some more killer tracks from Questlove, Pino Palldino, Jesse Johnson, Roy Hargrove, Chris Dave and Spanky Alford.... let's be clear...its the instumentation, moreso than the the vocals, that make D's albums heat up... especially on Black Messiah...

Good question!

I like some of what he has produced over the course of his career, but he always struck me as (IMO) lacking the discipline or motivation to sit down and do the whole music business thing at everyone else's timetable. In a roundabout way, it is the opposite problem Prince had back in the day when there was so much product out on the market for fans to digest.

He obviously is a talented musician and Black Messiah was a welcomed addition to his solid (but small catalog). Hoping he continues to find/follow his muse and continue to create.

exactly... I suppose that his studio sessions require a lot of studio time and effort... that doesn't come cheap.

Goddess, I know you're a Kate Bush fan and there's one thing Kate and D have in common: in their vocabulary, the word "soon" means: "at some point in the (distant) future"...

He may not strike us as very prolific or hardworking but I´ve heard many people from his camp say that that´s not the case and that on the contrary, he´s too much of a perfectionist to release music he doesn´t feel 100% certain about.

Questlove and Alan Leeds have often mentioned that he´s written enough material in the past decade(s) to release several albums but for some reason he just doesn´t.

Questlove also hinted at some sort of outtake collection that was supposed to come out right after Black Messiah.

I really wonder what´s going on with D´Angelo.

Seen him two times in concert and both shows were amazing, no signs of bad health, sloppiness, drug problems or whatever.

Maybe he just needs to take his time, which is fine.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Like the instrumentation as well but I like his vocals even better.

Ill predict he'll release something before 2018

Probably wishful thinking on my part he should just drop a double album. Something about 90min long. Stick with the usual suspects. Questlove, Hargrove,Pino, Brent Fisher plus Angie Stone and Raphael Saadiq.stick to what has worked before. If its not broke why try to fix it.

If you care about when another human being makes art, you probably care too much, which is
ironic because recording artists (strangers) do not care for you at all.

According to D's interviews in the past couple of years, money was always the issue--he needed time to raise funds to pay for recording dates (the banks aren't loaning), as well as his own quality measures. So I agree with what Chancellor said--he betta' hit the tour circuit harder to pick up the cheddar to pay for more recording and production sessions. Sell some miscellaneous merchandise along the way, too, t-shirts, mugs, posters & vinyl--he's not going to get paid from all the streaming that people are doing with his music, that's fo'sho!

I saw somewhere that his reps had to strongly encourage him to release Black Messiah. He was allegedly desirous of tinkering with the songs even more.

Uhm, what.

There's nothing odd about wanting to hear more music from an artist that you like.

According to QuestLove and engineer Ben Kane, 70 rough tracks were laid for Black Messiah.

I,for one, would love all the unreleased stuff to come out --one way or another.
