Justin Timberlake finalizing terms to perform at Superbowl 52

"Justin Timberlake is "finalizing" terms to perform at the halftime show at Super Bowl 52 on Feb. 4, Us Weekly reported.
The 10-time Grammy winner reportedly was looking to collaborate with Jay-Z during the show, but at the moment "it will just be Justin — no surprise performers.”

Jay-Z was in talks earlier this month to do the halftime show, but no deal was reached.
Timberlake's return to the halftime show comes 13 years after his last performance, during which singer Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction," exposing her breast, happened on live TV.
The controversy resulted in the Federal Communications Commission to implement a five-second broadcast delay during the halftime show."

He probably won't be alone but if he is, this will be a weak halftime show in just about every way.

He isn't the worst choice but they really couldn't find anyone else?

I hope he does his new cover of A Change Is Gonna Come, then maybe SexyBack and like an Nysnc reunion. You know, a great inconsistent American shitshow. He needs male rappers and Joey Fatone and like no women on stage OR maybe Janet in one of those full body suits she is all about these days via satellite.

He better have a new song coming out or something by that time, no reason for him to do the show with no new album etc whatsoever

Above all else, he's a polished entertainer that knows how to fill time.

He'll have some help.

You're not really looking for someone with an edge, just a name.

I'd have gone with Bruno Mars. He's really talented onstage.

He's the best live performer of this generation. No competition. And I say this cause I've seen him twice this year and the guy is a phenomenally gifted vocalist and dancer. I've seen Janelle once and she was also phenomenal, sadly her catalog isn't mainstream otherwise she'd be considered to do the gig.

However, two years ago, I had this scenario in my head where OutKast have this MAJOR comeback to music with this INSTANT CLASSIC album and tour, and they get to headline the Halftime show and invite Southern hip hop veterans or even Janelle since she's been associated with them early in her career. You know they put on a damn energetic show.

OutKast tapped out at their commercial peak.

Oh, what would have been.

I'm really unhappy with this choice. He is responsible for exposing Janet's breast to the world. I know it wasn't intentional, but he apologised late and didn't speak up against the injustice Janet faced while his career was unaffected by the wardrobe malfunction.

Bruno is one of my favorite modern day artists but he doesn't need to perform at another Super Bowl (at least not so soon). He's already performed twice in just 2 years.

The fact that happened is indicative of just how few names there are left to put on a stadium performance. Soon we'll be having the likes of Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber headlining.

It's a good choice. He's a 'safe' act. However, he has performed at the Super Bowl twice already.

What would be rich, and I was just talking about this to a friend today, is if Janet showed up. The NFL has enough controversy so why not go out with a bang.

Dude puts on a good show and employs tons of Black musicians and dancers. Even if his intentions
for doing so are misguided, Black musicians eat because of Justin Timberlake and others like him
who are beloved by the media whilst loving and using Black American art forms.

I said "others like him" yet I can't think of any other current white pop singer whose band and
background dancers are mostly Black Americans . . . maybe Justin Bieber?

It would definitely be cool to see Janet Jackson. I hope he does have the grace to ask her to per-
form and that the TV network hosting this year's SB will allow it.

Interesting viewpoint hmmm

Justin Timberlake: #neverforget… but they do https://www.laineygossip....bowl/48042

I told you. You might want to leave because this post will involve a lot of “I told you”. I told you, way back in February, when Justin Timberlake appeared in an ad during the Super Bowl, that this would happen. That it was only a matter of time, a “matter of time before he gets invited to be the halftime performer. #NeverForget” Oh but they do. Or maybe it’s not about forgetting. Maybe, in JT’s case, there was nothing to forget. Because it’s not like he’s ever been treated like he did anything wrong. All the blame went to someone else.

But I told you. Just last month I told you again – about the rumours that Jay-Z and JT had been invited to co-headline the Super Bowl. Those rumours got extra loud yesterday as it’s been reported that JT’s in final negotiations, on his own, without Jay-Z, to perform at the Super Bowl. According to Variety, Jay backed out and now it’s only Justin who’s still trying to make this happen. The timing works for him because he supposedly has a new album coming out early in 2018. Oh and, you know, everyone’s picturing him closing the set to that stupid f-cking Trolls song which makes the pearl-clutchers happy because we can count on Justin Timberlake to give us “family entertainment”. After all, there was only one person on stage 14 years ago. A woman. A woman who ripped open her own jacket to reveal her nipple. Justin Timberlake removed himself from the situation. He left her for dead. That’s why they’ve forgotten. That’s why we’re here now. Because all this time, he let her eat all that sh-t by herself. Because we hold men and women to different standards. Because we hold white men and black women to different standards.

For those of us who will #NeverForget though, maybe what we should do is keep reminding them. Here’s what happened at Super Bowl XXXVIII in Houston: Janet Jackson was the headliner. Justin Timberlake was her guest. And they were performing HIS song. It was HIS SONG! Rock Your Body. At the last line, “Bet I have you naked by the end of this song”, is when HE reached over and HE pulled the plate off her chest, exposing her breast.

HIS SONG! HE WAS SINGING! HIS LINE!

And people freaked out. So it was Justin who took cover. Who slunk away, the f-cking weasel he is. Janet was forced to apologise publicly on television – BY HERSELF. Then they cancelled her at the Grammys. You know who they didn’t cancel? Justin Timberlake performed at the Grammys a week later and won two awards. He’s kept rising since then. Meanwhile Janet? Well, as you know, her career was permanently altered, permanently damaged. Because she was banned. She was blacklisted industry-wide. For a more thorough recap of the situation, and Justin’s repeated refusal to step up and share the responsibility for what happened, including several examples of his cowardice in the days – and years! – following the incident, revisit Gawker’s post about what was expected of Janet after Nipplegate and how Justin Timberlake ACTUALLY BENEFITTED FROM IT.

The fact that he’s welcome at the Super Bowl? That they want him to perform at the Super Bowl? It only confirms what we’ve already known. That men like Justin Timberlake, who use and discard women without compunction, will not only be OK, they will always be rewarded. This time with a prime spot on the most highly rated program of the year, the most-watched night of television of the year. Probably without much of a complaint. I mean, you and I, we might be bitching about it for the next 6 months. But what are the chances that this bothers people as much as it should?

Especially since there are already some who think that he might bring Janet back, as Variety notes that “one major TV music executive even insists a buzzworthy reunion with Jackson can’t be completely ruled out, though that seems far-fetched”. And…what? This is supposed to be gracious? Like after all these years, if it really goes down like that, we’re supposed to be impressed by Justin’s magnanimity? IT’S STILL GOING TO BE ABOUT HIM!

No matter how you shake it out, no matter what happens, it’s never not going to be about him. Always him. ME ME ME ME ME ME ME. HE will get the credit. On HIS stage.

Any “forgiveness” then that Janet might receive would be at HIS request, by HIS doing – which is only an advantage for HIM. And the optics of that are even grosser than the original sin. Because it would be a white man responsible for the absolution of a black woman. Janet Jackson, at the mercy of Justin Timberlake’s blonde ringlets. I never want to see this. Please don’t let us have to see it.

Due to his past cowardice and self-preservation I figured some would be offended by this invitation. As noted in these remarks, the question is how big of a fallout will there be? I'm not sure. A lot of time has passed and most have moved on. But on the other hand, booking him could backfire too. In this current climate of protest, it's not hard to imagine people protesting. In this light, he's not as safe as those executives with NBC/NFL may think.

-

I'm sure they'll may try to sell him as the headliner and a "mysterious special guest" all the way leading up to SuperBowl to intrigue as many viewers as possible.

She hasn't and quite frankly, she would be a much worse performer than Timberlake. Taylor Swift is nothing worth watching live from what I've seen.

Would've been cool if Metallica performed alongside Gaga earlier this year.

Another thought provoking article...UNJUSTIFIED
Justin Timberlake Owes Janet Jackson Some Goddamn Respect http://www.thedailybeast....mn-respect
Justin Timberlake is performing at the Super Bowl? Keep it.
I still remember being shocked when *NSYNC’s music video for “Gone” appeared on BET’s 106 & Park. The video-countdown show, a black counterpart to MTV’s soon-to-return TRL, usually only featured white artists when they were Eminem or Jon B. But “Gone” was one of the tracks on *NSYNC’s third album, Celebrity, that was designed to cement Timberlake as the boy band’s frontman. Previous albums featured more lead vocals from JC Chasez, the unsung star of *NSYNC, but from the moment the first single on Celebrity dropped, they had become the Justin Timberlake show.
This was OK because somehow, Timberlake seemed down. Those runs on “Gone” still give me chills. There’s no denying the body has verve and vocals. When he dropped Justified and teamed up with Pharrell and Timbaland, it was game, set, match. I’d forgotten about the fact that I once preferred Chasez and fell in love Timberlake’s honeysuckle Memphis twang. How could I have known that honeysuckle could sometimes smell like murdering an icon’s career?
On Feb. 1, 2004, Janet Jackson headlined Super Bowl XXXVIII and brought along with her Diddy, Nelly, and Kid Rock. No one remembers what the latter three did that day (but we’ll get to Kid Rock momentarily), because Jackson brought along Timberlake as her surprise guest. She’d been featured on his Justified debut, providing background vocals on the track “(And She Said) Take Me No,” so she invited him to perform alongside her on a national stage, in front of an estimated 90 million viewers. During a duet of his song “Rock Your Body,” during the lyric “Gonna have you naked, by the end of this song,” Timberlake grabbed part of Jackson’s costume and exposed her right breast on live television. It was later referred to as a “wardrobe malfunction,” but it led to a massive FCC fine and crackdown (the FCC eventually lost the suit).
But this wardrobe malfunction had heavy consequences… for Jackson. MTV, which produced the halftime show as part of their “Choose or Lose” voting campaign, threw Jackson under the bus immediately, along with its parent company Viacom’s other networks (CBS, on which the Super Bowl aired, was one of them). In the wake of the “Nipplegate” controversy, according to Rolling Stone, it responded by “essentially blacklisting her, keeping her music videos off their properties MTV, VH1, and radio stations under their umbrella. The blacklist spreads to include non-Viacom media entities as well.”
There’s an pulverizing irony in the fact the company that once didn’t air black artists like Jackson’s brother Michael was the same one that wreaked havoc on her career in the mid-2000s, creating an impermeable cloud of negativity over her next three albums. It wasn’t until the release of Jackson’s latest album, Unbreakable, her pregnancy, and return to the stage with the State of the World Tour that she finally broke hold of over a decade of undue blame.
Undue largely because the white artist at the center of the controversy received none of the backlash. At the 46th Annual Grammy Awards that year, Jackson was forced to “bow out gracefully” from the ceremony, where she was supposed to honor former collaborator Luther Vandross. Timberlake, however, was in attendance. As Jackson continued to lose projects, Timberlake retreated to work on his next album and dropped FutureSex/LoveSounds two years later to critical acclaim. The same year, Jackson’s album 20 Y.O. kept her still batting away questions about the Super Bowl. When interviewed by MTV, Timberlake said of the situation: “I probably got 10 percent of the blame, and that says something about society. I think that America’s harsher on women. And I think that America is, you know, unfairly harsh on ethnic people.”
Oh, you sweet soul, Timberlake. That was the only apology he had to offer Jackson, who not only invited him on her stage at Super Bowl, but had done it years earlier in 1998, when she included *NSYNC as the opening act for her Velvet Rope Tour. Jackson put him on and instead got silence in return. Michael Jackson even aided an MTV performance of *NSYNC’s when they were promoting their Pop album. Timberlake once said he felt the confidence to leave *NSYNC because of Michael Jackson’s inspiration. The utter disrespect he’s shown to the Jackson family, to Michael Jackson’s sister, after so much alleged inspiration is appalling. But not surprising.

Timberlake possesses the type of white privilege that’s benign, but sneaks in whenever his fight or flights kick in. Last year, when Jesse Williams won the Humanitarian Award at the BET Awards, he gave a speech about how important it is to support black women: “This is also in particular for the black women in particular who have spent their lifetimes dedicated to nurturing everyone before themselves. We can and will do better for you.”
Perhaps missing the irony while slinging hash at his subpar Manhattan restaurant Southern Hospitality, Timberlake tweeted effusive support for Williams’ speech and claimed to be “#inspired.” A follower quickly clapped back with:
“So does this mean you’re going to stop appropriating our music and culture? And apologize to Janet too.”
Timberlake, instead of remembering that one time he definitely didn't do better for a black woman, responded: “Oh, you sweet soul. The more you realize that we are the same, the more we can have a conversation. Bye.”
After Twitter users dragged him for his response, Timberlake deleted it and issued an apology: “I apologize to anyone that felt I was out of turn. I have nothing but LOVE FOR YOU AND ALL OF US.”

Cultural-appropriation accusations aside—that’s the least of my problems with Timberlake and most criticisms can be explained away by him being a white boy from Memphis who grew up loving soul music—the overwhelmingly negative response to his tweet should have alerted him to the fact that nobody’s really forgiven him for his behavior toward Jackson.
Jackson’s career has effectively recovered at this point. She doesn’t need the Super Bowl and she sure as hell doesn’t need anything from Timberlake. But it’s still damning that Timberlake will be rewarded after he was never punished in the first place. My only hope is that as Timberlake attempts to return to the Super Bowl arena, he’ll be forced to reckon with the sins of his past.
I don’t however, expect the NFL to confront its sins. The hypocrisy of how Jackson was treated versus Timberlake simply highlights how the institution treats black bodies. There are NFL players with rape and domestic-abuse allegations, but those are swept under the rug much more easily than Colin Kaepernick kneeling during the national anthem was last year. It’s fashionable to kneel now, of course, but that’s only because rich white men don’t like being told what to do, even if it’s coming from the president of United States of America.
Maybe, just maybe, it’s never really been about the flag. After all, during the same Super Bowl that Jackson’s breast was exposed, Kid Rock (told you we’d get back to him) wore a poncho made from an American flag and tossed it into the audience, upsetting the Veterans for Foreign Wars and former U.S. Senator Zell Miller. When it comes to the NFL, it's just like America—it’s easy enough to create controversy and get away with it when you’re white.

In this light, he's not as safe as those executives with NBC/NFL may think.

Justin's skits with Jimmy Fallon over the last few years have been popular, like the camp one and especially the History Of Rap series. There's been 6 of them. The Tonight Show is NBC. Justin was on The Tonight Show again last month doing the camp skit with Billy Crystal.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Yes, I'm very much aware of his skits with his BFF Jimmy Fallon. Yes, they've been popular. Yes his career has been preserved well. As I said earlier well see whether or not people care. I doubt it. If anybody cares it will be mostly Janet devoted fans, not the majority. The majority has moved on and never blamed him anyway. So it's not like Justin would be making some big comeback. To paraphrase our beloved Prince: he never left. In fact, his career only soared higher since then.

There will be more stories recapping his history on that stage. There will be more stories of what's the term? "white privilege." It's inevitable. However, if most didn't blame him back then, they sure as hell won't do it now 13/14 years later.
