Raphael Saadiq: Childhood trauma; touring w/Sheila E./Prince

.

What an incredible artist he is. I never knew he had such a traumatic childhood. Amazing story of how he auditioned and got to tour with Sheila E., and Prince.

.

Throughout his childhood years, he sang in gospel groups with friends but his big break came at the age of 18; auditioning to be in Prince protege and drummer Sheila E’s backing band for the Paradetour. He remembers: “I was taught by my dad not to look excited at the point Prince said my name. I played the bass guitar in my audition like Prince meant absolutely nothing to me.” It worked, even if Prince’s non-standard take on masculinity would later come as a surprise.

Saadiq is behind, either as a writer and/or producer, the three most awesomest R&B songs of my
time:

D'Angelo - "Untitled (How Does it Feel?)"

Bilal - "Soul Sista"

Tony! Toni! Tone! - "Wild Child"

Yeah, the article says one should have been released by the end of May. And since I'm going thru
my own artistic deference to new-wave synth pop as he says he is, I'm very eager to hear it.
