2 Live Crew co-founder Fresh Kid Ice has died, as TMZ reports.

According to a statement from the group’s manager, he passed due to “a medical condition.” He was 53.

Born Chris Wong Won, Fresh Kid Ice formed 2 Live Crew with DJ Mr. Mixx and Amazing Vee in 1984.

The Miami bass group’s controversial debut album The 2 Live Crew Is What We Are was issued in 1986. Won would continue to appear on 2 Live Crew albums until the early 1990s; his debut solo record The Chinaman was released in 1992.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Wow, he was so young. They were so hard-core. Sad to hear this....
