Reissue Talk 28 XXVIII

Parlophone are releasing Kraftwerk: 3-D The Catalogue next month, an audio/video document – available in a number of physical editions – that features all eight albums as performed live in the leading museums of the world in the last few years.

This set – which is available as a deluxe blu-ray box set, vinyl box, and CD set – features the eight classic Kraftwerk albums in chronological order: Autobahn (1974), Radio-Activity (1975), Trans Europe Express (1977), The Man-Machine (1978), Computer World (1981), Techno Pop(1986), The Mix (1991) and Tour De France (2003) – filmed and recorded between 2012 and 2016 on the band’s 3-D World Tour. The locations include MoMA (New York), The Tate Modern Turbine Hall (London), Akasaka Blitz (Tokyo), Opera House (Sydney), Norske Opera (Oslo), Paradiso (Amsterdam), Fondation Louis Vuitton (Paris) and Neue National Galerie (Berlin).

The 12 x 12-inch Deluxe Blu-Ray/Book edition features four Blu-Ray discs and a 236-page hardback art-book containing computer generated images from the 3-D multi-media performances alongside a selection of unseen photos. Two blu-rays cover the album performances, the other two discs contain tour films and projections. Everything is 3D but compatible with standard 2D. These all have Dolby Atmos 5.1 audio too, if you’re amp is compatible! The total running time is 436 minutes.

The nine-LP deluxe vinyl box set has the eight albums (The Mix being a double) as performed across the world and mixed by Kraftwerk, who say the sound quality is “peerless”. An eight-CD boxset mirrors the vinyl package, but is considerably cheaper.

If all this is too much, then abriged 77-minute versions are available on two-LP vinyl and on both discs of a blu-ray+DVD combo pack

3-D The Catalogue is issued on 26 May 2017.

Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band 50th Anniversary

Release: May 26, 2017

The Beatles will celebrate the 50th anniversary of their groundbreaking album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band with several reissue packages arriving May 26th.

A new stereo mix of the album will be available as a single CD and as part of every other package. An expanded deluxe edition will be released digitally, as a two-CD set or two-LP vinyl package. A super deluxe six-disc box set will also be available.

All three deluxe editions of Sgt. Pepper will boast previously unreleased complete takes of all 13 album tracks. The deluxe CD and digital versions will also include new stereo mixes: a previously unreleased instrumental take of "Penny Lane" and two unreleased takes of "Strawberry Fields Forever."

The super deluxe box set come with all of the aforementioned CDs, plus 33 more recordings from the Sgt. Pepper sessions, most of which have never been released and were newly mixed from the four-track session tapes. A fourth disc will include early, unreleased mono mixes of several songs and a direct transfer of the album's original mono mix. Discs five and six will boast surround-sound audio mixes of the album on Blu-ray and DVD, as well as promo films for several tracks and a restored version of the rare 1992 documentary, The Making of Sgt. Pepper.

The super deluxe package will also come with a 144-page hardcover book featuring a new introduction from Paul McCartney and producer Giles Martin, who newly mixed the reissue with Sam Okell. The book will explore every facet of Sgt. Pepper, from its songs and legendary cover art to musical innovations and historical context. Beatles historian Kevin Howlett, composer and musicologist Howard Goodall, producer Joe Boyd and journalists Ed Vulliamy and Jeff Slate all contributed to the book. A 50-page abridged booklet will be available in the two-CD deluxe edition.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

Radiohead Reissuing OK Computer w/ Previously Unreleased Tracks
May 02

After posting a typically cryptic teaser video, Radiohead has officially announced that they are reissuing their 1997 landmark album album OK Computer in honor of its 20th anniversary. The release is officially titled OKNOTOK, and will arrive as a two-CD set, three-LP collection and digitally on June 23.

OKNOTOK

All the material on the reissue was "newly remastered from the original analogue tapes," according to a press release.

If that's not enough for you, there's also the OKNOTOK Boxed Edition, which ships in July. The package includes a book of lyrics and never-before-seen artwork, a collection of Thom Yorke's notes taken during the OK Computer sessions, and a cassette mix tape featuring "session archives and demo tapes."

You can pre-order OKNOTOK in all of its various formats now via OKNOTOK.co.uk.

OK Computer
was first released in Japan on May 21, 1997. It debuted in their native U.K. the next month, but didn't arrive in the U.S. until July 1997. The album was added to the Library of Congress' National Recording Registry in 2015.

Here is the OKNOTOK track list:

Disc 1:

"Airbag"
"Paranoid Android"

Description
“Soul Dancing”, the third album from powerhouse vocalist and perennial pop icon Taylor Dayne, is given a Deluxe Edition double CD reissue on Cherry Pop.

Originally released in 1993, the gold-certified “Soul Dancing” found Taylor developing her sound with an all-star cast including Shep Pettibone, Clivillés & Cole, Humberto Gatica, Narada Michael Walden, Diane Warren, Keith Washington and Ric Wake.

Digitally remastered direct from the master tapes, this Deluxe Edition also includes extensive bonus material. ‘Original Sin’, a classic collaboration with Jim Steinman from the soundtrack of the 1994 film “The Shadow”, features alongside the hit 1995 remixes of Taylor’s debut smash ‘Tell It To My Heart’.

An entire disc of full-length club mixes, several on CD for the first time, brings together standout productions from many of the biggest names in 90s dance including David Morales, Steve “Silk” Hurley, E-Smoove, Tempo and the late Tony De Vit.

With personal input from Taylor herself, the extensive booklet also features additional photos, a fully illustrated discography and recording data, lyrics and brand new sleeve notes.

Description
SoulMusic Records is very proud to present a first-of-its kind anthology that includes key tracks from the pioneering group Labelle recorded between 1973-1976 for RCA and Epic; and solo recordings by Sarah Dash (1978-1981, for Kirshner); Nona Hendryx (1979 for Arista and 1983-1986 for RCA); and Patti LaBelle (1977-1980 for Epic Records). Among the 36 tracks are three tracks by Nona only released in Europe, single edits of charted hits by the group, Nona and Patti and key album cuts by Sarah, Patti and the trio.

Formed in the early 60s in Philadelphia as Patti LaBelle & The Bluebelles (with a line-up that included Cindy Birdsong), original members Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx and Sarah Dash morphed into Labelle, described in the notes for this tour-de-force 2-CD by renowned US author Rashod Ollison as ‘intergalactic divas’ with the guidance of British music industry maven Vicki Wickham.

Known for their powerhouse performances and futuristic outfits, Labelle enjoyed an international breakthrough in 1975 with “Lady Marmalade” from one of the three albums recorded for Epic Records; the ten cuts by the trio featured here include ‘Something In The Air/The Revolution Will Not Be Televised’ (from the one-off RCA 1973 LP, “Pressure Cookin’”) and three key album cuts (‘Are You Lonely?,’ ‘You Turn Me On’ and ‘Who’s Watching The Watcher’.

Following Labelle’s 1976 breakup, Patti began recording for Epic Records and in addition to US charted singles, compiler David Nathan of SoulMusic Records has included two soulful LP cuts drawn from her four solo LPs for the label. Sarah started recording for Kirshner Records in 1978 and included are her big club hit, ‘Sinner Man’ and selections from her three LPs for the label. Nona’s ten cuts featured on the anthology include three tracks recorded for Arista Records in 1979 that are gaining their first release outside Europe; and her seven US charted singles from the three LPs she recorded for RCA in the early to mid-80s.

In addition to notes by Ollison with 2017 quotes from Sarah and Nona, an additional essay by David Nathan on the solo recordings also includes comments from both.

Description
SoulMusic Records is very proud to present “I Try: The Anthology, 1978-1993,” a 2-CD set of charted singles, key album cuts and guest appearances from the inimitable singer/songwriter Angela Bofill, spanning the most prominent period of her recording career.

A native New Yorker, Angela became the second artist signed to GRP Records, formed by producers Dave Grusin and Larry Rosen in 1978: her debut LP, “Angie” heralded the arrival of one of the mainstay ‘voices’ in the burgeoning ‘quiet storm’ radio format in the US thanks to tracks such as ‘Under The Moon And Over The Sky’ and ‘This Time I’ll Be Sweeter’, the first of a dozen charted singles included on this first-of- its-kind anthology of Angela’s much-loved work.

Angela’s sophomore album, “Angel Of The Night” proved even more successful thanks to the title track and the now- timeless classic ‘I Try’, both staples of Angela’s live repertoire. Switching to Arista Records in 1981, Angela began working with label chief Clive Davis, resulting in another five best-selling albums from which came her biggest charted hits, including ‘Too Tough’ and ‘Tonight I Give In’.

This sumptuous 2-CD lovingly compiled by SoulMusic Records’ founder David Nathan (who began conducting interviews with Angela after the release of her debut LP) includes a number of rare tracks such as ‘All The Reasons Why’, ‘Love & Marriage’, ‘Love Light’ and ‘Rhythm Of Your Mind’, all of which were first released between 2002-2007. In addition, the anthology features five stellar guest appearances with artists such as Narada Michael Walden (who produced three of Angie’s Arista albums), Johnny Mathis, Carl Anderson, Stanley Clarke, Marian Meadows and Kirk Whalum; and tracks from Angela’s one-off 1993 LP for Jive Records including the title track, ‘I Wanna Love Somebody’.

The superb music on this anthology is augmented by stellar liner notes from renowned US writer, A. Scott Galloway who has included extensive quotes from Angela herself along with comments by producers, songwriters and musicians including Walden, Mic Murphy & David Frank, Preston Glass, Kirk Whalum, Buddy Williams, Eve Nelson, Derek Bramble and others.

American Epic (DVD / Blu-Ray)
release: June 13, 2017

Go inside one of the greatest-ever untold stories: how the ordinary people of America were given the opportunity to make records for the first time.

THE BIG BANG: At the height of the Roaring Twenties, music scouts armed with cutting-edge recording technology set out across America to capture the unsung voices of everyday folk. This is the Big Bang of modern popular music-the first time America hears itself.

BLOOD & SOIL: America's poor-cotton field slaves, mine workers, sharecroppers-find freedom through music, creating gospel, protest songs, and Delta Blues.

OUT OF THE MANY, THE ONE: Exotic cultures spanning America are captured on record for the first time-inventing new instruments and new cultural identities as disparate voices harmonize in a musical melting pot.

THE AMERICAN EPIC SESSIONS: Jack White and T Bone Burnett produce an epic recording session using the only working 1920s recording device in existence in this tribute to the artists celebrated in the documentary. Starring Alabama Shakes, The Americans, Ana Gabriel, Ashley Monroe, The Avett Brothers, Beck, Bettye Lavette, Bobby Ingano, Elton John, Frank Fairfield, Jerron Paxton, Los Lobos, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Nas, Pokey LaFarge, Raphael Saadiq, Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Martin & Edie Brickell, Taj Mahal, Jack White, and Willie Nelson & Merle Haggard.

American Epic: The Collection (5 CD box set)
release: May 12, 2017

Legacy Recordings, the catalog division of Sony Music Entertainment, will release AMERICAN EPIC: The Collection, a 5-CD/100 song deluxe box set, and AMERICAN EPIC: The Soundtrack, a single disc anthology of 15 songs featured in the AMERICAN EPIC three-part historical documentary (1LP or 1CD), on Friday, May 12.

AMERICAN EPIC: The Collection and AMERICAN EPIC: The Soundtrack–each available digitally or as physical product–lead the way for a series of releases of music associated with the film series AMERICAN EPIC, produced by Allison McGourty, Duke Erikson and Directed by Bernard MacMahon, premiering in the U.S. on PBS on Tuesdays May 16, 23 and 30 at 9 p.m. (check local listings) and in the U.K. on BBC in May.

The AMERICAN EPIC historical documentaries are a journey back in time to the “Big Bang” of modern popular music.

In the 1920s, as radio took over the pop music business, record companies were forced to leave their studios in major cities in search of new styles and markets. Ranging the mountains, prairies, rural villages, and urban ghettos of America, they discovered a wealth of unexpected talent. The recordings they made of all the ethnic groups of America democratized the nation and gave a voice to everyone. Country singers in the Appalachians, Blues guitarists in the Mississippi Delta, Gospel preachers across the south, Cajun fiddlers in Louisiana, Tejano groups from the Texas Mexico border, Native American drummers in Arizona, and Hawaiian musicians were all recorded. For the first time, a woman picking cotton in Mississippi, a coalminer in Virginia or a tobacco farmer in Tennessee could have their thoughts and feelings heard on records played in living rooms across the country. It was the first time America heard itself.

AMERICAN EPIC: The Collection gathers 100 of these original recordings from the 1920s and 1930s in one five-disc set, restored to unprecedented levels of sonic fidelity. For these releases, compiled by Director Bernard MacMahon, engineer Nicholas Bergh refined a transfer process using a mix of both modern and vintage equipment in order to extract the remarkable resolution from the records that is often missed. This ‘reverse engineering’ approach to the transfer process enabled the restoration team of Grammy Award-winning engineer Peter Henderson, Duke Erikson and Joel Tefteller to get the resulting audio closer to the original performance than ever before.

This is not “remastering,” in the normal sense, but something closer to fine art restoration. The intent is not for people to marvel at the antiquity of these discs, but rather to experience them as vital, immediate performances that speak to us as directly as they did on the day they were recorded—not simply great art for their time, but great art for all times. It includes a 100-page book filled with stunning unpublished photographs, quotes from the artists, their friends and families, lyrics for every song, essays and recording notes. Among the artists included are Mississippi John Hurt, The Carter Family, Charley Patton, Jimmie Rodgers, Lydia Mendoza, Nelstone’s Hawaiians, Big Chief Henry’s String Band, Robert Johnson and many others.

AMERICAN EPIC: The Soundtrack, is a 15 song single disc anthology of songs featured in the AMERICAN EPIC film trilogy. Compiled by Lo-Max Records, it includes restored archival recordings from artists such as Memphis Jug Band, The Carter Family, Charley Patton, Joseph Falcon, Lydia Mendoza and others.

Legacy also will be making available, as digital releases, compilations of artists featured in the AMERICAN EPIC films including, AMERICAN EPIC: The Carter Family, AMERICAN EPIC: Memphis Jug Band, AMERICAN EPIC: Mississippi John Hurt, AMERICAN EPIC: Blind Willie Johnson and AMERICAN EPIC: Lead Belly as well as thematic collections including AMERICAN EPIC: Blues and AMERICAN EPIC: Country.

Columbia Records will release AMERICAN EPIC: The Sessions the soundtrack to “THE AMERICAN EPIC SESSIONS” directed by Bernard MacMahon. In “THE AMERICAN EPIC SESSIONS,” the team has reassembled the very first electrical sound recording system from the 1920s, and invited Jack White and T Bone Burnett to produce an album of recordings by twenty of today’s greatest artists. In this beautifully filmed musical feature, these artists are given the chance to pass through the portal that brought the world into the modern era.

Engineer Nicholas Bergh has reassembled this recording system from original parts and it is now the only one left in the world. The system consists of a single microphone, a towering six-foot amplifier rack, and a live record-cutting lathe, powered by a weight-driven pulley system of clockwork gears. The musicians have roughly three minutes to record their song direct to disc before the weight hits the floor. In the 1920s, they called this “catching lightning in a bottle.” All the musical performances in this film are live. The audio you hear on the soundtrack is taken directly from the discs they were recorded to, with no editing or enhancements.

AMERICAN EPIC: The Sessions, soundtrack features: Alabama Shakes, The Americans, Ana Gabriel, Ashley Monroe, The Avett Brothers, Beck, Bettye LaVette, Bobby Ingano, Elton John, Frank Fairfield, Jerron “Blind Boy” Paxton, Los Lobos, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Nas, Pokey LaFarge, Raphael Saadiq, Rhiannon Giddens, Steve Martin and Edie Brickell, Taj Mahal, Jack White, and Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard.

.

There will also be a companion book - American Epic: The First Time America Heard Itself.

You can take a black guy to Nashville from right out of the cotton fields with bib overalls, and they will call him R&B. You can take a white guy in a pin-stripe suit who’s never seen a cotton field, and they will call him country. ~ O. B. McClinton

George Martin's son Giles is going to be on tonight's Jimmy Fallon show to talk about the box set. The episode might be on NBC's site once the show is over, or a clip on the Tonight Show's Youtube channel.

50 Years Later, Beatles' 'Sgt. Pepper' Back in Top Three
6/4/2017 by Keith Caulfield Billboard

The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band returns to the chart, re-entering at No. 3 with 75,000 units (up 2,062 percent) with 71,000 in traditional album sales (up 3,889 percent). It is the highest rank for the former No. 1 album since the Dec. 30, 1967-dated chart, when the set also placed at No. 3.

The album bounces back to the tally courtesy of its 50th anniversary reissue on May 26. The album was reissued in a variety of configurations, including some with a bevy of bonus tracks. It spent a total of 15 weeks atop the list back in 1967 -- the most weeks at No. 1 for any of The Beatles’ 19 chart-topping albums.

Sgt. Pepper’s’ re-entry also grants The Beatles its highest rank on the chart in more than 16 years. The band has been absent from the top three since the March 10, 2001-dated list, when the greatest hits album 1 was No. 3. (The album had previously spent eight weeks at No. 1.)

eek Man! I thought Vanity's solo albums had more of a chance of seeing a CD reissue than Appolloni's solo album. Was this originally released on Warner Brothers? If so, I wonder why they decided to go with this instead of the "Apollonia 6" album?

Seafaring Strangers: Private Yacht (2 LPs / CD / FLAC / MP3)
release: June 17, 2017

With pop music’s volume knob adjusted for deflation in the early '70s, softness begat smoothness. Crewmen arrived from the worlds of jazz, folk, rock, and soul, all peddling a product that was sincere, leisurely, and lofty. A sound that was buoyant, crisp, defined. Sometimes classified as West Coast—and, later, Yacht Rock—the compass points of our Private Yacht expedition are the blue-eyed harmonies of Hall and Oates, the cocaine-dusted Fender Rhodes of Michael McDonald, and the combover strums of James Taylor. Here, at the glassy apex of rock’s softer side, 20 strong swimmers are gathered together. An album for both relaxation and reflection, where listeners can enjoy the present, a cool breeze, and a taste of the good life.

Jim Spencer - Wrap Myself Up In Your Love
Michael Miglio - Never Gonna Let You Go
Ned Doheny - Before I Thrill Again (demo)
Johnny Gamboa - That Good Old Feeling Back Again
Solenoid - Acquaintances (Promo Version)
Steps - Your Burning Love
Jeff Harrington - Kristi
Paul Skyland - Give Me Your Love
Rob Galbraith - Tell Me With Your Eyes (Just Be You)
Calvin Johnson - Dance Of Love
Salty Miller - One More Time
Canyon - Country Lovin'
A.J. Loria - Please Analyze
Gary Marks - Sailing
Country Comfort - To Be Lonely
Madness - Madam Operator
Chuck Senrick - Don't Be So Nice
Breathers - Don't It Make You Feel
Damon Danielson - How Long Has It Been
Rudy Norman - Back To The Streets
