Sgt Pepper Lonely Heart Club Album 500 Review

Im going to review all 500 albums on the rollingstones 500 greatest albums of all time. Im going to do 2 a week starting with number 1

  • 1 Sgt Pepper Lonely Heart Club

So this is supposed to be a concept album I guess it is in a loose way that the beatles are supposed to be a different band. This first song is a good opener but as a song itself its not somthing I would listen to again.

  • 2 With A Little Help From My Friends

The first real song sang by Ringo and very much drenched in sixties drug hippy culture in fact the whole album is.

  • 3 Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds

A trippy song obviously drug related and influenced. Simliar to tommorow never knows and the benefit of mr kite. Its good.

  • 4 Getting Better

This a good song john lennon adds some darkness to the song by talking about spousal abuse.

  • 5 Fixing A Hole

This song to me is kinda of average. Its still good though I like the muted vibe of it.

  • 6 Shes Leaving Home

I like the story telling in this song its nothing extraordinary though.

  • 7 Being for the Benefit Of Mr Kite

The music is great.

  • 8 Within You With Out You

I really dig this song I can see how it may not appeal to alot of people though and coming after mr kite is really what is the main strength of this album the different soundscapes right next to each other.

  • 9 When Im Sixty Four

And heres another example of that. The song itself is pleasant to listen too.

  • 10Lovely Rita

Probably the funkiest thing the beatles ever did I dig it.

  • 11 Good Morning Good Morning

Trash. I get its a conceptual experimental album but not all experimental stuff is great.

  • 12 Sgt Pepper Lonely Heart Club (Reprise)

Its a reprise.

  • 13 A day in the life

The best song on the album the soaring wailing by john lennon is spine tingling. Really an experience to listen too.

Overall

This must of blown peoples minds back in the day what makes this album great is all the studio craft wizardery and mixing soundscapes. Its definitely a product of its time. The songs themselves apart from getting better, help from my friends and a day in the life are good not great or extraordinary.

Does it deserve to be number 1 well I dont think any one album can be number one but its a good album regardless.

It could have been really great if Strawberry, Penny Lane, The Fool and perhaps Hello, Good Bye had been included. Get rid of some songs like Good Morning, Within You and Benefit. By the way Getting Better is from Paul not John.

Yes true than it wouldve been stronger song wise. Still though this album is more about sounds than songs.

Oh I know paul wrote the song but john lennon wrote the line about I used to beat my women thats what I meant by that.

Ok then. Do you think that All You Need Is Food would have fitted in the album along with Penny,Strawberry and Fool?

all you need is (food)?

Yes any track on magical mystery tour wouldve fit as they were still doing psychedelic stuff.

There'd be no George songs then. Can't have a Beatles album without a George lead vocal. I like the entire album and don't think anything should be removed.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

This is very true. It's part of a reason my brother has an issue with their music. he doesnt like the tame lyrics; he's a lyrics first music after type of guy, whereas I unfortunatley have to agree with him on this album especially. Revolver is my fav for upping the notch lyrically. This one is just more colorful and weird in soundscape.

I think thats what makes their music enduring though simple phrases people can relate to and melody.

You must listen to some pretty far-out, sophisticated kid's music if you think SGT PEPPER is like that

I’ve been informed that my opinion is worth less than those expressed by others here.

Well:

Took her out and tried to win her
Had a laugh and over dinner
Told her I would really like to see her again
Got the bill and Rita paid it

Took her home, I nearly made it
Sitting on the sofa with a sister or two

Oh, lovely Rita meter maid
Where would I be without you
Give us a wink and make me think of you

Lovely Rita doesnt really sit on the highest factor of lyrical content for example, but a track like Within You Without You makes up for it...but cannot be denied that some songs like Lovely Rita and When I'm Sixty Four are childish lyrically, musically they are great productions.

.

I'll deny that re: "When I'm 64" all day long. Childish?? That's a damn mature and witty look at aging - especially from a guy who was in his 20s when he wrote it. I think it's sophisticated, to tell the truth.

.

As for "Rita" I think it's a simple, throwaway kind of lyric. But honestly "childish" isn't an adjective that comes to mind for it. Maybe we have different ideas of what signifies "childish."

.

Looking at Beatles aside from Pepper, I'd go childish on things like "All Together Now," "You Like Me Too Much," and probably some others if I gave it some thought.

.

Not anything on 'Pepper' though.

Childish as in ...the song could appear on Sesame Street with puppets singing it with no problem.

I like the album but I think it may have been over-praised due to how well it captured the zeitgeist of the time when it was released. I agree that there aren't that many great songs for it's lofty status. Here, the sum is greater than it's part. Nevertheless, I'd take Purple Rain or even Abbey Road over this one.
