Lady Gagas halftime this year is the second most watched half time after Katy So ratings are doing fine for half time. The lowest watched half time performances in recent years are the two timees Beyonce performed which is why I find it odd they have allowed her to do it more than once when her ratings were the lowest out of all the other headliners. I think they should switch up the format or bring back rock bands.

NFL ratings took a plunge last year and the more they turn it into an entertainment spectacle the ratings will continue to drop just like in the NBA......

Perhaps people are not as interested in football, especially since those reports about concussions over the last few years. Football fans will watch it whether or not there's a halftime show. That's like saying people won't watch a TV show because there's commercial interruptions. Football is entertainment in the first place, why do you think people watch it? Why do you think people watch guys beat up each other with boxing & MMA, they're entertained by it. ESPN means "Entertainment & Sports Programming Network" and WWE is "World Wrestling Entertainment". Anyway things drop in popularity after awhile. There used to be a lot of soap operas on weekday TV, now there's 3 or 4 left. The nighttime soaps like Dallas & Dynasty have been replaced by endless cop shows like CSI Bedrock . lol Rock music is not as popular on Top 40 as it was pre 1990s. Fewer people buy CDs. Video rental places like Blockbuster went out of business. There used to be movies of the week on the 3 main networks starring Markie Post or somebody. They're gone or on cable TV. MTV had to change their format to keep viewers because their ratings started to drop when they were still showing music videos.

And ESPN ratings are plummeting too, all these sports leagues have went corporate an the essence has been stripped away

Bad officiating even with more technical advancements and inconsistent play

I think Scorp was talking about the ratings of the actual football game, not the ratings of the halftime show. He's saying the halftime show is the reason the ratings are dropping for the game. To a football fan, the halftime show does not make a difference in them watching the game or not watching it.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

If the ratings are dropping, it has nothing to do with halftime. There's way more forms of entertainment today and there's many sports channels, cancelling each other out. Some games are also online, so that can possibly cut into TV ratings too. TV ratings are based on Nielson boxes. How many people do Nielson today anyhow? I think it's based on watching live TV, so if people DVR a game and watch it later, does it count? Many people today spend time watching their phones instead of television.

Here's a real all time SuperBowl telecast from beginning to end....

Super Bowl XXV between the New York Giants vs Buffalo Bills, both teams were 13-3 headed into that game.....

That was the game where Whitney Houston sang her heart out and gave a top 2 rendition ever of the Star Spangled Banner......

they stuck to the program during the half time show, no shenanigans, focused on the game, and that game was the highest level of superbowl play one could ask for and for me the greatest super bowl of all time with the Giants prevailing 20-19.....

THAT was a super bowl telecast...they didn't have to do all the hype up....

Premier artists singing the Star Spangled Banner, that's A-1.....no problem

allot of these halfttime shows lately are sending out cryptic messages during the performances.....

If the ratings are dropping, what's it to you? Do you own stock in the NFL, NBA, NBL, or ESPN? lol Maybe you should invest in soccer, since it's supposed to be the most popular sport worldwide. Or the Ice Cube 3 on 3 basketball league. razz You always post doom and gloom end of the world stuff like people don't buy music because of a "pop ascension" rather than the case that many people download music for free or don't own a stereo/boombox where you have to buy a product to play on it. You don't need a CD, record, or cassette for an Ipod & laptop. lol

If?...it is.....facts......

doom and gloom?.......it's called deterioration of culture.........

anyone can google "why is music today so bad" or "why has music declined" and that person will find hundreds upon hundreds of articles on the subject giving insite and distinct reasons why....that person don't have to take my word on anything and can do their own research

matter of fact, I just gooled "why is music today bad" and the first article that appeared gives 11 reasons why?

I see comments on the regular from young people, teenagers who say they wish they grew up on the music of the 60s, 70s, and 80s....nobody forced them to say that, they see that for themselves

the industry knows the music is bad that's why they trying to come up w/every gimmick possible to stoke interest. Don't take no neurosurgeon to see it for what it is

the decline started a decade before music dowloading came to be

the NFL is focusing on the wrong elements to draw ratings and it should be about the game....

I'm a go watch this Big 3 though....peace lol lol

^^The music is bad to you, it's not bad to me. You can't prove it's bad, many people like it and it's popular on the charts. As far as pro sports in the USA go, whose culture is that? If you go back far enough, it was pretty much all white males. There were separate leagues for others like the Negro Baseball League and All-American Girls Professional Baseball League.

I would have enthusiastically suggested her a year ago, but after her NYRE debacle, I don't think anyone would want to see her doing a half-assed performance on the biggest stage ever. Also, she did a halftime performance during a Thanksgiving game several years ago when her Mimi album was out, and she just lipsynched through that. typing

yeah, that NYE performance was a complete embarassment.

Isn't it in Minneapolis next year? Why not get a rock and funk band do it so they can pay tribute to Prince? Hell, they could even get a Black college marching band to do a Prince musical selection. It seems only fitting to pay tribute to Prince in his home town and considering his half time performance is one of the best the NFL ever had but its clear as day the NFL is not about morals and doing what is morally right.

According to these articles, football in general is less popular with millenials than with previous generations. So halftime shows have nothing to do with it, it's more technology. It might have to do with younger generations have developed different interests. Probably like younger generations are less interested in the circus and Sea World type shows because of cruelty to animals.

Maybe a tribute involving vocal groups from the past and present eg. New Edition, En Vogue, Boyz II Men, New Kids on The Block etc......I've been watching the ABC's reality show Boy Band and I really enjoyed watching some of the acts that I grew up listening perform on that show like BBD (performing the classic "Poison").

Technology?....technology has been advancing for ages, even when the inaugural Super Bowl took place

same thing is happening with boxing.......

when the boxing world has to sanction a bout between a pro fighter and an MMA fighter like on saturday night, and try and promote it as legit, it's already a wrap.....

the problem is the script has been flipped....

trying to cater something to appeal to a certain age group makes the outcome more predictable than the result one is trying to achieve

whereas, when the history of the game spoke for itself, that history is what drew people to support the NFL....
