Jack White's Third Man Records Announces Chess Records Reissues
9/15/2017 by Bryan Rolli Billboard

Jack White has long owed a debt to classic blues artists and now his label, Third Man Records, has announced series of reissues that will celebrate the Chess Records catalog.

Third Man partnered with Universal Music Group for the releases, their first of which includes three 7” vinyl singles from Muddy Waters: “Manish Boy” b/w “Young Fashioned Ways,” “She’s All Right” b/w “Sad, Sad Day” and “Rollin’ Stone” b/w “Walking Blues.”

White’s label plans to reissue more iconic releases in the coming months, including Waters’ 1968 album Electric Mud, Pitchfork reports. They’ll have no shortage of source material, as Chess Records was home to several pioneering blues and rock artists, including Howlin’ Wolf, Willie Dixon and Chuck Berry.

The first reissued Waters singles are available at Third Man’s store now.

Description
A special box set of Queen's landmark 1977 album News of the World is here, marking the 40th anniversary of the original release.

The new package includes the original album on CD, plus two further CDs of recently unearthed out-takes and rarities from the band's archives, one of which is a newly created ‘alternative’ version of the whole album – Raw Sessions.

For many Queen devotees, this Raw Sessions CD will be the most intriguing component of the new release. Mined deep from long-vaulted studio multi-track tapes, this extraordinary parallel album brings to light never-before-heard alternative versions of each of the album’s 11 tracks. Every lead vocal is different, as are most of the lead guitar parts and a great many other instrumental details. Here we experience We Are The Champions anew, with many unfamiliar vocal and instrumental elements, and for the first time at its full-recorded length rather than the edited 1977 album cut. Here also is the chance to discover peak era Freddie Mercury vocals on a track that nobody outside Queen’s inner circle has heard him sing before at all – Brian May’s All Dead, All Dead. The original album version features May himself on vocals. Roger Taylor’s Sheer Heart Attack can be heard with its original long-lost guitar intro and uncut ending. Taylor’s other song, Fight From The Inside, is more remarkable in that we hear his demo vocal worked on in his home studio in preparation for the next sessions.

Another outstanding feature of this weighty 40th anniversary box is a pure analogue re-cut of the original vinyl LP, direct from the unmastered analogue master mix tapes. There is also a rich selection of NOTW related memorabilia including three posters and a 60-page book of images, mostly previously unseen.

The package is completed with a brand new one-hour DVD documentary, Queen : The American Dream, created from backstage material filmed during Queen’s 1977 USA News of the World tour.

Description
As part of its acclaimed anthology series, SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “Deliver The Love – The Anthology,” – a sumptuous 2-CD homage to the late legendary vocalist, Phyllis Hyman who continues to enjoy a faithful and loyal following among discerning music lovers the world over.

“Deliver The Love” focuses on the Pittsburgh-born entertainer’s years with Buddah Records and Arista Records; in addition to all her charted tracks released between 1976-1985 (including ‘You Know How To Love Me’, ‘Somewhere In My Lifetime’ and ‘Betcha By Golly Wow’), this compilation (lovingly produced by SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan, who began interviewing Phyllis in 1977 and maintained his association with her until 1995, the year of her passing) contains a plethora of guest appearances with other musical giants including Norman Connors, Grover Washington Jr., Pharaoh Sanders, McCoy Tyner and Barry Manilow.

• The soulful singer’s duets with Michael Henderson – ‘Can’t We Fall In Love Again’ and ‘We Both Need Each Other’ – are included along with 12” single versions of ‘Kiss You All Over’, the stunning Thom Bell-Linda Creed composition, ‘Loving You, Losing You’ and ‘Living Inside Your Love’. Other highlights include the Bell-produced ‘Magic Mona’, the underrated ‘Just Imagine…’ (from the Norman Connors’ album, “You Are My Starship”) and the timeless standard, ‘In A Sentimental Mood’, from the Broadway musical “Duke Ellington’s Sophisticated Ladies” which garnered Phyllis a Tony nomination in 1981. In addition, four obscure tracks that remained unreleased until issued on UK compilations in the last ten years are also included along with much-loved gems from the Hyman recorded legacy such as ‘I Don’t Want To Lose You’, her self-penned ‘Gonna Make Changes’, ‘No One Can Love You More’ and ‘Be Careful (How You Treat My Love)’.

Stellar liner notes by A. Maxayn - Reloaded: The Complete Recordings 1972-1974 (3CDs)
release: (UK) October 27, 2017, (USA) November 3, 2017

In just over a month, the Maxayn trilogy (Maxayn, Mindful, Bail Out For Fun!) is released by Cherry Red/Soul Music Records in a luxurious boxed package. This is the first ever reissue of the Maxayn albums, all of which have been unavailable for four decades except as previously-owned vinyl on eBay (and the prices are going up). For more information, including where to order, see my other Maxayn update. This is an artist-approved reissue, with the full participation of the one and only Maxayn Lewis.

Maxayn devotees have come to the group in a variety of ways. Some will have been fortunate enough to catch them in real time when they were recording. Perhaps among that group, there’s an even luckier sub-group who caught their wonderful 1973 appearance on Soul Train, performing ‘Check Out Your Mind’. Others may have become familiar with Maxayn Lewis via her work on other people’s albums in every decade from the 1960s onwards.

My route to Maxayn came by way of one of my favourite albums of all time – Mary McCreary’s Butterflies In Heaven. Mary McCreary (aka Mary Rand, Mary Russell) was a Shelter Records signing who had previously been part of Little Sister, working with Sly & The Family Stone. Mary was (and remains) an absolutely marvellous singer, pianist and songwriter. If you check out her debut album (1973), you’ll see that Maxayn sings on the penultimate track, ‘My Love Is Real’. Although I didn’t necessarily make much of it at the time, the name lodged in my mind; it’s not as if there are many Maxayns in the world. By the time I’d worked my way through Mary McCreary’s catalogue and reached the 1979 album Heart Of Fire (issued as Mary Russell), Maxayn’s name became impossible to ignore. On that album, she not only sings with Mary, but also co-writes some of the songs. It was only a matter of time before I used a search engine and realised the full extent of my ignorance – Maxayn’s musical accomplishments could fill a book. There’s her time as an Ikette, her many guest appearances on other artists’ albums, and – most importantly – her own music as part of the Maxayn group.

So, by the late 1990s, I was listening to Maxayn singing Maxayn. I found a still-sealed copy of the debut on eBay and a used copy of Mindful at Soul Brother in Putney (London). Eventually, the third album found its way to my ears. What a group, what a woman. Maxayn is one of the preeminent voices in soul, rock, funk and pop. She’s also a pianist, multi-instrumentalist and songwriter. With her vastly talented bandmates, Andre Lewis, Emry Thomas and Marlo Henderson, she helped create a new age in funk and soul. The Maxayn albums don’t sound like they could be by anyone else. Certainly, there are traces of Sly & The Family Stone and other influences make themselves known here and there. But it all adds up to something no one else was doing in quite the same way.

So let’s welcome back the Maxayn albums with open arms. They’ve been absent for far too long. ~ Charles Donovan

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Elvis Presley Estate Preps Orchestral Christmas LP
By Ryan Reed September 14, 2017 Rolling Stone

Elvis Presley's estate will release another Christmas album featuring reimagined orchestral versions of the late singer's previously issued holiday tracks. Elvis Presley - Christmas with Elvis and The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra is out October 6th via RCA Records and Legacy Recordings.

The LP includes Presley performances from 1957's Elvis' Christmas Album and 1971's Elvis Sings the Wonderful World of Christmas, paired with newly tracked arrangements from London's famed Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

The new yuletide set is the third in a series with the Philharmonic, following 2015's platinum-selling If I Can Dream: Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and 2016's The Wonder of You: Elvis Presley With the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Co-producers Nick Patrick and Don Reedman recorded Christmas With Elvis at Abbey Road Studios 2.

The standard, 13-track release is out in CD, LP and digital formats on October 6th, with an expanded deluxe version with four bonus tracks – symphonic takes from Presley's 1957 EP, Peace in the Valley – following in CD and digital form on November 24th.

Priscilla Presley, Presley's widow and the album's executive producer, explains in the liner notes that she assembled the track list to reflect her father's taste in holiday tunes. "The songs chosen were songs that Elvis was particularly fond of, and it seemed quite fitting to have the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra once again accompanying him at this very special time of year," she said. "I'm positive he would be smiling if this opportunity came up in his lifetime and that this album would definitely be in the making."

Willie Nelson Teatro - The Complete Sessions (CD/DVD)
Available: October 27th, 2017

Location is everything. When Willie Nelson and album producer Daniel Lanois set out to create a cinematic-sounding album, Teatro, they took over a disused movie theatre in Oxnard, California, and pictured its dusty glory on the cover art. Recorded as-live in situ amid the red velvet seats, Teatro sees Nelson working extensively with his frequent collaborator Emmylou Harris, who joins him for duets and on backing vocals. The other major player is Daniel Lanois, who produces the album, plays guitar and bass, took the cover photo and wrote one of the album’s songs, “The Maker”, a stunning performance with glacier-thick vibe.

Reinvention is key on Teatro, with Nelson revisiting a number of songs he first wrote in the 1960s, including 1968’s “I Just Can’t Let You Say Goodbye” and 1962’s “I’ve Just Destroyed the World” and “Three Days”. Though the songs are familiar, the sounds aren’t: Teatro found Nelson experimenting with rhythms and flavors as never before, from the Spanish-influenced “Darkness On The Face Of The Earth” to the double-drum-kit percussive groove of “My Own Peculiar Way”.

Originally released by Island Record in 1998, Teatro is issued here for the first time as a double disc set, including the original album plus 7 unreleased bonus tracks from the sessions. Disc two is a complete live performance of the album, directed by Wim Wenders, filmed during the album recording sessions and available here for the first time on DVD.

Limited to 500 copies and only available to those that purchase ALL three limited colors of LITA 160, 161, 162 as part of the bundle.

The “Cowboy” moved slowly out of the booth and into the studio. You could tell by the look in his eyes, that the half-dozen shots of Chivas Regal had put his ego to rest, and he was ready to sing with the “Lady.” They Sang for three nights – the “Cowboy” and the “Lady”, and the Gods were kind, and their album was finished on time. Herein, lie the results…some good, some bad and some more. -Lee Hazlewood

“He had that wonderful, raw sense of humor and that good ol’ boy accent. He certainly could turn a phrase.” -Ann-Margret

In 1969 Lee Hazlewood’s personal record label LHI Records was flush with major label cash and Lee wanted to make Ann-Margret his next big star. In the quest for a hit, the pair recorded fuzzed out acid rock (“It’s A Nice World To Visit (But Not To Live In)” & “You Turned My Head Around,”) orchestral pop (“Sleep in the Grass” & “Chico”) and a genuine country album cut in Nashville.

Light in the Attic Records is proud to continue it’s Lee Hazlewood archival series with an expanded reissue of Lee & Ann-Margret’s The Cowboy & The Lady. The album is Hazlewood’s truest country album and a perfect example of the genre hopping he was afforded at LHI with unlimited creative freedom and money to burn. Recorded over a weekend in Nashville with the help of Charlie McCoy and some Nashville session musicians.

“That was 47 years and about 5000 sessions ago.” – Charlie McCoy

With improvised lines like “Look at her standing there with chili all over her dress / If I knew her better, I’d give her a puppy,” the sessions were loose and fun, with most tracks cut in one or two takes.

“I had done things in Nashville before. I worked with The Jordanaires in ’62 or ’63. We did a lot of things. I had worked with Charlie McCoy, Floyd Cramer, and Chet Atkins. I love the feeling of Nashville.” – Ann-Margret

A whirlwind year of lear jet promo tours, magazine photo shoots, television specials and cutting records for LHI wasn’t able to bring the success that Lee and Ann-Margret pushed for. A second LHI album with Ann-Margret was planned but never recorded. Within a year of making the trip to Nashville, Lee would be living in Sweden full-time and Ann-Margret would focus on her acting career for the better part of a decade. Nothing exemplifies Lee’s “throw it against the wall and see if it sticks” record production of the LHI era like his work with Ann-Margret. Though it didn’t stick, and it didn’t sell, Lee’s adventure with Ann-Margret is an extravagant tangent that has since grown a cult following…

Eagles / Hotel California 40th anniversary super deluxe edition box

Box set with 5.1 surround blu-ray • unreleased live tracks • remastered

Late next month Warner Music will issue a 40th anniversary super deluxe edition of the Eagles‘ fifth studio album, Hotel California.

The package will be a three disc set consisting of a remastered version of the original album, a live disc with 10 previously unreleased live tracks (from the 20-22 October ’76 gigs at the Los Angeles Forum) and a blu-ray audio with hi-res stereo and 5.1 mixes of the album.

The box set is not dissimilar to the Led Zeppelin super deluxe editions (although no vinyl) and comes in a ‘Solander’ box. As well as the audio/video content described, will include a 44-page hardcover book, a 24-page replica tour book (11″ x 11″) and three posters (11″ x 22″): Norman Seef photograph, Pete Frame ‘Family Tree’ and Tour Poster).

A two-CD deluxe edition pairs the remastered album with the live CD and, for what it’s worth, there’s also a one CD remaster.

Hotel California 40th anniversary reissues will be released on 24 November 2017.

This looks like an amazing set and yes,I'm buying it biggrin but I have to wonder...why doesn't it include more rare stuff on the second CD? Instead of those four pointless remixes, why not include demo versions, outtakes, and the few songs that were in the movie but not included on the soundtrack?

Most of these songs had been prevously released on other albums. They weren't exclusive to the soundtrack. So if any demos exist, the original record labels and/or artists would have them.

They also could have included the rare extended versions of “Staying Alive”,”Night Fever” and “More Thsn A Wonan” which appeared on a promo-only album in 1978.

to be clear...when I mentioned outtakes,I was referring to the Bee Gees’ material that was produced for the movie...example: an early demo of “How Deep Is Your Love”...

ELO ‘Out Of The Blue’ To Be Released On Picture Disc For First Time

Celebrating the 40th Anniversary of ELO’s Out of the Blue, Legacy Recordings to Release First-Ever Picture Disc Edition of Classic Double Album

Available Friday, November 24

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of ELO’s top-selling double album, Out of the Blue, Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release the first-time-ever picture disc edition of the ELO classic available everywhere on Friday, November 24.

This 2LP collector’s picture disc edition of Out of the Blue was remastered from the original master tapes and includes a digital download of the album.

Out of the Blue is available for pre-order now here: https://LegacyRecordings.lnk.to/Outoftheblue/lang/us

ELO was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame on April 7, 2017.

One of the indisputable masterpieces–and most commercially successful titles–in the ELO canon, Out of the Blue, the group’s seventh studio album, was originally released in October 1977. The musical and conceptual brainchild of Jeff Lynne, who wrote and produced the entire album, Out of the Blue is among the most ambitious double albums in classic rock history, a complex and visionary work that included, as the album’s complete Side 3, Lynne’s “Concerto for a Rainy Day,” a coherent song suite comprised of four movements and authentic ambient weather effects recorded by Lynne and incorporated into the soundscape of the record.

Out of the Blue was the first ELO album to feature the group’s logo as a three-dimensional flying saucer/space station, a visual motif central to ELO’s live shows. The album, which peaked at #4 on the Billboard 200 has gone on to sell upwards of 10 million copies worldwide. Out of the Blue is the first double album in UK chart history to spawn four Top 20 singles.

“Forty years on, I would never have imagined that this music would take on a life of its own,” says Lynne.

Formed in Birmingham, England in 1970, ELO was designed to create progressive modern pop music combining classical and rock elements. Lynne has consistently been ELO’s guiding light and driving force, writing virtually all of the group’s original material while producing the albums.

From 1972 through 1986, the golden era of recording and touring, ELO racked up more combined UK and US Top 40 hits than any other band on the planet while selling more than 50 million records worldwide. During the same period, ELO scored twenty Top 20s on the UK Singles Chart and fifteen Top 20s on the US Billboard Hot 100.

More recently, recording and touring as Jeff Lynne’s ELO, saw the 2015 release of the critically acclaimed album Alone In The Universe on Columbia Records, the first album of all-new music released by the band in over a decade. The band also just played a sold-out Wembley Stadium show in London on June 24th.
