Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live @ the Apollo TV Special

Tue, Sep 12

Bruno Mars: 24K Magic Live at the Apollo
will air November 29 on CBS at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The special started recording a few days ago at New York City's legendary Apollo Theater; Bruno filmed the opening sequence on top of the famed venue's iconic marquee.

Also in the special, Bruno and his band The Hooligans will take to the streets of New York, entertaining and chatting with the locals.

The special will continue to record in the coming weeks, capturing a number of "never-before-seen" performances.

In a statement, executive producer Ben Winston said, "For me, Bruno Mars is the greatest performer in the world. To be producing his first television special is a true honor. This will be a special show and a special night.”

A CBS programming exec added: "Bruno Mars is the ultimate live performer of this generation. He is the very definition of event television. He burns the roof off the Apollo while paying respect to its tradition and history."

About time.

Fans who were in NY at the time said he covered songs like "Who's Loving You" and "Higher and Higher" at Sylvia's Restaurant in Harlem.

Rumor has it he also filmed an episode of MTV Unplugged which was revived this year.

The CBS Special will aire the day after the Grammy nominations are announced. I can see him definitely snatching 5 or 6 nominations.

Hopefully not, this album is not as good as Unorthodox, and that album didn't get a nomination for Album of The Year and certainly deserved it.

On 24K Magic Bruno sounds like he's phoning in leftover tracks from Unorthodox. It's an all-around frustrating album. I do intend to watch the special when it airs.

How? Unorthodox's music is 80s power pop / reggae rock with disco flares. 24K Magic pays homage to one exact genre: 90s R&B except Perm which is funk. To me, the production on 24K Magic is way better than UJ and I love both, as perfect feel-good albums.

24K is a better album than UJ. It's much more cohesive even though the theme of UJ allowed it not to be. However, UJ had the stronger singles.

You should be because standing on top the Apollo would be a great album cover.

I expect the live rendition of the songs to be much better then the album and I am looking forward to the special.

What I hope happens with Bruno is that the music industry starts to see that their is nothing wrong with the way Bruno is doing things and they get back to traditional music and get away from the trap stuff.

Start doing some artist development and A&R again. Go back to performers who can perform live.

I think it comes down to personal preference, many ppl feel that 24K Magic is better than UJ, but then again I've seen many say that UJ is a better album than 24K Magic. Bruno has gained new fans with 24KM, but there were quite a bit of his longtime fans who did not care for this album. Personally speaking, although I enjoy 24KM I prefer UJ as I enjoy listening to a variety of musical styles. 24KM lacks the variety but it is a very well done album that plays perfect homage to late 80s/early 90s R&B music. smile

Anyways I am very much looking forward to his very first TV special! Bruno is the best live performer out there today and he surely wont disappoint!

It's all about preference. Both albums are good but everyone is always gonna prefer one over the other. I really like UJ but 24K is an album I can listen to from beginning to end. UJ has a few skippable tracks ("Gorilla", "Natalie") so while I appreciate the variety of the album (as I always do), I prefer 24K. Like I said though, UJ had the stronger singles.

Anyway, looking forward to this special! Musical artists having one-off TV concerts/specials isn't common anymore so it's nice to hear that this sort of thing is happening.
