I think of "legacy acts" as people like Elton John and the Stones, who have lots of history and a ton of hits, but who are not really that likely to make new music that really changes the public's perception of them. Basically, acts that can still make a lot of money playing their old songs live, but interest in the new music is low.

.

Beyonce albums are still treated like major cultural events. I don't think she needs to be doing an Oldies Tour anytime soon.

Since it's been 20 years, what is Beyonce's biggest contributions to the music industry?

I would say progressing the merger of the vocal concepts of singing and rapping into one vocal performance rather than them being separate concepts. Goes back to when she was with Destiny's Child. It grew from being a trendy movement and fad to make music sound edgy enough to hit the clubbers within pop music aesthetic to be a staple of vocal performance to this day. Beyonce/Destiny's Child deserves lot of credit for that and they get it.

She don't need to, but she can because of the volume of hits she has, reputation as a performer and a supportive fan base. She's not in the Elton John/Rolling Stones level of legacy but that shouldn't be the standard of what makes a legacy act

Without a doubt. She's only five years newer than Mary J. Blige.

And your point?! Beyonce was in a girl group. She really didn't come into her own as a SOLO star until the early 00s. Mary, on the other hand, was a smash out the box with her debut.

And no way i would put her near my Top 20 list artist of last 20 yrs.

[Edited 1/20/18 14:50pm]

Fakeyonce won’t be remembered. She will just be another singer that was. A lot of people can’t stand her. Her music is being forced down our throats like a lot of these new artists who suck. She will fade away along with her fake hair and wind machine.

Preach!!! This article is too imo no more than hype other than the fact of Bee to soon face irrelevancy.

Beyonce still has megastar status, so for legacy I equate to big stars who aren't on top of their game now and rely on their back catalog to sell tickets. If she dropped an album now it would be a big deal to the mainstream. Which other current artists could do that? Not too many. I'm surprised she hasn't brought out a duet style album with Jay yet. Well rap and singing. Beyonce is like a modern day Diana Ross in terms of Diana's appeal to the mainstream in her heyday. Very Tina Turner-esque too. I wonder 20, 30 years from now where she will stand up alongside Aretha, Gladys et al as greatest female soul/R&B singers. But like Whitney she's transcended that label so I think Beyonces legacy will be as more a Pop artist who crossed over. I'm not really a big Beyonce fan but you have to give her props she has made a huge success of her career.

I'm not going to try to argue that Beyonce hasn't had a long, successful career but the she's simply a big fish in the small pond that is today's music scene. Her predecessors (i.e. Diana, Tina, Madonna, Whitney, Janet, Mariah) were big fish in a vast ocean; all had stiffer competition and in many ways, more of an uphill battle to achieve the massive success they're known for than Beyonce.

People may argue "Well it's not fair to compare the two because people actually bought music back then" and that should be evident of the fact that Beyonce is not on that level of stardom. Today she's about as big a deal as an artist can be (sorta) but if you were to actually compare what she has accomplished to those before her then she ranks far lower. The one amazing thing that I can definitely give Beyonce is that while her star doesn't burn as brightly, it has burned longer than those who came before her (except arguably Diana).

Beyonce including her time in DC, has been a recognizable figure on music for about 20 years. Diana between 1962 when she was with The Supremes up to the mid-80s was still a relevant figure in music even if her star power was declining.

I have to admit, Beyonce is a powerhouse performer of which Diana NEVER could have kept up with. She's the modern day Tina. Diana couldnt even keep up with Tina today if she tried. Diana could have never roll around on the floor shake her ponytail all over the place and act a damn fool get back up and continue singing live like Beyonce. That's what future legends do. No shade to Diana, I have seen her live several times.

From what I have seen of Beyonce's performances, I can't say I'm impressed though her style is evocative of Tina who was a red hot performer.

I guess I can ride with the notion of Beyonce being a hot performer instead of the idea of her being a great dancer like many say she is.

Well, if that's the case, then Ross's STAR power pales in comparison to that of Aretha Franklin and Gladys Knight. Those women started much earlier and has lasted just as long in the industry through the highs and lows.

It's not about replacing another artist over another. It's simply about proper acknowledgement and giving fair and respectable props.

Ciara for example is a much better dancer than Beyonce but dont have the songs. Not a lot of female dancers out here doing it like Beyonce. At the present time she is the only one I can think of that brings a high energy performance at most times. Janet still leaving them in the dust for now....even Madonna. See below for some exmples
