Appreciation Thread: Michael Jackson’s “Another Part of Me”

Notable for its appearance in Disney’s 3D attraction Captain EO in 1986, “Another Part of Me” is a glistening vortex of synth-funk, jazz brass, and neon colors. The pulsing electronics, punchy horns, and slinky guitar licks are powerful enough to knock George Clinton’s Mothership out of orbit.

As a spiritual sequel to the Jacksons’ 1980 classic “Can You Feel It,” Michael’s belief in song and dance bringing peace and harmony to the universe is as heartwarming as the music itself. “We’re sending out a major love / And this is our message to you,” he sings with genuine soul and passion. “The planets are lining up, we’re bringing brighter days / They’re all in line waiting for you / Can’t you see? / You’re just another part of me!”

Interestingly, this floor-wrecking jam nearly lost its spot on Bad to the fan-favorite outtake “Streetwalker.” However, the legendary co-producer Quincy Jones made the right choice in convincing Jackson to keep it on the album as it skyrocketed to #1 and #11 on Billboard’s R&B and Pop charts, respectively.

Hey, thanks for reading my post! "We Are Here to Change the World" is the centerpiece of Captain EO dance sequence; however, "Another Part of Me" is briefly performed at the end. Here's the link: https://www.youtube.com/w...8k4k2J3Mjo

Both were in Caption EO. APOM was at the end, and was a different mix than what we know from BAD.

I saw EO at Disneyland in CA in 1989, and it was fantastic. Smoke came out from behind the screen, it was in 3D, it was loud and just brilliant all around at the time.

Captain EO is on YouTube.

I was totally that kid in 1989, few weeks shy of mj visiting disney world in orlando that month.....I experienced all that but upset that although I have a really great memory from my childhood, I don't remember any of that though it was there. I just remember everyone saying mj movie mj movie and I already knew who he was and had a thriller toy, etc. and could only recall the elephant in it for months until I got a VCR copy dubbed for me from a friend 20 years ago. But after that my love for cartoons with outer space themes in the 80's began and I think EO played a role in that without me even realizing haha though I know Star Wars was the real impact...just like mj to make an aesthetic respone to Star Wars too with the collaboration with George Lucas lol God I miss that man.

Been called crazy for being too emotional for his death, but I had an absent parent and being inspired by him musically and in following dreams unknowingly made him a surrogate for what my manchild father could not offer and losing him was like that clutch I turned him into and don't do anymore....gosh that convo was for my therapist, not you but yeah....haha I really really love the song APOM and especially the extended mix that is up a few pitches. So heavenly and my favourite song off Bad

So MJ's drug use doesn't bother you? That's odd as we all know he was using drugs to sleep and other drugs to stay awake.

So, I guess you don't believe the coroner's report. It specifically stated that there were no drugs in Michael's system other than the Propofol that Conrad Murray was using to put him to sleep. You people want so bad for Michael to have died from a drug overdose. Michael died because he trusted a HEART doctor, and that doctor didn't monitor him because of negligence. Therefore, Michael was murdered. Michael didn't take a drug and overdose . Stop trying to put his death in the same category as others who SELF medicated themselves and overdosed. Btw, all of this came out at the murderer, Conrad Murray's trial. This is not about wondering or guessing. Conrad Murray killed Michael Jackson. Bottomline, case closed.

Yes it did, MJ was out of it on painkillers most of the 2000s. But in 1987 when he did this song, he was almost as pure as a mountain stream. It was before people accused this beautiful soul of shit he never did. Also Prince chose to give himself a lethal dose of a dangerous painkiller, Michael was murdered by his Doctor Feelgood who gave him a lethal dose of Propofol.

Hold the phone. I agree with what you said here, except the part about Prince; his death is still an open homicide investigation and his death was ruled "accidental". Please don't do this; there is enough fake news out there already as it is.

I'm glad you halted that. Adorecream - MJ didn't die from a lethal dose of that. I mean, he did but he didn't.

An anesthetic arrests the respiratory system leaving the patient unable to breathe on their own naturally. The natural reflex of inhaling and exhaling are neutralized. It's why a patient is on a breathing device during surgery. The anesthesiologist isn't just monitoring how much is going in you, but to be sure you're getting oxygen by artificial means until you can breathe on your own again. It's lethal if it's not monitored, which is what Conrad "Kill MJ" Murray did - he simply wasn't monitoring MJ. Granted, he should have never given MJ that anyway because it doesn't even induce sleep or REM sleep. You're simply unconscious. But MJ was in denial about how it worked, despite being told over and over, and demanded to get his "milk" to sleep. I think it was just MJ being a drug addict. To me, it's no different than Betty Ford sucking down rubbing alcohol at her lowest point. MJ had a lot of low points with drug use and chemicals.

Nothing. Just another pathetic loser trying to take a cheap shot at Michael. Nevermind that it's not entirely the truth, but whatever.

Yeah. Another part of me. My first favourite MJ song. I first heard that song in July '88, when we were on holiday in the USA and I saw Captain Eo at Walt Disney World in Florida. I walked into that movie, not being a fan and walked out being one, even though it took some weeks admitting it to myself, as I didn't really think that much of him before that ( though that was mostly based on being misinformed). Not my favourite song anymore, as I kinda listened to it to death, but I still love it.

There is a story Q told about them sitting down and listening to "Another Part of Me" and "Streetwalker" to decide which one should go on BAD. He laughed about chubby Frank Dileo moving his fat little ass around during APOM, and that's what cemented its inclusion on the record.

While APOM's groove is solid, I still think "Streetwalker" is funkier and would have been beefier on the record. It should have at least been a b-side somewhere. It finally showed up in the 2001 reissue of BAD.

Another note about the album, and I may have made this point in another thread: The original vinyl pressing of BAD is vastly different than subsequent pressings. It's hard to find because they're not specially marked or labeled differently. Many songs were switched out over time. Remix edits of the title track, "Dirty Diana" were replaced. As an example, the horns in the "Bad" chorus, are missing except the very last go around with it just before it fades out. "The Way You Make Me Feel" was reworked with more thump and bottom to it. "I Just Can't Stop Loving You"'s spoken intro was removed and, subsequently, only restored on a special 45 released just a few years ago. The other songs from the album were replaced or changed on the album release as well.

I searched for a few years and finally found an original pressing. (The UPC codes are the same on all releases so it takes literally listening to it.) The horns in "Bad" were there throughout, TWYMMF sounds 'lighter', etc etc. I knew I'd found an original and snapped it up. I prefer it to the latter pressings.

Yes, and Conrad Murray said that MJ was using Propofol before he came into the picture. People told MJ not to be using it, and he did anyway. He was self-medicating and shut people out who cared about him; not good. Conrad was wrong for ever giving MJ Propofol. A good person would have said NO, and walked away, and got MJ into treatment.

You're correct on all counts.

I totally agree with you about MJ being a fucking asshole. It's hard to think of someone like him that way, but I think the same about Prince. They're not assholes, of course. Their behavior was shittastic when it came to drugs or addiction. It's that way with an addict. I think the thing that just makes me angry about it all is that they were both superhuman talent-wise, but died in just a goddamn pedestrian way. Oh look - rock star dead on drugs. Shocker! I suppose the alternative is that Prince would have gotten dementia and ended up babbling on like Dick Gregory or something.

.

MJ was tired and he was in pain, and I think a lot of his drug abuse was due to his emotional issues he had from childhood. I don't think he had the right people in his life to really care about him and help him. He was used and abused and that is all very sad and tragic because MJ was one of the most beautiful human being to ever walk this earth. I think he used pills to take the edge off, and a glass of wine or two, pretty soon....it's propofol to help him sleep, because nothing else seemed to work. Just all very sad.......

.

Prince had physical pain from his years of performing and it caught up with him. He had too many enablers around him and he was trying to manage his pain by himself; not a good combination.

.

I love them both and miss them both.
