on a cymbal. I expect more Prince easter eggs throughout the show.

Justin explains why he did put Prince in there. And that he got the thumbs up from Questlove to do it and how it was going to play out. He said he got uncut footage of Prince from Purple Rain for the video, and the actual "vocal stems..the actual recording" of "I Would Die 4 U" to play with. So everyone wanna be mad - tough shit.

Edit: The Roots played "Jungle Love" in the outro.

I don't think Prince will ever be "relevant" again but surely it's a good thing that more people are watching his YouTube videos? Why does it matter if its Justin Timberlake who is responsible for it? The more people who are checking out Prince's music, the more likely it is that we'll get new Prince releases. And I don't care if it's Justin Timberlake, Justin Bieber or anybody else who helps that to happen.

I don't understand. Just because some people have a grudge against JT for mocking Prince's height and lack of chart success in his later career then he shouldn't be allowed pay tribute to him?

People were checking out the YOUTUBE channel before Justin's half time performance and the estate made 16 million dollars in reveneu from music last year.

Prince is not going anywhere as he left a vast music catalogue that he has not even been dug into fully. If you think the only problem with Justin is his stupid joke then you have no clue.

As far as the Super Bowl performance. Justin has weak songs and what he should have done was come out and perform one or two with the full band and left the dancing alone. It is Broadway or is he in a band.

Look at what people are saying. Some of whom knew Prince.

Okay punkass justin Timberlake. You was cool till you pulled that Prince bullshit. You dissed Prince on a track of yours and you dissed him onstage when you lowered the mic stand onstage when prince won an award. Later for ya ass

Actress Cynthia Erivo, in self-professed “anger,” added: “To bring out Prince to improve this mediocrity is a damn embarrassment. I’m [fuming],” while writer Roxane Gay noted that Prince would likely be “furious” if he were able to watch.

And then ANGER!!! To bring out Prince to improve this mediocrity is a damn embarrassment. I’m fumin #HalftimeShow

Timberlake earned support from various celebrities, however, including Jimmy Fallon, Nick Jonas, Evangeline Lily, Ellen DeGeneres, and Chely Wright — all of whom praised the former N*SYNC member’s work.

“Wow, that was unreal,” Jonas tweeted after the show, which Lily indicated was fronted by a “class act” performer.

Read on for the wide range of reactions to Timberlake’s Super Bowl LII halftime show.

Justin Timberlake threw Prince on that Bed, Bath and Beyond curtain and I was just staring at the screen like:

Yes, and I was one of them but in order to generate continued interest, as well as introduce younger fans to Prince's music, having a pop star like JT perform a tribute at the most watched sporting event in America is a huge plus.

Regardless of your personal feelings on JT, having him perform a Prince song at the Superbowl and then go on Jimmy Fallon and say Prince is the greatest musician of all time is A GOOD THING. It will encourage more people my age and younger to check out Prince's stuff and with the increased demand for Prince music comes the release of more Prince music from the vault. This isn't a hard concept to grasp but for some reason some people can't put their personal feelings aside and accept that JT promoting Prince is beneficial for everyone.

I give Timberlake massive respect for his Prince tribute. It was well-done, and the song choice was excellent. And consider this:

A Supebowl halftime performance is the biggest thing any artist will ever do. To dedicate two minutes or so of a very short performance to begin with to another artist - in fact, the hometown's artist - was pretty dang impressive to me. I can only think of one other artist who performed someone else's songs during their halftime performance:

Prince.

So even if you didn't like Timberlake's performance, I think he deserves a LOT of respect for the effort. And personally, I thought the performance of IWD4U was really good.

And GIGANTIC PROPS to whoever lit up the parking lot to make the stadium the centerpiece of prince . If that didn't bring tears to your eyes, or pride to your heart, then you're on the wrong website.

But the rest of Timberlake's performance?

Meh. It didn't do anything for me. He didn't sing much, his dancing looked like an old man dancing with kids, and I don't know any of his songs anyways.

However, I'm always going to appreciate Timberlake for what he did to honor Prince's memory. Excellent!

Justine Timberlake's love of Prince will have no bearing on the poplarity of Prince's music in the future. Good lord Prince needs annoiting from Justine like people in hell need extra warmth.

Justin should worry about his own musicianship and music and leave Prince's alone. Prince left a rack of song and a rack of associates both do an excellent job of promoting his work. Justin's approval is not needed.

I am not a hugh fan but I found it a little shocking as well. Playing the Super Bowl before an album release and tour is hugh for the kick off. It seemed like he had no energy and I really think if he had come out and just did two songs with just his band he would have been good.

He needs to lose the dancers as he is almost 40 and I watched this with a 12 years old who did not know who he was and keep calling him an old guy.

He needs to put the focus on the music kind of like Prince did doing the One Night Alone shows.
