'BUBBLES': NETFLIX BUYS MICHAEL JACKSON BIOPIC TOLD FROM PET CHIMP'S POINT-OF-VIEW

(No, this isn't a joke from The Onion, folks. nuts)
"What if Bubbles spoke with a pseudo-Shakespearean voice and believed himself to be the heir of the King of Pop?" was the question that spurred writer Isaac Adamson

.

They're not stopping until Michael Jackson gets his life movie-and-TV-ified six ways to Sunday, people. Two days after the trailer for Lifetime's Searching for Neverland biopic, there's news that Netflix is working on "a whopper of a deal" to purchase Bubbles.

.

With the pieces in place, we can see why they're attracted to this spin on MJ's tale. It's told from the perspective of Bubbles himself, Jackson's famous chimpanzee pal. Wikipedia research is bad and everything, but you only have to read the first few sentences of Bubbles' entry to know this has the makings of an awfully eventful and imaginative film. (And a tragic one—after nearly 20 years together, Bubbles was sent away from Jackson's Neverland Ranch to a trainer when he became a more aggressive adult.)

.

To add an extra dollop of intrigue, Bubbles will be a stop motion animation film from directors Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok, Hunt for the Wilderpeople) and Mark Gustafson, Wes Anderson's animation director on 2009's Fantastic Mr. Fox. Isaac Adamson's script led the 2015 Black List, the yearly survey that ranks the most exciting unproduced screenplays circulating in Hollywood. (The 2016 Black List–topper, Elyse Hollander's Blond Ambition, a biopic about the Queen of Pop, Madonna, went into development last month.)

.

We haven't read the script so can't say if this device will make it to the Netflix version or not, but Adamson told FinalDraft.com last year that his ahamoment for the story was when "a lightbulb just went off: What if Bubbles spoke with a pseudo-Shakespearean voice and believed himself to be the heir of the King of Pop?” He also spoke about the film getting the animated angle when it was acquired by Dan Harmon's Starburns Industries, which did Charlie Kaufman and Duke Johnson's Oscar-nominated Anomalisa:

.

“The brand of hyper-realistic stop-motion animation pioneered in Anomalisa, besides looking amazing, solves a lot of the practical puzzles in turning this script into an actual film, like how do we find an actor who looks like Michael Jackson, how do we train a chimpanzee to do the moonwalk, how can we recreate Neverland without spending a bajillion dollars.”

This scenario, of a chimpanzee living with some type of dissociative disorder, is kinda aligned with the
idea of Michael Jackson also living with some type of personality and/or obsessive-compulsive disorder
like body-dysmorphic D/O. And more times than not, in my experience, people who are living with a
personality disorder are really dealing with the effects of some type of trauma, and we all know what
to make of Joe Jackson's abilities as a parent.

My heart breaks everytime I think about how Michael Jackson never had a fucking chance to live out a
"normal" life as a child prodigy who was constantly abused by an overbearing parent.

Okay, I already had this face whofarted at the idea of a biopic from the chimps point of view. Then I see he has a psuedo-shakespearean voice. I think I need to quaduple my whofarted face. boxed yep, I'm watching.

Michael Jackson-Themed Egyptian Movie ‘Sheikh Jackson’ Picked Up by Media Luna

by Leo Barraclough, May 21, 2017 Variety

Michael Jackson-Themed Egyptian Pic 'Sheikh Jackson'

Media Luna has acquired the rights to Egyptian movie “Sheikh Jackson,” which centers on an Islamic cleric who revisits his teenage obsession with Michael Jackson.

The film, directed by Amr Salama, is set in 2009 when news of the singer’s death causes the cleric to undergo an identity crisis.

“We are proud to lead this young talented director to cross borders with such a delicate story, told with such an original tone and visionary in its way,” Ida Martins, CEO of Media Luna, said. “[The film] has the potential to touch the hearts of people no matter where they’re from as at the end of the day it is about being brave and learning how get to know and take care of oneself.”

The director said it is “a truly personal film” and “I don’t see myself doing another film where I can be that exposed and vulnerable telling a deeply personal story, a story that can be a wake-up call and an insightful look into the lives of the ‘other.’”

Ahmed El Feshawy plays the lead role, while rising young star Ahmed Malek plays the cleric as a teenager. Veteran actor Maged El-Kedwany stars as the cleric’s authoritarian father.

The film is produced by Mohamed Hefzy of Film Clinic, the Egyptian production powerhouse, which is behind films such as Un Certain Regard 2016 opener “Clash” by Mohamed Diab and “Ali, the Goat and Ibrahim” by Sherif el Bindary, as well as Hani Ossama of The Producers, the company behind the local hits “Excuse My French” and “Hepta.”

“We are very happy to be working with Media Luna. Their reputation and track record are excellent, but it’s their passion and belief in the film that made us instantly convinced that they were the best partner for the film. We look forward to a long and successful working relationship,” Hefzy said.

The deal was negotiated by Daniel Ziskind, the manager of Film Clinic in Europe.

The estate of Michael Jackson released the following statement on Monday regarding the project and others like it:

To clear up any confusion or misperceptions about unsanctioned Michael Jackson projects currently in the news — including a Lifetime television movie and an animated film script recently purchased by Netflix — the Estate of Michael Jackson does not license or permit the use of any rights it owns, including to Michael’s music, images, video and films, for use in unauthorized works seeking to exploit Michael’s legacy. The Estate itself has numerous projects in development, all of which respect, honor and celebrate Michael’s life and legacy along with his extraordinary artistry that touched fans throughout the world. When the executors are ready to announce them, they will. As Michael said countless times about his own work, the quality goes in before the name goes on.
