Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five's Kidd Creole Arrested for Murder

source

Nathaniel Glover, who performed as rapper Kidd Creole from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five, has been charged with murder in the stabbing death of a homeless man in New York, police told NY Daily News.

"On Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at 2352 hours, police responded to a 911 call of a male possibly stabbed at East 44 Street and 3 Avenue within the confines of the 17 Precinct," a police report obtained by Rolling Stone states. "Upon arrival, police observed a 55-year-old male with multiple stab wounds to the torso. EMS also responded and transported the male to Bellevue Hospital, where he was pronounced deceased ... The investigation is ongoing."

Surveillance video was used to identify Glover, 57, who was arrested Wednesday night.

A police source told NY Daily News that Glover works as a handyman and security guard near where the incident took place. Glover allegedly had a run-in with the victim, who was drunk, according to the source, and reportedly exchanged words. According to TMZ, a gay slur was used, which spurred an angry reaction.

The victim's name has not been released.

Glover was a founding member of the lauded hip-hop group Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five. Formed in 1976, the group's 1985 hit "The Message" is among Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time. In 2007, the group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. They were the first hip-hop act to enter the ceremony.

According to Glover's Twitter page under his Kidd Creole moniker, he is scheduled to perform with...rious Five at Dell Music Center in Philadelphia on August 20th, alongside Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy Kane, Sugarhill Gang, Das Efx and Silk. The rapper retweeted the Furious Five's upcoming show information five days prior to his arrest, and it's unclear if he will still appear.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

What an odd story! Heard it on the news this morning, sad that RRHOF inductees are working security gigs on the low despite being sampled by Puffy and what not over the years.

Probably because Sylvia Robinson ripped off all the acts on Sugarhill Records. She made the money. Since she and her son Joey have passed, I don't know who gets paid the royalties now.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

The sons and daughters of mobsters probaly get money. The Robinsons were mixed up with the mob and Sugar Hill records got swallowed up by MCA which was also mobbed up. In addition, I doubt a lot of people are sampling the The Furious Five today and you still have to split the royalties five ways unless the Robinsons made them sell the rights.

That's hard news about the Mob/MCA and the Robinsons. I sorta feel sad for Kidd Creole as he could've avoided such a fate if they got their due.

Sugarhill and 99 records both went under due to the sampling of Cavern by Liquid Liquid for White Lines...they both went broke due to lawyer fees and constantly in court over it and it all went down thw toilet from there.

Rahiem: In the wake of the tragic incident involving Kidd Creole and not having all of the details of what actually transpired and why, we can only speculate at this point regarding what happened

It's extremely unfortunate and couldn't have happened at a worst time!

We can only hope for the best!

In closing, what I will say is life provides us with choices/options and in my humble opinion, our brother made a poor choice!

Hopefully someone will show him mercy because going to prison for murder at 57 implies life is over!

It was also the Robinson's ties to Morris Levy and the Genovese family.

Yes, there is a new book about Morris that I am going to pick up this week should be some stuff in there about Sugar Hill.

CoolMF

Rap (and the money that it generates) has come a long way since the days of Flash and the Sugar Hill Gang. Jay-Z rhymes about buying Basquiats and the rest show "money phones" on Instagram but Kidd Creole was, as of 3 days ago, living in a Bronx apartment and still working as a janitor or security guard (depending on who's story you believe) to make ends meet.

*

Yes, old school rappers like the Sugar Hill records crew still get domestic and international shows all of the time (BUT THEY DON'T GET ROYALTIES ON ANY OF THEIR SHIT), but how much, after splits/expenses/fees do they take home from road performances each year? More than $50K?

*

Lots of old rappers are still in the hood and still trying to hustle ways to make ends meet. Creole snapped. The whole story is sad. I remember, about 10 years back, when it was revealed that Kool DJ Herc was making ends meet delivering for Fed Ex. I hope that the rest of the Furious Five, Sugar Hill Gang, Treacherous Three, Funky Four, Cold Crush Brothers, and the other emcees of their era are holding up better than Creole was but I'm not expecting that...

Let me know when you're done reading it, I know a lot about the stories about Morris from the 50's and 60's way into the 70's the same goes for Began Cekic, serious shifty cats.

Kid Creole and the Coconuts Frontman Makes It Clear He's Not the Kidd Creole Who Stabbed Someone to Death
8/4/2017 by Karen Bliss Billboard

August Darnell a.k.a. Kid Creole of Kid Creole and the Coconuts wants to make it clear that despite some confusion from fans on social media, it’s the other Kidd Creole -- of hip-hop pioneers Grandmaster Flash & The Furious Five -- who was recently charged with stabbing a 55-year-old homeless man to death in New York City.

Kidd Creole (Nathaniel Glover) allegedly stabbed John Jolly, a registered sex offender who had served time for raping and assaulting a woman. He had been staying at a shelter in the Bowery and had at least 16 prior arrests. Glover was taken into custody Wednesday (Aug. 2) and charged for the Tuesday night stabbing.

To clear up any confusion, Darnell provided two separate comments to Billboard.

“I have been locked away in a recording studio in Copenhagen for the last 2 weeks. I did not know about this situation. Now that I know, I still do not know. Innocent until proven guilty is still the law of the land. Let's wait!” he wrote in the first. “All I can say now is that I have never met Nathaniel Glover but I thoroughly enjoyed the Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five experience. Nathaniel has never been involved with Kid Creole and the Coconuts. My condolences go out to him and his family at this unfortunate time,” adding a post-script, “to the KCC fans who were concerned by this news, all I can say is IT WASN'T ME. But thanks anyway for the concern.”

A few hours later, he followed it up with an addendum:

"I was informed, by various news outlets, that the victim (John Jolly) had no family, no friends and no home. If this is indeed FAKE NEWS, then obviously I extend my sincere expressions of sympathy to Jolly's family. I received a message today that read ‘#Kidd Creole has went off his coconut, and stabbed a bloke to death... a cha cha cha.’ There are 2 essential things wrong with this message: 1) it has not yet been proven that Nathaniel killed John, and 2) this Kidd Creole is not associated with Coconuts .... the fruits, the nuts, the seeds or the women. So I must thank you and everybody else for clearing up this matter."
