OHIO Funk's Best

In the 70s's, the state of Ohio brought the world the likes of Junie Morrison, Bootsy Collins, Steve Arrington and Roger Troutman. I think these 4 guys were some of the most influential musicians on the funk scene in the 70s and goin into the 80s, yet were all from around the same area. Bootsy and Roger get the most credit from the masses (Roger more so in the Hip-Hop community.) But Junie was just as important, and Sttevie get's madly underrated in that area.

While Bootsy was with the James Brown Revue first (and later on P-Funk), Junie was out and in front with the Ohio Players. Steve Arrington and Roger Troutman were around soaking the game up from the veterans.

James Brown may be from the south, but the creator of FUNK was at Cincinnati's King studios since the mid 50s' pumping out tunes. The Isley Bros and The O'Jays also hail from Ohio. Bands like Slave, Heatwave, Lakeside, Dayton, Zapp and Sun are all from Ohio. The Funk is strong in that midwest state. It is probably the most non-talked about area for R&B/Soul/Funk music. Surrounding areas like Chicago, Detroit, Philly, Minneapolis or south like Memphis get all the love.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Hope he's not done touring; saw him in 2015 and it was a great show. Really tight band.

One of my great regrets is never having experienced Slave live during the heyday. These cats were young and full of fiyah. Another underrated band out of that scene is the group Dayton.
