70s' Soul group, 'The Whatnauts'

Anyone here familiar with the little known Soul group, The Whatnauts? The released three albums in the early 70’s and a handful of singles mostly through that same time period. While they were not major hit makers (only three songs made the Billboard Pop 100 their best showing a spot at #71) and a total of five on the Soul Charts (they did a little better here, topping off at #14) they sure did make some beautiful music.

They were label mates with the Moments and Sylvia Robinson (it was her label, All Platinum Records/Stang Records.) And their music is similar to Delfonics, Intruders, Chi-Lites, Black Ivory, Unifics and their label mates the Moments (the duet with them on a 1974 top 5 smash all the way over in the UK.)

I just purchased a double disc set featuring all three of their albums, plus some bonus unreleased tracks and a rare single from them in 1982. And let me say, this is some good music here. If you’re into the early 70s’ slow jam groups, you’ll love these guys.

Hip-Hop fans will also recognize a lot of these tracks.

A winner here!!! I'm very familiar with the group. In fact, I've gotten to know of their work over the years through constant sampling from some of my favorite Rap and R&B artists.

These cats sound like the Moments. I'm definitely gonna check them out.

Sylvia Robinson had a weird record label here called Stang records. LMAO

Short for mustang...named after her husband/label partner's prized vehicle

I love this group but their music is really rare, at least in Canada, especially compared to The Moments or Sylvia's albums.
