Petition to Replace Confederate Monuments in Portsmouth with Missy Elliott's Statue

http://pitchfork.com/news/fan-petitions-to-replace-confederate-monument-with-missy-elliott-statue/?mbid=social_facebook

"Getting this statue put up will be a lot of work and you may ask yourself is it worth it? I say yes and ask you to join me in letting us work it. Together we can put white supremacy down, flip it and reverse it."

Putting white supremacy down is a good thing but I'm not sure about that "flip it and reverse it" part. How would black supremacy or Asian supremacy be any better? Whatever happened to people being equal? Why does one side have to reign supreme? And why Missy Elliot? What has she ever done to deserve a statue? Surely there would be better candidates for a statue.

I could not have said this better myself. There are many more deserving people of all races that would be a better candidate for this. Nothing against Missy, but I do not think she deserves a statue.

I think that people might be a bit more sympathetic to the general state of Black folks in America, if they were able to conduct the mental excercise of "flipping the script" and understanding how the general evironment would impact one's life were "you" living in such a state. At any rate, I believe that catharsis is the point of this obviously fantastic suggestion! lol wink

We've got some very big issues remaining to be sorted on this side of the Atlantic and our general dog-eat-dog human condition.

She sold 30 millions copies of her albums worldwide, which, I guess, makes her a hometown hero.

I like Missy Elliott but she does not deserve a statue.

Why not Harriet Tubman? Rosa Parks? Bessie Coleman? Legendary Black women who sigficantly changed culture for America.

Ah, yes. Of course! It could be a nice tourist attraction and maybe do a bit to reshape the city's PR. If it were my statue, I'd rather it were erected posthumous. Otherwise, I'd be feeling mighty self-conscious whenever visiting my hometown seeing my likeness erected in sculpture!

Come to think of it, gee, why can't we find/fund a statue of the illustrious entertainer Marvin Gaye for the District of Columbia to set among those existing of military heroes, politicians & presidents, and humanitarians. I don't know whether one such statue or bust can be found thare on a public site. That would be a fun thing to acknowledge the ongoing cultural heritage of the place where he was a native son.

I'm not sure if they have a connection to the town. If they had, then it would obviously be more than relevant and deserving.

They might not have a connection to the town but I was just simply giving examples of Black women more worthy of being honored with a statue.

I honestly can't tell if you're being serious. I'm inclined to believe you missed the joke, so I'll explain it:

It's a reference to Missy's hit, "Work It," which includes the line "put my thang down, flip it, and reverse it."

At the risk of being controversial (somehow), opponents of white supremacy are virtually 100% for equality, not replacing it with something else.

I got the joke, sophisticated as it was. But through the quoting of the song, the meaning of what's said is that the intent is to reverse white supremacy. Now, any moron who believes that one can be superior to another based purely on skin colour are indeed morons, but if white supremacy was indeed "flipped and reversed" then there'd be "white inferiority". Which I'm sure some other group of morons would agree with but again, we're still having the same problem of separating classes based on skin colour. Which leaves us, as one collective "human race", no better off than we are now.

Selling records doesn't entitle you to have statues made in your honour. If Missy Elliot gets a statue for that then what next? Does Justin Timberlake get a statue? Maybe Dr. Dre gets one too? As mjscarousal points out, there are far more deserving people of that honour.

falloff I love the sarcasm in bold (and I mean that sincerely).

I kind of agree with you. Well, I totally agree with the stupidity of believing skin color makes you superior. In a perfect world, everyone would recognize the completely innocent use of the lyric as the joke it is. Sadly, "common" sense is a misnomer, so you have a point. Maybe he should've added a winking emoticon or something? lol

Yeah, a wink would have made things more clear. No doubt about it. smile

Though, it's not the joke that's the problem. It's that some idiots actually believe that white supremacy should literally be "flipped and reversed", as it were. And in my experience, most black people I know are not the ones who are guilty of it. In fact, and I must stress this is just from my experience, but it seems that it's black people, specifically black Americans, who have more common sense on this issue than white people. They know what it's like to be treated as less than they are because of skin colour so they wouldn't want future generations to have to go through that, regardless of whether it's white supremacy or black supremacy.

^ Those artists have statues not because they sold a lot of records. They made a big impact on American culture. So those aren't good examples to use. Missy Elliott has not significantly changed American culture. C'mon now

Honestly, folks, there's no need to be so sanctimonious about crafting statues. All it takes to do so is the money to pay for them and the will of a population to stage a showcase for the objects. Evereybody enjoys their cultural heroes or any kind of beloved or respected person, and statues of them are on display everywhere. Heck, in the town where I live there is a bust of someone who was a well-known bum!

>

This ranges a bit from the subject of replacing statues of prominent figures of the former Confederate States of America, but perhaps maybe not so much.

She has written and produced many hits for the last 2 decades.

By the way, out of those pics, I could only recognise Elvis Presley.

I believe this is a joke or at least I hope so. eek As far as supremacy in the U.S no minority group will ever beat old arrogant white people on this bender. What is surprising about this recent up tick is the number of young crying bitch boys who are a part of this movement.

No one is superior to anyone and no one owes anyone anything.
