Thu, Sep 14

She's expected to release her next album, Sex & Cigarettes, sometime in 2018.

She's long gone from being classy n' seductive to plain ratchet n' trashy. Sex & Cigarettes? I guess to desperately try and stay relevant, ya do what'cha gotta do!

Yea I hear ya but this song is better than all those other songs she has done over the years besides the work she did with Babyface.

I'm not sure naming a record Sex and Cigarettes is some pitch at being relevant. I'm not sure how that even translates that way. It's like saying "She only bought a fireplace because she needed new towels for her mom's house." No relation. Sex isn't exactly a new ploy to get attention in music. (read: Prince). So...yeah.

All that aside, it is a rather...bizarre... title. I enjoy the song. It reminds me of when Madonna went from the super polished Like A Prayer and I'm Breathless to the rougher and urban Erotica, then showed up with an acoustic-based debut single for Bedtime Stories. I remember raising an eyebrow like "Girl, what?" but totally enjoyed the change and growth of a favorite artist. Toni's sorta the same, although she's had a couple of bummer albums and lackluster launches. She's a crooner, but I'd love to hear her delve into doing a dance album. Some of her remixes are bomb (and she uses them in concert), like "Unbreak My Heart", etc.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

I dig the kinda old school Ringo drum fills and how she doesn't say the title in the song which adds a melancholy note to the songs content. Toni and some of the other major women from "back in the day" have seen a lot of crazy shit happen since the different style of music and promo in the 90s and she seemed to be chasing trends. It's nice to hear her do an honest little rocker vs like a trap song with Migos or something.

Toni truly works her magic on this song. After a series of sluggish recordings (aside from the Babyface duet album), she has at long last put out something that makes my pulse race again.

nice..... Toni Braxton has always had such a naturally sultry, sexy, breathy, feminine, soothing vocal tone...no yelling, screaming, long winded, octave stretching, vocal acrobatics, like some female R&B singers who try to do too much with showy vocal runs and phrasings (like Jennifer Hudson or K. Michelle. etc.)... she's cut from the same authentic cloth as Nancy Wilson, Dionne Warwick (when she was young), Sheila Hutchinson (The Emotions), & Sade... her voice just sounds like good sex...

Reminds me a bit of Lizz Wright, and there's a decent song narrative going here. With a title & lyric like "deadwood," it coulda' gone in another direction, but this is okay!

I loved it at first listen..It's a well polished Hit.....Toni is 49 and her voice does not sound stressed or anything...I mean, that voice still sounds like that 20something young Sista from the Boomerang Soundtrack...

SoulAlive

[Verse 1]
Can't believe that I'm home all alone
Doesn't stop me from wanting to see you
Why the hell won't you pick up the phone? Hello?
Don't know which way is up anymore
No excuses and nothing to cling to
Oh, you're shaking me right to the core

[Chorus]
Just want to let you know
I won't let this one go
You got me down, but I ain't out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down, but I'll turn it around

[Verse 2]
All my friends say "I told you so."
They ain't making me feel any better
Buttons up and it's on with the show
Got me aching inside of my skin
No excuses and nothing to cling to
You gon' pay for the state that I'm in

[Chorus]
Just want to let you know
I won't let this one go
You got me down, but I ain't out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down, but I'll turn it around

[Bridge]
But you gon' see a wiser me
And I won't break down easily
Hell nah!

[Chorus]
Just want to let you know
I won't let this one go
You got me down, but I ain't out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down, but I'll turn it around

Just want to let you know
I won't let this one go
You got me down, but I ain't out
Think you got me good
Left me like some deadwood
I may be down, but I'll turn it around

[Outro]
Don't you go
Don't you go

I agree. This song is Toni doing what she does best. There's no rapper,no trap beats,or any other hip-hop nonsense. If this the direction she's going in for the rest of her album,I'll definitely buy it.

I like this. It sounds like vintage Toni but not dated like her predecessor duet with

Babyface a few years ago.

This is seriously her strongest melody in years though I liked the musical direction on libra. Did she ever end up working with ne yo then? I do think his writing would be a nice fit with her vocals
