Hear U2's Exuberant New Song Featuring Kendrick Lamar

.

U2 recruited Kendrick Lamar for a spoken word cameo on their exuberant new song "Get Out of Your Own Way," the latest preview of their upcoming 14th LP, Songs of Experience.
.

The track opens with Bono crooning over a quiet electronic pulse and bass before building to an arena-size chorus that recalls the melodic surge of their 2000 hit "Beautiful Day." Bono chronicles an ambiguous eternal struggle on the track, belting, "I could sing it to ya all night, all night/ If I could, I'd make it alright/ Nothing's stopping you except what's inside/ I can help you, but it's your fight, your fight."

.

Lamar, who previously recruited U2 for a cameo on his DAMN. track "XXX.," appears in the song's final section, delivering a brief monologue over the Edge's rippling guitar.

I guess some of the same people that still listen to Prince. You know, like when you want to hear real music.

I do and apparently millions more. Perhaps the "sellout" comment is a description of all of their concerts across the globe.

It's funny cause listening to this track the last few days he is not even billed and it sounds like Bono rapping at one point. I don't view this as "selling out" I mean please this band is 40 years in the business and its not like this is going to get them some NEW fucking U2 fans, please can we stop this stupid BS everytime someone "older" does something with someone younger, plus hasnt U2 been the one that always did that strange thing you didnt expect, and when they didnt do that "thing" everyone is like "oh they are playing it safe" everyone needs to get a life already.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Despite Bono's continuing disappearance up his own orifice, I still love U2's catalogue up to the mid-90s ... best band on the planet bar none for a few years there.

But lately it feels like U2 are a band doing an impression of themselves. They're becoming like Bon Jovi, their last couple of albums all sound the same and have little impact.

I could look past Bono being a "YOU must save the world" douche all the while avoiding tax payments in Ireland and having his hat flown round the world on its own seat, if the music was still good ... but sadly it ain't ...

Have to disagree also big "lump in " there with Bon Jovi, nothing like what has gone on in that band. On the BJ front there is one guy running 100% of it, I mean everything and it has been that way since Jon Fired management in 1991, the band while he may say are family they are "hired hands" so there is a huge difference, in Jovi you literally have NO ONE contributing anything, David Bryan gets a few things through but that is it, and this is not knocking Jon he just wants the blame and fault to live and die with him. For u2 they all contribute and The Edge is usually the reason for the records delayed not BONO, because he and the others are in the mixing process and overall sound of the records. As for the whole 90's heydey I always find this amusing that era is the one some jump on considering that era was the era where U2 borrowed almost everything from INXS, as INXS sales dropped in the states their records were actually stronger than ever, and the real "ACHTUNG BABY" can be found listening to "Welcome to Whereever you are" by INXS and despite the year difference in releases INXS recorded most prior to Achtung being done, in fact multiple members of INXS said to Michael Hutchence, "Stop fucking hanging around Bono so much" . But to say they have done nothing good in the last two decades is BS sorry, because a lot of what came after POP was 100 times better than what was before.

U2 always write good songs and give great performances on record, but as DaveT said (above), the magic of their thing kind of dissipated after the mid-90s.

In retrospect, their peak was c.1982 (recorded most of War) through 1993 (recorded/released Zooropa while touring ZooTV). Nothing they've recorded or done since then is really of any importance to the rock culture or their own legacy, though they've gotten really good at making money from corporate sponsorship (something they shunned prior to 1997).

Not that they've sucked since then -- they're still really good writers -- but I liked them better as inspired amateurs with talent. In latter years, they've become craftsmen.

I read a book about Bon Jovi recently and it mentioned that since the beginning, Jon was the only one signed to the record labels. I think a few of the songs on the Bon Jovi debut album were recorded before a band was formed. None of the others, including Sambora, has ever been signed to Mercury as a member of Bon Jovi. Richie & David later got deals to release solo records. The book also said that Jon never replaced Alec Jon Such in the band with an official bassist because he wanted the group to have the same lineup although Hugh McDonald has been the bassist since Alec. I guess it's like Duran Duran has had Dom Brown as guitarist ever since Andy Taylor left the 2nd time, but has never made him an official member. Dom has been with Duran Duran longer than Sterling Campbell, who was made an official member.

Jon had "RUNAWAY" done and no band, he was sweeping up at the Power Plant and somehow the tape got into hands and then got airplay as part of a compilation for NYC radio station. It caught on and then he needed a band, David was a childhood friend and then so on and so on. As for HUGH i do believe now he has been included as a member officially, right now the bread and butter of this band as with most are touring and Jon is having voice issues big time, not sure what will happen, I think if they get into the RNR hall of fame they will go out and do a farewell with Richie and Alec but dont quote me.

Yeah, probably a bit of a generalisation there ... I just meant in the way the last few Bon Jovi albums all sound alike and aren't particularly memorable. I've had a similar feeling listening to the last couple of U2 releases.

These bands are always at their best when they are on the up, still hungry, still p*ssed off with the world a bit. I don't think fame, money and a comfy life sits well with what a rock band should be doing, shaking people's worlds.
