Ed Sheeran rips off another song

Ed Sheeran has given the writers behind TLC‘s 90s hit ‘No Scrubs’ a credit on his single ‘Shape Of You’ after comparisons were made between the two songs.

‘Shape Of You’, which features on his new album ‘÷’, was originally written for Rihanna. Harry Potter actor Rupert Grint recently de...its lyrics.

Now the BBC reports that ‘No Scrubs’ writers and former Xscape members Kandi Burruss and Tameka Cottle, plus the song’s producer Kevin Briggs, now appear on US copyright website ASCAP as co-writers of the song. Previously, only Sheeran and co-writers Steve Mac and Snow Patrol’s Johnny McDaid were listed.

Although no reason has been given for the new writing credits, it had previously been pointed out how the two songs sounded similar. NME has reached out to Sheeran’s PR for a comment.

Personally I can't hear how they're alike. In any case, yes he's overhyped. Give me Patrick Stump any day over this dude.

Can someone describe exactly which parts were deemed alike, so I don't have to do any research. Thanks!

Eh.

Just avoiding another frivilous lawsuit.

I'm so happy I don't write popular songs.

Apparenly almost every smash hit is hit with a lawsuit.

So all 3 times were frivolous or maybe he is a no -talent hack being jammed down our throats.

He could have settled with a lump sum of money rather then co-credit and it does go by the note and chords so musicolgist must have told him to give up the credit.

I don't think he's overhyped, but he certainly has an audience. And in today's market where hardly anyone would get on a stage, create their own loop with their voice and a guitar, then sing an entire song over it - he has talent. And that's not just because he has a loop machine, or whatever it's called. (Alicia Keys attempted the same thing recently, but hers seemed awkward overall.) He was selling out stadiums on his last tour, and had just a guitar. No band, no big smoke & mirrors show. Some LED graphics of course. There are people will full blown shows that aren't selling those sorts of tickets.

I think he can be seen as bland in a market where everything is so filtered, compressed, altered, pitch-corrected, and synchronized to death. Think about someone like Jill Scott who brought back great R&B music in a then-landscape where there was just so much mediocre and uninspired music out there. Her album, Who Is Jill Scott? was the epitome of her showing up singing, and saying "THIS BITCH, THAT'S WHO!"

While Ed is not Jill, he certain has a cornered part of the market that people have forgotten about, or ignored in favor of a fucking worthless Rihanna track. I'm not a huge fan of his, but I don't hate him either. I'll listen to a song if it's playing.

As far as the song - I can see where some could draw similarities, but in general I don't think it's lawsuit worthy. There have certainly been bigger offenders. And I'd agree that him adding whoever's name to the songwriting credit is probably to avoid litigation, in a society where money is God. I remember The Rolling Stones doing that with kd lang for "Mixed Emotions" because some of it sounded like "Constant Craving" in the chorus. It was obligatory, at most.

"eye don’t really care so much what people say about me because it is a reflection of who they r."

So it's legal to use the same instrumental and not change 20% of the lyrics?

Once again he gave them credit and it is his third time doing it. No courts were involved.

That just sounds like she's singing No Scrubs to the tune of Shape of You!

Can you provide a news source link from where you got your info?

On the BBC it says:
"It's not yet been confirmed by either party why the additional writing credits have been given".

Wow, I just listened again. This is really money grabbing. I mean, you'd have to move and ammend every note to make it the same melody. I'm a working musician, so it's not hard to get my head around what each melody is doing.

Pretty fucked that someone can get credit for that.

I guess 'Murica is built on dubious ownership claims!

Ed Sheeran is still in court for ripping off "Let's Get It On" (good! That one is blatant).

What is so special about Ed Sheeran? When is prince.org going to devote a thread to this guy? He sucks.

I personally don't hear TLC's chord progression moving or playing the same either, so for me that is two mismatched elements not worth a lawsuit.

.
But "saaaaales" and "breaking recorddddds"....
.
Weren't we just celebrating MC Hammer and his artistic accomplishments on the .org? Is Ed's porcelain and red that offensive to you? I thought some of y'all lived to justify artistry based on commercial success. If MC Hammer is underrated what does that make Ed Sheeran? Both apparently make their name jacking other less "talented" "artists" like TLC and Kandi Burress lol
if it was just a dream, call me a dreamer 2
