Billboard has a weird way to track "popularity". I mean, for me, for you, for any music enthousiast, there's no doubt that Billie Jean is the #1 song of the 80s in terms of popularity cause that song is still being played TILL THIS DAY in all parts of the globe. But somehow Billboard has a different formula...

Say Say Say was #1 longer than Billie Jean. I think it's the longest lasting #1 solo song for both Paul & Mike, around 6 or 7 weeks. A lot of songs only stay #1 one week. CCR never had a #1, but had several songs reach #2.

"Say Say Say"

That is a Paul McCartney song not a MJ song. MJ is featured on the song BUT its understandable since MJ slays and out sings Paul, you think its a MJ song.

If other songs were bigger hits, then no they shouldn't be. If something sells more than something else or was on the Top 10 longer, that is not an opinion, it's a fact. It does not matter if one song is more known than another nowadays, it was not a bigger hit when it was originally released. Like Isn't She Lovely by Stevie Wonder. It's a well known song, but was never released as a single at the time, so it couldn't chart in Billboard. No one could buy it as a 45, they could only buy the album it came from. With Thriller, it had 7 singles that reached the Top 10 on the Hot 100, but 2 or 3 of them did not make the Top 10 on the R&B chart like Human Nature. So for a R&B list Human Nature would not be considered a big hit.

Billie Jean is more iconic than Say Say Say. It DOES matter especially when you talk about defining songs from each decade. It culturally defines the 80s. When people think of the 80s, they think about MJ, Billie Jean, Beat It, etc NOT Say Say Say.

It's a duet and both are credited, so it counts for both of them the same way The Girl Is Mine is counted as a hit for Paul. Somebody's Watching Me is not considered a hit for Mike because he is not officially credited with Rockwell.

That does not make Billie Jean a bigger hit. It clearly says "Top 10 songs of the 1980s". It does not say what 1980s songs are more known today or which are "iconic". If Say Say Say was 7 weeks at #1 and Billie Jean was #1 for one week, 7 is more than 1. That is the entire point of Billboard, to track what sells the most and/or gets the most airplay for a week. With today, if Wonder Woman is the movie made the most money at the box office for a certain week, then that is so. You can't say that because you like another movie better, then that one is a bigger hit.

Michael Jackson even co-wrote it with McCartney so to say it isn't a Michael Jackson song doesn't make any sense.

I just looked it up and Billie Jean was 7 weeks at number one and Say Say Say was 6 weeks. I knew that number was inaccurate.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Records_and_achievements_of_Michael_Jackson

This actually says it was number one for 9 weeks

I said it was on Paul's album and although Michael co wrote and it was a duet it is technically recognized as Paul's song. There are better songs that could have been recognized for Michael in the 80s that were bigger hits and more Iconic that are not listed.

A duet is not a feature. A feature is like Lil' Wayne, Snoop Dogg, or Nicki Minaj rapping in the middle of someone else's song and Charlie Wilson or Daryl Hall singing a hook on a rap song. Somebody's Watching Me or Eaten Alive would be considered "features" since Mike is just doing a hook or background vocals. Tell Me I'm Not Dreamin' is not a "feature", it's a duet with Jermaine.

OK. My point is that the song is technically recognized as Paul's song. Every documentary and every time people talk about this song in pop culture, its reference as a song from Paul's album, that just my point. Now, I love the song. However, I don't think that song is a Top 10 80's song and Michael definitly could have been listed by his self for songs he wrote that were bigger hits. Billie Jean was a bigger hit so it should have been listed over Say Say Say.

One error of the Billboard methodology in the earlier decades (at least the 1980s) is that pre-sound scan there was no extra points awarded for being a huge #1(e.g., being way ahead of the pack in terms of much more radio and sales than even the #2 song in that week). These songs received so much radio play that they would burn out quicker than popular songs that lingered for several weeks but never were huge #1s. Also, MJ songs and Prince songs from PR got huge coverage from MTV and huge album sales that likely lessened their relative single sales, which would hurt their singles charts standing. All in all, the Billboard singles charts, especially in the 80s, were a flawed way of determining the top songs.
