Reissue Talk #31

For the very first time you can now get your hands on a Definitive Collection of the Funk sensation that was The Ohio Players.

Robinsongs are proud to be the first label to combine the Capitol, Westbound, Mercury, Arista & Boardwalk repertoire to make this unique compilation, but we did not stop there, we have also included material from Band members: Junie Morrison, Sugarfoot & Shadow (Billy Beck, Clarence Willis & Diamond) to give you a total career overview of this exceptional Funk Band.

This package also includes a 28-page colour booklet, that includes an essay by Christian John Wikane a New York based music journalist, with contributions by the band’s drummer and architect of the Ohio Players beat James “Diamond” Williams.

Robinsongs have divided the package in three parts “The Early Years”, “The Golden Years” & “The Later & Solo Years”, the early years kicks the package off with two tracks from the Capitol Records album “The Observations In Time” where we can see the direction that the Band is heading, onto Westbound where the Band recorded their breakthrough single ‘Funky Worm’, a R&B #1 which featured Junie as the voice of Granny, other standout Westbound tracks are ‘Pleasure’, ‘Pain’ & ‘Ecstasy’, DISC ONE finishes with two cuts from their first Mercury album “Skin Tight” including the hit ‘Jive Turkey’.

DISC TWO kicks off with arguably the band’s biggest hit ‘Fire’ which went to #1 in the R&B chart and the Album went to #1 in the Billboard album chart, three other #1 singles feature on this disc ‘Sweet Sticky Thing’, ‘Love Rollercoaster’ and ‘Who’d She Coo’ which was also the Bands only UK chart single. Other stand out tracks on this disc are ‘I Want To Be Free’, ‘O-H-I-O’ and ‘Fopp’.

The final CD covers the transition to Arista & Boardwalk Records, and features the full-length version of ‘Everybody Up’ plus tracks by Junie – ‘Love Has Taken Me Over’, Shadow – ‘Born To Hustle’ and Sugarfoot’s 1985 cover of ‘Fire’. This truly is a Definitive Collection.

The first reissue for Andrew Ridgeley’s debut album ‘Son Of Albert’ that was originally released in 1990, four years after the break-up of Wham!.

This Special Expanded Edition includes the nine original album tracks from the vinyl release plus 7 related bonus tracks. This includes ‘Shake (Hardcore)’ that was featured on the CD version of the album.

Andrew Ridgeley as one half of the 80’s super group Wham! sold more than 28 million records worldwide between 1982 and 1986. After exploring other interests in Los Angeles and Monaco he returned to the UK to record his first solo album for CBS Records, working with A&R chief Muff Winwood. He joined forces with various talented session musicians and programmers including Gary Bromham whose role expanded to become co-producer on the album and he co-wrote five tracks on the album with Andrew Ridgeley. ‘Son Of Albert’ was released in May 1990. In the UK it received mixed reviews from a music press struggling to adapt to a post Wham! role for Andrew Ridgeley. It’s fair to say that it didn’t realise its intended potential and resulted in the artist choosing to withdraw from the front line music business to pursue other interests.

Son Of Albert produced two singles:

• SHAKE – This collection includes four versions – the album, Hardcore, Accapella and Extended mixes.

• RED DRESS – Is featured three times on this CD, the album version, 12” and an additional Extended Mix included. This track features backing vocals by George Michael.

Other bonus material includes two mixes of the Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers penned Hangin’, the Extended and Alternative Extended Versions taken from various 12” releases of ‘Shake’.

This Special Expanded Edition has been remastered using the original production master tapes.

The 24 page full colour booklet features an expanded design of the original artwork, a recent interview with Andrew Ridgeley and Gary Bromham reflecting on the making of the album, album lyrics and a UK Discography.

Tracklist
1. Red Dress
2. Shake
3. The Price Of Love
4. Flame
5. Hangin’
6. Mexico
7. Big Machine
8. Kiss Me
9. Baby Jane

Fleetwood Mac super deluxe edition

5.1 surround sound mix • unreleased outtakes • & more

Fleetwood Mac‘s 1975 eponymous album (that features the current line-up) will be reissued as a five-disc super deluxe edition in January next year.

The original album is newly remastered and features on CD and vinyl LP in the box set. The CD also includes the original single mixes of Over My Head, Rhiannon, Say You Love Me and Blue Letter.

Presented in an 11 x 11 hardbound book, the set also features rare and unseen photos from the era, a replica tour book, and an 11 x 22 poster. The collection will be available on November 24. Exclusive bundles are also available for pre-order in the official Eagles Online Store, including the album, T-Shirt and keychain.

HOTEL CALIFORNIA: 40TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION opens with a newly remastered version of the original album, featuring two Billboard #1 singles — “New Kid In Town” and the title track — plus the smash hit “Life In the Fast Lane.” The album was nominated for five GRAMMY® Awards, and won for “Record of the Year” and “Best Arrangement For Voices.”

The set also marks the debut of ten live tracks that were recorded during the band’s three-night stand at the Los Angeles Forum in October 1976. The concert recordings — which were recorded about a month before the album came out — feature one of the first ever live performances of “Hotel California” and “New Kid In Town” along with other Eagles classics including “Already Gone,” “Take It To the Limit,” and “Witchy Woman.”

The Blu-ray Audio disc that accompanies HOTEL CALIFORNIA: 40TH ANNIVERSARY DELUXE EDITION features the 5.1 Surround Sound mix originally released on DVD-A in 2001 along with a hi-resolution, 192 KHz/24-Bit stereo mix.

I listened to this over the weekend. IMO, the "remastered" original album doesn't sound much better than the original Japan issued CD. I really enjoyed the second disc, though.

Following on from the success of Robinsongs’ Bar-Kays 2 on 1 “Light Of Life” and “Injoy”, Robinsongs now bring you a 4 on 2 package “As One”, “Nightcruising”, “Propositions” and “Dangerous”.

These four albums were released in the early 80s, and the album “Nightcruising” was to be their third Gold album, all four albums made the Top 10 in the Billboard Soul & R&B Album chart.

Debby Boone - You Light Up My Life 40th Anniversary Expanded Edition
release: December 8, 2017

This seminal soft-rock LP reached #6 on the strength of that title smash, which set a record by claiming the #1 spot for 10 weeks. Debby Boone’s You Light Up My Life platinum-selling original album has never been reissued in any form, physical or digital. That a #6 charting album from 1977, one with an iconic song that went to #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 pop singles chart as well as Top 10 Country and stayed there for a record-setting ten weeks, has been unavailable for decades is almost inconceivable when even the most obscure albums have been reissued on CD and everything seems to be available online even if you can’t find a physical copy.

But no, it really is true…and now, with Debby’s help, Real Gone Music is going to make up for lost time in the 40th anniversary of its original release. Included is the original album remastered digitally (by Ted Carfrae) for the first time ever, featuring the #1 hit “You Light Up My Life” as well as the Adult Contemporary hits “Baby I’m Yours,” “When the Lovelight Starts Shining Through His Eyes” and “Hasta Manana” (the latter two performed by Debby with her sisters).

For this Deluxe Expanded CD Edition, they've added no less than 13 bonus tracks: non-LP rarities like “He’s a Rebel,” the B-side to “You Light Up My Life,” a pair of collectible Motown singles by The Boone Girls and six unreleased recordings featuring charming remakes of classic ‘60s pop favorites from “You Don’t Own Me” to “Popsicles and Icicles”.

“You Light Up My Life” is one of the most popular recordings in modern music history and remains in the Top 10 of Billboard’s most successful singles of the past 60 years. It won both the Oscar and Grammy Awards in 1978 for Best Song and the American Music Award for Best Pop Single.

In addition to earning a Best New Artist Grammy in 1978, Debby was also nominated for Best Pop Vocal – Female and Record of The Year, was named the Top New Female Artist the same year by both the Academy of Country Music’s and Music City News. She has subsequently won another pair of Grammys for her contemporary Christian recordings in addition to two Dove Awards and numerous Record World honors.

You Light Up My Light launched Debby’s solo career and solidified her multi-generational appeal with dozens of television appearances including her own specials and frequent guest spots on variety and talk shows ranging from The Midnight Special and Solid Gold to The Tonight Show and Oprah.

The granddaughter of country music pioneer Red Foley, Debby has enjoyed a string of hit songs on the country charts beginning with “You Light Up My Life” and continuing with the #1 “Are You On The Road To Lovin’ Me Again” and others.

The daughter of crooner Pat Boone and the daughter-in-law of songstress Rosemary Clooney, Debby Boone has devoted her most recent musical endeavors to the Great American Songbook while also continuing her work in musical theatre.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Wendy & Lisa: Eroica: Expanded Edition (Cherry Pop)

Wendy & Lisa
Eroica: Expanded Edition
Cherry Pop

Guitarist Wendy Melvoin and keyboardist Lisa Coleman came to prominence as members of Prince & The Revolution, and there’s no doubt of their creative influence on the purple one; they fleshed out his sound and vision on some of his greatest recordings. As that band wound down, they embarked on their own recording project, Wendy & Lisa, establishing themselves not only as the double-headed creative force within the band, but also as a crack go-to recording and production team. Their self-titled debut appeared in 1987, and Fruit On The Bottom appeared in 1989, and though they weren’t commercially acclaimed, they were warmly received.

Their third album, Eroica, appeared in 1990 and found them with a new record label, a sophisticated collection of songs. Though the shadow of their previous work inevitably looms—it’s not hard to imagine “Rainbow Lake” being a part of Graffiti Bridge had circumstances been different—for the most part Eroica finds them creating a satisfying groove that’s all their own. Pop and funk was their specialty, and they offer up some great jams, such as the dance-floor groove of “Strung Out,” the slinky funk of “Cracking Me Up,” and the perky “Turn Me Inside Out.” But Eroicasatisfies when they escape those expectations and sonically explore; “Valley Vista” is a folky, upbeat roots-rocker that comes near the end of the album, a jaunty acoustic sing-along number, while “Porch Swing” is an unhurried little number with a quiet little funk groove and a lackadaisical attitude that befits sitting on a porch with nothing else on your mind but killing a little time, and “Mother of Pearl” and “Why Wait For Heaven: are heavy rock numbers that predate “grunge” by about a year.

The bonus disc of material in this reissue, however, offers up several wonderful obscurities, and shows that Eroica was borne out of a very creative time. B-sides “Stones & Birth” and “Balance” are as strong as anything found on the album—left off in the interest of space, and not as a reflection of their quality, and while remixes are often a mixed bag, the various takes on “Strung Out” and “Rainbow Lake” offer variations of a theme that are compelling and surprisingly don’t sound dated. But it’s the inclusion of four songs of instrumental piano numbers, taken from a limited edition EP included in the first pressing of the album, which really illustrates Wendy Melvoin’s talents as a pianist. “Minneapolis #1” and “Minneapolis #2” are two sketches of a melody that are quite beautiful, while “Eric’s Ghost” and “C-Ya” are moody and introspective. If anything, they’re a reminder of just how integral a role she played in the music of The Revolution, as they recall some of the more tender moments of that group, most notably the haunting “Sometimes It Snows In April.”

Sadly, Wendy & Lisa’s new label dropped the ball on Eroica, as it came and went in a rather low-key fashion. As a recording partnership, they would start work on a fourth album with Trevor Horn, but it would go unreleased; they would form a short-lived new project, Girl Bros, releasing a sole album in 1998. The duo would soon focus on other musical activities, reuniting a few years back and releasing a fine comeback album, White Flags of Winter Chimneys. More recently, they reunited The Revolution, a touring act which pays tribute to their fallen leader, while retaining the energy and intensity of Prince’s live act. This timely reissue of Eroica reminds the listener of just how amazing and talented these two ladies are, and it’s good to hear it again.
