Songs with the Steely Dan Sound / Influence

....

Donald and Walter are clearly in a class by themselves.

...

But I've been coming across these tunes over the years-- tunes that feature the Jazzy/Blues licks, the Mu Chords--sometimes the Purdie Shuffle--- sometimes the wry lyrics....songs where you can definitely hear the Dan influence...or where it's a Steely tribute....

....

...

State Cows - Center of The Sun

...

...

Daryl Aberhart - Longtime Denizens

...

...

The Stepkids -The Lottery

...

....

One of the least known, but perhaps the most prominent?

"1999"

The greatest song the Dan ever made, 1977's "Deacon Blues," features this couplet: I cried when I wrote this song/Sue me if I play too long.

1982's "1999" contains the following couplet: I was dreamin when I wrote this/So sue me if I go too fast.

Prince's "Money Don't Matter 2Night" also has a very Dan-esque feel to it.

More recently, two songs from Mayer Hawthorne's standout 2013 album, Where Does This Door Go, feature 2 songs that really remind me of the Dan -- "Reach Out Richard" and "The Stars Are Ours". Both were produced by Pharrell IIRC.

Good night, sweet Prince | 7 June 1958 - 21 April 2016

Good point about 1999, and Money Don't Matter...

I agree about Mayer, I had included a link a few posts up above, to "The Stars are Ours"....

I read an interview where Mayer said he used to use them as a litmus test like, "if you don't like Steely Dan, I don't like you", LOL!!

Interesting. I can hear that. There's a song the Dan made years after, "Almost Gothic," that has the feel of "Woman," now that I think about it.

Great thread.

Canadian band Monkey House's discography has a Becker and Fagan influence throughout, and the band occasionally has tapped the talent of Steely Dan collaborators like guitarist Drew Zingg and trumpet player/horn arranger Michael Leonhart.

The 2012 track "Where's Mantis Evar?" is one of my favourites from Monkey House...

Kool! Thanks, I'll check their other stuff out!

I was wondering what happened to Zingg, I was impressed with his playing during the Dan's '93 tour...

Yup, I can see that--this would be a Kool idea for a podcast or radio show --I can hear all this stuff melding together....

I always liked China Crisis, too - but then, Walter Becker produced two of their albums, so a little Steely Dan was gonna seep in...

Ndeed--Actually, I had to go back and Listen again--and there is that feel, especially with Prince on piano....

I could even hear this being played after a Dan tune like , "Your Gold Teeth II", were Donald is playing acoustic piano....
