What Frank Ocean (And Any New Artist) Can Learn From The Incomparable Mariah Carey!

I am still a Frank Ocean fan, but his rant against the grammys and its producer last year left a sour taste in my mouth.

He might have had somewhat good arguements as to why he didn't want to participate in the awards, but the biggest crime was that he had no interest in redeeming himself after that disasterous performance he gave (and was warned against) the last time.

Mariah Carey on the other hand won't stand for such nonsense. She came to last years New Years Rockin Eve woefully unprepared, giving the non-performance of the ages.

Not satisfied with that being possibly her last televised performance, she boldy came back and gave, if for only one night) a performance worthy of her name.

It's a lesson Frank Ocean in particular and any new artist in general can learn from.

If Frank is satisfied with that piss-poor performance he left us with he will always be thought of as extremely over-rated. Does he even care about giving his fans a decent performance?

Will Chris Brown ever pay attention to people like Beyonce and Justin Timberlake and actually come prepared for a performance without overwhelmingly obnoxious vocal tracks and awkward looking dance moves?

If I were an artist I'd like to think that my goal would be to impress the audience as opposed to going through it for my audience.

Kudos to you Mariah! You have old-school pride

And this is what they're calling redemption? I must see last year's celebration to compare the two. She seems easily winded now.

It's not perfect, but there's glimmers of the old Mariah coming through.

Last year was a non-performance, sparking rumors that she had completely lost it.

I think some of that is nervous energy.

I don't get the Frank Ocean hype. I also hate when artist try to act so self important. It's nauseating

She was fine. People like Frank Ocean have no idea how to perform in front of an audience and they are never going to learn by sitting down and bitching. Go out on the road and learn how to perform. Frank thinks he can coast off of being the first openly gay black artist. What does that have to do with his untalented ass I will never know. eek

Vision Of Love was pretty bad, though I’ve sadly heard worse from her. After the missed cue, there were some pretty terrible notes happening. She rebounded a bit with Hero at least, but anything compared to last year’s disaster is crowning achievement. I do give her credit for having the balls to try again, especially in those temperatures. Her voice seems to be in better condition than it has been lately, but nowhere near vintage Mariah.

I have to agree with you. I will say that it was indeed bitter cold and that will make it difficult to stand out there and sing, but Mariah's voice is very average. Nothing she does interests me anymore. She's become a joke.

Vision of Love was the wrong song choice to start with. She's singing it in a lower octave and the vocal gymnastics are unfortunately absent. It's actually rather sad that MCs not the singer she used to be. I'm a long, long time Mariah fan since Vision of Love back in 1990 and back in the day she was arguably in the top 3 female vocalists of the time. Now I don't know if her voice is hoarse or if she has some issue(s) with her vocal chords. I know overtime some singers voices deteriorate so maybe it's beyond her control. Vision of Love without the Minnie Riperton style high trill isn't the same though.

Like Nippy before her, Mimi's vocal power has deteriorated a great deal. But, she sounds better than Nippy did during the last 10 years of her career. I think she gave a respectable performance the other night on the New Year's Eve show. But, definately not the same Mimi we heard in the early 90's.

I rarely detest or adore pop stars, but her diva attitude has been most offputting for almost her entire career. Unfortunately, she was still put out the same old entitled diva vibe the other night. I agree that her voice has deteriorated, but her attitude poisoned her music and performances long before her decline.

I agree.I used to like her,but lately she just comes across as so vain and self-absorbed.Her diva act is played out! She’s in love with herself.

I always have a feeling her diva act is not real, i think she is making fun of it.

Its part of her act.

I agree.

It's shtick. And it's funny.

Also on a sub-zero degree night the least they could've done was have her hot tea on stand-by.

According to legend I'm sure she asked for it beforehand.

But her diva demands are not an act, nor is her attitude. She may play it up at times for effect, but it is seems to be there all the time. If it has been a career long joke, the joke is on her as she has turned so many people off.
