But younger people don't watch TV One. I'm 30 and I watch it. I'm 30 and also play the Shirrelles and similar type artist on my radio show. People around my age are watching Love & Hip-Hop, Power and Greenleaf.

Doesn't TV One have the show R&B Divas? That's pretty much singers from the 1990s and 2000s. There's nobody from the 1960s on the show. I Love The 90s tours have been popular for a few years now. There was a recent movie remake of Baywatch, and most of the TV show was in the 1990s. Xscape has recently reunited and theres a tour with BBD, SWV, and En Vogue. The 1990s are in. Even Unsung Hollywood doesn't have much pre-1970s, maybe Dick Gregory. They've done Viveca Fox & Meagan Good. It's doubtful that they're trying to reach an older audience with Meagan.

People watching R&B divas are probably in their 40s. My friends don't watch it but love Basketball Wives and Love & Hip-Hop.

Maybe you can check out music documentaries by the BBC. They do ones on acts or genres that don't get much attention in American media.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Sam Cooke

Watched that Sam Cook Legends video last week and was amazed. I had no idea that Sam Cook had started a record label, was about owning his material; ahead of his time.

Many inside here have named off such artists I've been longing for since the show's debut. I've mentioned it time and time again, but I wish producers would consider in changing the show's name to a more appropriate one such as for example, BEYOND THE MUSIC. I'd also like to see just some of these featured artists:

SOLAR Records
SOS Band
Maze Ft. Frankie Beverly
Brass Construction
Mandrill
Cymande
The Meters
Crown Heights Affair
Five Stairsteps
The Andantes
Randy Crawford
Joe Sample & The Crusaders
Dyke & The Blazers
Brainstorm
D-Train
Cheryl Lynn
Al Hudson/One Way/Alicia Myers
Lillo Thomas
Lords of the Underground
Black Moon
Jeru The Damaja
K Solo
Roxanne Shante
UTFO
The System
Newcleus
Shannon
Fonda Rae
Gwen Guthrie
Gwen McCrae
Thelma Houston
Leroy Burgess/Black Ivory/Aleem

I wonder why people here always make the same old comments about this show. 98% of the performers already profiled on this show aren't really "unsung" as in little known, that includes the Unsung Hollywood version too. Some have had crossover success. At least they're getting profiled in some way because they didn't get attention from Behind The Music and music magazines who always write about the Rolling Stones, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, & Beatles. I can find many books about Elvis Presley, David Bowie, John Lennon, and even the Grateful Dead & Yoko Ono, but not about the O'Jays and Johnnie Taylor.

Because that's what we do Micky, get with the program or exit. razz lol lol lol For real, many of these acts profiled aren't Unsung...

Interesting List. A lot Ive never heard of. Some I have forgotten about..

Back in the day on a college radio station Shaw University I think. They would have a few Jazz music hours where theyd play the hell out of Randy Crawfords"Street Life" ( plus artist like Al Jarreau, Brenda Russell,Michael Franks) Use to hate that song. As I grew older I have a greater appreciation of music. I love that song now.

I think Jonathan Butler would be interesting. I'm not sure it's that well known in the states that he started out as a teen singer.

Jonathan Butler would definitely be on point for an upcoming season of UNSUNG! I do remember him being very successful on the R&B/Pop scene during the mid to late '80s. However, with the changing music trends and the pressures, I'm sure, he had gotten from his record label at the time "to conform" to such fads, Butler, like a hot potato was instantly dropped. Being a true musician, he'd delve deeper and get more into his Jazz and Blues roots.

Again, I agree. Butler's story should be told and heard. Many have forgotten. Many haven't a slightest clue.

It's funny as to what you didn't pay attention to or liked [back] then, you have a newfound love and appreciation for it as you get older. As a kid coming up, I fondly remember "Street Life" and even the album cover. I was 4 yo then. biggrin
