Since when has Rolling Stones been credible? RS is trash. The lists and critiques they create are biased and politically driven. They always snub, neglect or minimize the impact of a lot of legendary artists and bands. So not sure why are you even mentioning them. Jay Z is a token Black which is why he is unfairly overrated on these lists. Madonna and George are not industry darlings like him so its not fair to refer to these lists as a accurate reflection of the impact of these artists.

You obviously don't listen to Madonna or GM, just say that. It is misguided to say a rapper you like is a better songwriter than another artist, "just because you prefer them"

What song has Jay Z written that has been more influential and groundbreaking than any of Madonna's classics she has written???

What song has Jay Z written that has been more artistic and superior to Nas?

[Edited 6/21/17 10:03am]

SNIP, do you listen to his music. This isn't Will Smith. Jay is a rapper that's all that needs to be said. People still go crazy that rappers are in the Rock Hall. And who said I like Jay-Z? It's obvious you don't like Jay.

Instead of saying "I don't like Jay Z", why don't you answer the questions I asked you.

If you feel Jay Z is a stronger songwriter than Madonna, George Michael or Nas, why not just list all the Jay Z songs you think are more superior to M, GM or Nas songs?

It shouldn't be that hard since you think Jay Z is so much better than them.

Jay Z IS a token Black and he is largely successful because of tokenism.

Songwriting is subjective because whatever song I name you will not agree with it because you made it known you don't care for him. And I think Nas is greater than Jay-Z. Not sure where this is going tho.

The creativity and the quality of how a song is written is not subjective. So I guess you don't want to answer the question because you know just as well as I know Madonna and George Michael are better songwriters.

Did you just say songwriting is not subjective. This thread is proof of that. I think Jay is nice, you think the opposite.

I'll say this, Jay-Z is higher on an all-time Hip-Hop list than Madonna or George would be on an All-Time pop list. Now that is a fact.

Hun, this discussion is on SONGWRITING, SONGWRITING...THATS IT.

I asked you to give some songs and examples of this great genius songwriting that Jay Z has done and to explain why you think he is so much better than Madonna and George Michael and you haven't.

As I stated earlier, you already showed your dislike for Jay so I could list every single ine of his songs and you'd shoot them down.

And no where did I state that Jay is a better songwriter than Madonna or GM, you said that.

FYI, Madonna is #56 on Rolling Stone 100 Greatest Songwriters list, 12 spots in front of Jay-Z #68. But I wonder if you take that as a win for Madonna since you said Madonna is not an industry darling and Rolling Stone mag sucks and they have something against her. Maybe Madonna paid for her spot like Jay did?

OKAY, Do you think that Jay Z is a better songwriter than Madonna and George Michael?

He was selected to be inducted over them.

Why do you keep citing RS??? Its obvious it means nothing and you are actually proving my point. If RS listed Madonna above Jay Z, why did she not get inducted over him as a songwriter?

This is utterly ridiculous. You either do not know what the word "subjective" means or the strand
you're smoking has hijacked all common sense.

Whether or not any piece of art, whether it be a painting, song, poem, is "good" or "bad" is entirely
subjective, that is, based upon your own individual and personal feelings, tastes, or opinion. Blue's
argument is entirely on point, and no wonder I have so many problems with you - you have no idea
what "subjective" means!

I statee he started out his career as BDKs hype man. And that is an achievement, from a rappers hype man to being worth almost a billion dollars some 22 years later.

And Jay was inducted kast year I believe. But I'm pretty sure this release has more to do with the birth of his twins than this award.

Nobody isfocused on grammar until one calls others unintelligent and mispells words lol..basic words and syntax. Thats comedy and hypocrisy at its finestnand lets be clear. You champion only those and that of your opinion. So transparent lol. But with your racist comments and racist feelings youve shown, it's understandable. it's not right, but we understand how you get down (as has been mentioned by a few here in this thread). smile

I hate when peeps sat Jay is overrated. And say because of his recent material. Jay has been putting out records since the early 90s. That's like hearing a recent O'Jays song and saying these guys are trash. How are they in the Rock Hall. Kr watching Patrick Ewing as a Orlando Magic and saying how was this guy ever an 11 time all-star?

WORD.... but with that said, Jay Z music has declined ever since Just Blaze stopped making beats for him.... because from 1998 to about 2003, Just Blaze, Kanye West, and Bink!, were lacing all the Roc artists with classic beat after classic beat... it was the production that kept mc's like Freeway, JayZ, Beanie Sigel, & Dipset making hits... when Just Blaze left and Kanye became a rapping Kardashian, Jay Z's music suffered ... Jay also dumbed down his flow (either consciously or because he lost a step due to age and comfort)...his wordplay and rhyme patterns and cadences became much more simplistic, starting around the American Gangster Soundtrack album or even Kingdome Come... so i see both sides of the argument as somewhat valid... but Jay was not overrated... hell no... mainstream rap music just became more simple, so Jay traded the complex bars for commercial success...

I agree, Jay was at his best from 94 to the Black Album. He still had gems on every release after and his albums were better than about every other rapper out at that time.

I ask this honestly of anybody who'll listen to this album: can you post here if Jay-Z actually says something he hasn't rhymed about since 1998?

I'm with LBC, the current standing of Jay-Z and Jay-Z's overall legacy are not mutually inclusive. He's got some great tracks and albums out there. He was powered by some of the best producers of the 90's and 00's, so that helps.

But Jay-Z benefitted enormously from timing. The deaths of Biggie and Pac, Biggie especially, left a huge void in the market. They were real MC's with commercial appeal headed for crossover success for decades to come. Jay-Z filled that breach, and it didn't hurt that he had Swizz, Kanye, Pharrell, Just Blaze and Timbaland along for the ride.

I lost interest in Jay-Z after The Black Album because after that, he was basically like a great actor who eventually plays himself in his movies. He had nothing left to say except he was successful.

There are a lot of MC's I'd put in the Songwriters Hall of Fame before Jay-Z. But he's the biggest name in rap history. Him getting in is predictable; they want to appeal to a younger audience, and hip-hop has dominated pop music for damn near 25 years.

No it makes him a famous name in music today.

But in this case, its appropiate to call Jay Z overrated. He was selected to be inducted in the songwriters Hall of Fame over Madonna and George Michael. That is absurd.

nothing absurd about JayZ going in the Hall ahead of George Michael...lets not inflate George Michael's legacy just because he recently passed away...jay was a much more prolific songwriter for himself (and others)...AND he plays the industry "game" better than most...maybe if GM hadnt selfdestructed, it would have garnered him more support...

Jay Z stans lol lol lol boy I tell ya almost as worse as Beyonce stans. Ya'll don't know what real hip hop is.

Do you understand the definition of overrated?

No other rapper has as many Grammys as Jay Z.

Jay Z is the most critically acclaimed rapper.

And now he is being inducted in the Songwriters Hall of Fame OVER Madonna and George Michael nuts

By definition, he IS the most overrated rapper. No other rapper has the acclaim and accolades he has and no he is not deserving of it, there are far more talented rappers than him before, during AND after his time.
