My favorite rock n roll band in history is the 1992 - 1996 lineup for the Black Crowes:
The Southern Harmony & Musical Companion; Amorica; Three Snakes and One Charm.

They, in my opinion, were the righteous descendants of Black American R&B, gospel,
boogie, and country music all thrown into one mix as rock n roll:

except, allowing for favored line-ups, i'd include their entire catalog. they fer sure were strongest right out of the gate.

nod All their 70's work are masterpieces and I think they are far better than the Beatles musically particularly during this period.

The Stones have made some great albums for sure! The Beatles had disbanded by the start of the 1970s although each member released solo work in the decade. One of the great "what ifs" is what The Beatles sound would have morphed into? The Stones had their hand in a lot of different things (Hot Stuff, Miss you come to mind) and not sure if that was a road the Beatles would have traveled.

My brother and I went to see them in Columbia SC back in 1998 and they started the show with
a raucous version of "Sting Me" - the same song above. But, when the kids in the first row felt
no inclination to stand up and start dancing with the rest of the entire hall, Chris Robinson stopped
the music, berated them, had the bouncers come and move them from the first row, and started
the show up again. We all went nuts.

It was awesome.

The only knock I have against the Stones is that they are really, just fundamentally, practicing
pastiche: their body of work is mostly an imitative art that is celebratory of delta blues and all things
Americana (country-western, etc). I think most English blues-rock bands from the 60s and 70s
are really just celebrating the music that GIs introduced to their country during World War II any-
ways.

The Crowes are from Georgia and really lived it: they actually grew up in southern gospel churches
and hootenannies, so their boogie down rock n roll gospel country music just felt more authentic to
me. That said, my knock against the Crowes is that Rich Robinson's bridges always contain moving
four whole steps up from the tonic, adopting it as such, and then moving back down, which gets
kinda boring after awhile.

I think the Rolling Stones 70s material is much better than the Beatles 60's material. I always find myself listening more to the Rolling Stones than the Beatles. It might just be preference though. You're right it would have been interesting to see how the Beatles would have transitioned musically in the 70's.

Agreed. I hope we get to hear clean, completed versions of MJ and Freddie on "Victory" and "State Of Shock"

The Wrecking Crew or The Swampers

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

They are great - especially that era. But I definitely prefer Led Zep. Even during the Stones peak in the early 70s - Zep are better. Better vocalist, better guitarist, better drummer, John Paul Jones was definitely a better musician than Bill Wyman, Zep had better songs - they were just straight better.

The 1960's and 70's produced such a large amount of great rock bands, I would be hard pressed to choose one. I've always been partial to Queen, but can appreciate everything everyone brought to the table.

In America, some can make a case for Aerosmith in terms of longevity, songs, and mass appeal. Not the biggest fan of their stuff, but they could be considered in the bigger conversation.

Because The Beatles didn't exist in this period. wink
But... I don't want to get into a Beatles vs Stones debate. I just want to give a big clapping to Brian Jones who defined The Stones 60s sound with his harp, harpsichord, sitar etc...

Co-sign. Early 70s queen in particular is just phenomenal. One of the odd bands where the critics had to catch up to the fans. Beyond the best known stuff, Songs like "In the Lap of the Gods", "Stone Cold Crazy", "Death on Two Legs", all of the album Queen 2, "Prophets Song" "Jealousy" "Somebody to Love"..... and on and on. Freddie as a vocalist is obviously revered but as a songwriter is highly underrated.

His personal travails, and the tragedy, kind of overshadowed the musical genius. Dude was amazing.

And influence on newer generation - right up there w/ Beatles, Stones, Zeppelin...

Can challenge all the best bands.

I don't think the Beatles finished up their careers as a rock n roll band, otherwise I would have
selected them as the greatest (pop) band in history. Everything I do as a musician working with-
in a pop context is because of them; and everything everybody working within a pop context is
doing, does so because of them.

But, I digress . . .

The Stones like The Who The Kinks and Led Zeppelin are all overrated I'm afraid.

The world's problems like climate change can only be solved through strategic long-term thinking, not expediency. In other words all the govts. need sacking!

Naw... they deserve all the accolades they've received. It's their influences that haven't got the amount praise they should be given.
