SoulMusic Records is very proud to present the first worldwide reissue of two classic Motown albums (as expanded editions with bonus tracks) by renowned singer/songwriter and producer, the late Willie Hutch as a 2-CD set, remastered by Donald Cleveland.

HAVIN’ A HOUSE PARTY was Willie’s seventh album for Motown; the L.A.-born, Texas-raised music man – who had enjoyed success as a songwriter for The 5th Dimension and Al Wilson among others and who had also recorded for RCA – signed with the label in 1973 after writing The Jackson 5’s hit, ‘I’ll Be There’ and Willie’s initial success came with Motown soundtracks “The Mack” and “Foxy Brown” with charted singles such as ‘Brother’s Gonna Work It Out’ and ‘Slick’; his biggest US R&B hit was 1975’s ‘Love Power’.

Released in 1977, Willie’s self-produced HAVIN’ A HOUSE PARTY LP (a US R&B Top 30 best seller) boasted two charted singles (‘We Gonna Party Tonight’ and ‘What You Gonna Do After The Party’), after which he signed with Whitfield Records (hitmaker Norman Whitfield’s label).

Willie returned to Motown in 1982 with the infectious ‘In And Out’, a US R&B and dance hit and his sole British chart entry and popular club track in the UK. Three years later, Motown founder Berry Gordy Jr. brought Willie on board for the soundtrack of “The Last Dragon” and two tracks from that (‘Inside You’ with The Temptations and ‘The Glow’) formed the basis for 1985’s MAKING A GAME OUT OF LOVE, his final Motown LP. This expanded edition includes ‘The Girl (Can’t Help It)’, the rare ‘B’ side of ‘In And Out’ and three 12” mixes.

Notes by renowned US writer Kevin Goins include quotes from Iris Gordy, various musicians and others associated with Willie.

A Boy From Tupelo: The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings
release: July 28, 2017
https://68.media.tumblr.com/7ce45a8c95b5deb15d10a84094cfa614/tumblr_osj5cwZka61rw606ko1_r4_1280.jpg
Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, and RCA Records will release Elvis Presley – A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings on Friday, July 28.

Available as a 3CD deluxe box set and a digital collection, A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings is the most comprehensive collection of early Elvis recordings ever assembled, with many tracks becoming available for the first time as part of this package and one performance–a newly discovered recording of “I Forgot To Remember To Forget” (from the Louisiana Hayride, Shreveport, Louisiana, October 29, 1955)–being officially released for the first time ever.

A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings includes–for the first time in one collection–every known Elvis Presley Sun Records master and outtake, plus the mythical Memphis Recording Service Acetates–“My Happiness”/”That’s When Your Heartaches Begin” (recorded July 1953) and “I’ll Never Stand in Your Way”/”It Wouldn’t Be the Same (Without You)” (recorded January 4, 1954)–the four songs Elvis paid his own money to record before signing with Sun. A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings includes every Elvis live performance and radio recording known to exist from the period.

Essential to the understanding and appreciation of Elvis and his explosive impact on pop music and culture, A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-55 Recordings presents–in the best possible sound– every known Presley recording from his early career, when the world’s first atomic singer fused blues, pop and hillbilly country swing to create an electrifying new music that changed the world.

A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings also includes a 120-page book formatted as an illustrated travelogue and datebook chronicling the genesis of Elvis’ early career via facts, anecdotes, memorabilia and many rare photos. Independence Day 1954 is when this unique American saga begins, less than 24 hours before his first professional recording session, and it ends in December 1955, when the singer leaves Sun Records to record for RCA. The material is organized by calendar entries. During the months July through October 1954, the majority of the calendar is empty, as Elvis had his daytime job with Crown Electric, and music making was confined to the weekends and evening hours. This is Elvis Presley before he becomes world-famous, and an account of how this amazing young man readies himself for stardom, a young man on the pinnacle of an unprecedented level of success. “A boy from Tupelo” would become much more than a world-famous superstar, he would become ELVIS!

Behind the making of A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-55 Recordings lie more than 1,500 hours of restoration work and nearly 200 hours of additional studio time devoted to the painstaking remastering of the material. The results are stunning.

A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-55 Recordings is produced, researched and written by Ernst Mikael Jørgensen.

Disc one of A Boy From Tupelo – The Complete 1953-1955 Recordings covers the masters Elvis recorded for Sun Records, some variations, and the four sides he paid for himself. Disc two covers all known outtakes, even just the smallest surviving fragments. Disc three covers all the live and radio recordings known to exist.

On July 28th, Legacy Recordings will also release A Boy From Tupelo: The Sun Masters, a single disc 12″ vinyl package that chronicles the rise of Elvis Presley before he became The King of Rock and Roll. Recorded with producer Sam Phillips, guitarist Scotty Moore and bassist Bill Black during his first incredible year as a professional recording artist (July 1954-July 1955), this collection includes Elvis’ complete single A and B-sides for Sun Records, plus additional songs recorded at Sun Studio and released on his landmark self-titled debut album in 1956.

Gospel According To Al Green (DVD/Blu-Ray)
release: July 7, 1017

After filmmaker Robert Mugge produced BLACK WAX with Gil Scott-Heron for Britain's new Channel 4 Television in 1982, he and Channel 4's Commissioning Editor for Music Andy Park wanted to collaborate again. Park suggested Mugge create a portrait of African American gospel star Andraé Crouch. But Mugge, a longtime fan of soul and pop singer Al Green, countered that Green's rejection of soul music to become a Memphis-based preacher and gospel singer perhaps made him a richer potential subject.

Park agreed, though Mugge then needed thirteen months to secure Green's approval, getting his okay only days before the planned Seventh Anniversary Celebration of Green's Full Gospel Tabernacle. The Sunday afternoon church service would feature not only Green's usual church choir and musicians, but also a second choir from Ellington, South Carolina and most of Green's touring musicians and backup singers. Mugge arranged to document that December 18, 1983 service with three 16mm cameras and a 24-track audio recording truck, making it the first (and reportedly still the only) Al Green church service to be committed to film.

While in Memphis, Mugge and his crew went on to film an interview with legendary Hi Records producer Willie Mitchell who had produced and co-written Green's commercial hits of the 1970s, a studio rehearsal featuring Green and his musicians, and finally a long interview with Green himself. In Green's interview, he explored his early days in the music business, his creation of such popular hits as "Tired of Being Alone" and "I Can't Get Next to You," the traumatic events that led to his abandoning of his successful soul and pop career, the purchase of the Memphis church building which he transformed into a church of his own, and the ways in which his soul and gospel backgrounds had each informed the other.

Perhaps the most emotional part of Green's interview was his discussion of the so-called "hot grits incident," wherein a spurned girlfriend assaulted him in the shower with a pot of boiling hot grits, then ran to another room of his house where she shot and killed herself. This interview, conducted two days after his church service, was the first occasion on which he discussed this experience publicly, and he included facts that even his own band members had never heard.

In February of 1984, Mugge also filmed Green and his band in concert at the Non-commissioned Officers Club of Bolling Air Force Base in Washington, D.C., this time utilizing four 16mm cameras and the same Nashville-based 24-track recording truck he had hired to record the Memphis church service. It should be noted that, at that point in Rev. Green's career, he had embraced the Southern fundamentalist notion that blues, rhythm 'n' blues, and rock 'n' roll were "music of the Devil," and that, therefore, he should now perform only gospel music. However, among the numbers Green performed at the D.C. concert was Curtis Mayfield's "People Get Ready," which exists somewhere between soul and gospel. In addition, during the staged rehearsal in Memphis, Green agreed to perform "Let's Stay Together," which had been one of his biggest commercial successes and now represented a recurring theme in the film.

Along with fragments of a few more hits he performed during his interview, these songs helped to depict "Al Green the pop star" who had preceded "Al Green the pastor." While editing the film back in Philadelphia, Mugge also decided to interview writer Ken Tucker who was then chief music critic for the Philadelphia Inquirer. Tucker skillfully summarized Green's place in the evolution of American soul music and outlined the ongoing conflict between the secular and spiritual sides of pop music, both of which provided welcome context for Green's unique spiritual journey.

Among the top Memphis musicians who appear in this film are, number one, Lawrence H. "Larry" Lee, Jr., who was best known for touring with Green and for performing at Woodstock and elsewhere with Jimi Hendrix's Gypsy Sun and Rainbows; and number two, Mabon Lewis "Teenie" Hodges, who co-wrote Green's hits "Take Me to the River" and "Love and Happiness" and toured and recorded widely as a guitarist with the Hi Records Rhythm Section. Lee can be seen performing in the church service and rehearsal sequences of the film, and Hodges can be heard, and briefly seen, playing incidental guitar behind Green during much of his interview. Sadly, both men are now deceased.

The resulting 96-minute film, GOSPEL ACCORDING TO AL GREEN, had its world premiere presentation in the summer of 1984 at Filmfest Munchen (a film festival in Munich, Germany), its television premiere over Britain's Channel 4 later that fall, and its U.S. theatrical premiere at Justin Freed's Coolidge Corner Moviehouse in Brookline, Massachusetts a year later. After each of the two opening night screenings on October 25, 1985, Green sat on the Coolidge Corner stage and, accompanying himself on acoustic guitar, freely offered the commercial hits that he had mostly refused to perform during the making of Mugge's film, thereby demonstrating his storied unpredictability. Naturally, audience members at both shows were enchanted by his presentation, and since these and other premiere screenings, the film has been in constant release around the world. As to Rev. Green - now Bishop Green - this past December, he and his congregation celebrated the fortieth anniversary of his Full Gospel Tabernacle church.

For MVD Visual's new worldwide Blu-ray and DVD releases, director Mugge has overseen 4K remastering of the film and created a new 17-minute video titled SOUL AND SPIRIT: Robert Mugge on the Making of GOSPEL ACCORDING TO AL GREEN. Other bonus features include audio of Green's entire 1983 interview, audio of the climactic final hour of Green's seventh anniversary church service, an extended film version of a key song from the church service, and the personal telephone answering machine message Green recorded for Mugge in the mid 1980s.

Description
Put together by esteemed writer-producer Norman Whitfield, the Undisputed Truth were one of Motown’s flagship acts in the early-mid 70s, with 15 R&B chart hits – including their near chart-topper ‘Smiling Faces Sometimes’ and the original version of ‘Papa Was A Rolling Stone’ – and a string of best-selling albums.

Surprisingly, only one of the original four Motown albums by the group’s classic one-guy-two-girl trio has ever been reissued on CD until now. Generally regarded by fans as the group’s best, it’s a pleasure to finally have these albums available digitally, as they were originally heard.

“Nothing But The Truth” features the group’s eponymous debut plus their “Down To Earth” and “Law Of The Land” albums in their entirety and as originally issued by US Motown. It also features a generous selection of non-album A and B sides, previously un-reissued alternate single mixes and edits plus other rarities from UT’s golden era.

With typically extensive annotation and illustration throughout, the sleeve note is based around a new interview with Joe Harris, the group’s featured male lead throughout its Motown tenure.

Kent’s latest addition to its ever-growing Motown range will definitely win the approval of the many Motown completists who have been clamouring for the reissue of these albums on CD for many, many years.

DJ Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince: He’s the DJ, I’m the Rapper (Expanded Edition) (2CD-Set)

Originally released in April 1988 on Jive/Zomba, He’s the DJ, I’m The Rapper by D.J. Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince (that’s Will Smith for you youngsters out there) is often listed as one of the greatest hip-hop albums ever recorded, one of the first releases in the genre that “crossed over” into mainstream chart success (#4 on the Pop charts). But, hard as it is to believe, the original vinyl double-LP and cassette are the only places to hear the album in full. When He’s the DJ, I’m The Rapper originally came out as the first-ever hip-hop double album, it clocked in at just over 82 minutes. Rather than issue it as a 2-CD set, Jive shortened the album for CD release.

In the U.S., one of the songs was removed from the album while eight others were presented in shorter versions. To date, only rare 1988 German pressings of the CD contain the original, unedited LP versions of the songs, although even that version left off the last two tracks due to the same space issues. Ah, you know…labels just don’t understand.

So now, on the eve of the record's 30th anniversary, it’s time to set the record straight. Real Gone Music’s new, 2-CD expanded version includes the COMPLETE He’s the DJ, I’m The Rapper album for the first time ever on CD, taken from the original master tapes. But that’s not good enough for us…we’ve also added 11 bonus tracks featuring 12” single mixes, extended remixes, etc. totaling 54 minutes—in fact, the four instrumental versions and the live version of “Brand New Funk” have never been on CD, either! Sean Brennan at Battery Studios in New York remasters, Aaron Kannowski supplies liner notes, and we’ve included original album and 12" artwork as well. One of the crucial albums in hip-hop’s move to the mainstream, finally done right!

Descendants Of Mike & Phoebe - A Spirit Speaks
release: September 22, 2017

One of the most unique albums on the Strata East label – and that’s saying a heck of a lot, given the creative energies flowing through that legendary jazz outlet! Descendants Of Mike & Phoebe is a righteous little 1974 project put together by Spike Lee’s father, Bill Lee, and his brothers and sisters (Cliff Lee, Grace Lee Mims, and Consuela Lee Moorhead) – working here in a group named after their slave ancestors, who are paid tribute in a beautifully flowing batch of tunes! Lee’s round, warm bass tones are firmly at the head of the group on most numbers – recorded at a similar level to his excellent work with Clifford Jordan on Strata East during the same time – and other instrumentation includes piano from Consuela, flugelhorn from Cliff, and percussion from Sonny Brown and Billy Higgins – all used in a wonderfully evocative style that’s even better than some of Lee’s later soundtrack work. A few numbers feature vocals from Grace – singing wordlessly and with a really heavenly sort of quality – and together, the whole group have an undeniable sense of power and majesty, yet also one that’s touched by a really personal sense of poetry too. Titles include a great version of Lee’s “Coltrane”, which was more famously recorded with Clifford Jordan.
