Ralph Tresvant says MC Hammer copied "Hammer Pants" from New Edition I'm listening to Ralph's radio show right now (https://www.thebassradio.com) and a few minutes ago said that Hammer toured with NE in the 1980s, and Hammer asked them could he use that pants style. Ralph said he had no problem with it, NE had lots of different styles. Hammer got the credit for those pants because his career blew up big after he started wearing them. Ralph basically said that the person who makes something popular gets the credit, not necessarily the person who did it first. Now I think about it, New Edition was wearing that in the NE Heartbreak video, which was a year before U Can't Touch This. If you watch Hammer's earlier videos, he wasn't wearing the "Hammer Pants". You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

No matter who wore them first, Hammer obvious made them more popular. I had a pair! No shame. haha (They were comfortable as fuck.) " don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

Well these brothers were not the most business savy fellas in the business. They did not even know they had no recording contract with MCA for a quite a while and Ralph and Johnny only got around to copy righting the name New Edition a few years ago.

Yesterday Ralph mentioned appearing on the BET Awards Sunday. He also said something about New Edition planning on working with Babyface. Someone recently posted this 1992 performance on Arsenio Hall Show, which also features an interview with Jam & Lewis. The video quality is not that good, looks like they filmed the TV with a phone or something You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. No, apparently they have it on videotape and the poster played it and filmed the TV with a phone. I've seen several Youtube videos where people filmed TV shows with a phone or camcorder, usually they're jerky or you can hear people in the background talking over the footage. Some people still have VCRs like my mom. She has never owned a DVD player or a CD player either. She still buys cassettes and has a tape player in her car. I have a VCR too but it doesn't work and it's been in storage for years. I still have the VHS tapes but haven't watched them since it broke and there's things that have never made it to DVD and are out of print and also stuff I've recorded. Stuff like the Sun City album documentary (Little Steven, Run DMC, Miles Davis, etc.), Michael Jackson The Legend Continues, music video compilations by different acts, etc. You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B.
