That One Album You Just Never Listened To, But Should Have..

...mine is D'Angelo's Brown Sugar. So tonight, I snagged it on a torrent site, and sat down while editing a book I'm finishing up, and listened to it.

Now while D's genius isn't lost on folks around here, nor on me, I just never gravitated toward him as I probably should have, especially being such a big fan of folks like Jill Scott and Maxwell, and even Erykah.

I have to say, there's not a bad song on it. It was new, yet familiar. I suppose once you dip your toes in the neo-soul pool, you know what to expect, but still find surprises. Years late on it, but right now it's a favorite.

What is that one album, from anyone, that you know you should have listened to long ago, but never did, or just did in recent months?

I can't think of any recent examples but a few years ago my ex was trying desperately to get me to listen to Prince and I was having none of it. I always just saw Prince as being a bit of a weirdo and even though I liked the few songs of his I heard, as well as the Musicology and 3121 albums which had come out during this time, I was totally resistant to his older music on the basis of it "being old". By the way, I was only a kid at the time and in my own little bubble. So that's my excuse for being so ignorant when it comes to "old" music.

Anyway, eventually he persuaded me to listen to Purple Rain and I was completely blown away by it. Computer Blue and Darling Nikki became my favourite songs and I learned I was wrong to dismiss Prince as being a weirdo. I still thought he was a weirdo but that became a selling point as opposed to a turn off.

Man, concerning D Angelo's catalog, I've never really listened to his albums from start to finish, it's always 4 or 5 songs from each album that I dig... the one time I tried to was with Voodoo and it was A LOT to handle, multi-layered vocals, weird drum patterns... and this is coming from someone who's into weird shit all the time but I guess I can't handle so much soul lol

The one album that is a CLASSIC but never dared to listen to it was Pet Sounds by The Beach Boys. You'll find this funny: I own 3 Beach Boys LPs on VINYL (The Smile Sessions, Holland and Friends) and I all love them, but somehow I shallowly ignored Pet Sounds because I felt it was over-mentioned, over-acclaimed... literally in every ALLTIME list.. Of course, I listened to songs like Wouldn't It Be Nice and I Just Wasn't Made for These Times, but when I got into the album from A to Z last week, it was such a fine pleasure. It really changed the way I feel about Sgt. Pepper, the latter now feels like a copycat lol My favorite was definitely Sloop John B. Great piece of music. Still prefer Smile Sessions though.

Me too, I first discovered Prince in 2011 and his falsetto was annoying as fuck... However, I learned to appreciate it and read his music between the lines... Purple Rain the song did it for me, then followed the album, then his 80s output. Still never listened to anything else in his non-80s catalog apart from Gold Experience/Love Symbol/Musicology... and I'm happy this way cause I still believe there's a LOT to discover in pieces like Sign o the Times and Parade.

Any Pink Floyd album lol I've never listened to any Pink Floyd albums from start to finish, and they are considered one of THE BEST. Specifically, Dark Side of The Moon and The Wall.

Probably Pink Floyd as well. I almost got thrown out of a party a few years back for complaining loudly during Dark Side of the Moon about this "new age garbage" we had on lol

I can't think of any one album...but I can say I just discovered Stevie Ray Vaughn, who was a great performer with an untimely end.

Yeah, somehow I totally missed out on Souls Of Mischief's "93 'til Infinity" and Slum Village's 1st 2 albums.

I just cannot get into Pink Floyd. I've listened to Dark Side of the Moon, and of course The Wall in junior high. It just isn't my thing. I can fully appreciate their musicianship, etc., but nope - I don't own one Pink Floyd record.
