Here is another example. Although he didn't write this one either, it was very popular back in the day when independent DJs used to play whole albums and deep cuts.

Get down, baby

To the funky, funky, funky groove

Get down, baby

Let the light reflect upon your natural mood

Get down, baby

Your creative mood shall express itself

Get down, baby

After life and desire there is nothing left

We're all children of the world

A hungry man in search for a hungry girl

It's strange, so plain we're all cannibal

The most wasted and two faced of all animals

Get down, get down

Get down, get down

Take my soul, baby

When you reel I can feel so much desire

Take my soul, baby

Life unfolds from my soul when you start a fire

So get down, just get down

Get down, baby

As the rhythm should follow through your able soul

Get down, baby

Play the part like a pro in a perfect role

Get down, baby

To the funky, funky, funky groove

Get down, baby

Let the light reflect upon your natural mood

One can never point out the actual path

Of the mysterious need in a female's heart

Man can only follow not knowing how

His faith might erupt [Incomprehensible]

So get down,

get down

Get down,

get downGet down

Get down, baby

To the funky, funky, funky groove

Get down, baby

Let the light reflect upon your natural move

Take my soul, baby

Your creative mood shall express itself

Take my soul, baby

After life and desire there is nothing left

Get down,

get down

Get down,

get down

Get down,

get down

Get down,

get down

Mayfield wrote Get Down.

I thought so too, so I checked. I never make a statement without doing so.

I´m a big fan of Curtis Mayfield and I agree with you that he is one of the most underrated American musicians ever.

I like his love songs, his spiritual songs, and of course his political songs.

He was a very gifted man with a great voice and he was a great composer and arranger.

To this day I have no idea why he doesn´t get the same recognition as those mentioned by the OP.

I listen to Curtis Mayfield´s music all the time, and I make sure that younger generations get to know him.

" I´d rather be a stank ass hoe because I´m not stupid. Oh my goodness! I got more drugs! I´m always funny dude...I´m hilarious! Are we gonna smoke?"

Baddest soundtrack in the history of music. cool the arrangement on this song is sick, and the lyrics capture the essence of the film brilliantly.

I agree. I was just discussing this the other day. The Super Fly soundtrack is GENIUS!!! It IS the baddest soundtrack EVER!!! Curtis Mayfield was very underrated and extremely gifted and talented.

I play at tye least, 2 Curtis Mayfield songs on my radio show when I'm on the air. Always a Curtis solo and a Curtis era Impressions tune. And then I usually play a Gene Chandler or Major Lance tune (2 artist he worked with a lot) not to mention Jerry Butler.

Curtis deserves tons of praise because he was musically just as great as Stevie, Marvin and co. He is very underrated yet he made the classics "Curtis" and "Superfly" LPs. Not only that he made "Roots", "There's No Place like America Today" and "Back to the World". He also worked with Aretha, Gladys and the Pips and his Curtom label had some talented acts on it too. What is remarkable about Curtis is his final album he recorded whilst being paralysed from the neck down. That must have took a lot of effort but "New world order" was a great return to form.

eek This I did not know. A testament to his dedication to music!

Yep. Curtis had a lighting rig fall on him on stage in the early 90s which sadly paralysed him from the next down. The New World Order album was recorded in some instances line by line and I imagine an exhausting process for Curtis. If you listen to the songs you can hear it's also a bit of a struggle for him vocally but it's really inspiring that he wanted to record another album despite his debilitating condition. Roger Troutman, Aretha and Lauren Hill are also on the record. Lauyrn debuts on one song which I think was released as a single too. IIRC it's Hete But I'm Gone.

Christgau agrees:

Curtis Mayfield & the Impressions: The Anthology 1961-1977 [MCA, 1992]
The phat drumming and bar-band soul of Shanachie's People Get Ready tribute do Mayfield's delicacy a disservice. There's no gutbucket or hogmaw or Mississippi mud in his groove--unmooring gospel verities or floating off into space-case funk, he's so far out there that Johnny Pate's elaborate, light-bottomed orchestrations never trip him up. I'd curtail the juvenilia to salvage more of his radically sporadic solo career, but a songwriter this gifted has no trouble filling two CDs, and he's his own aptest vocal interpreter. Great unknown guitarist, too. A+

He's right, Mayfield avoided gut bucket blues like the plague. lol

Curtis has some blues songs. A lot actually. "Now You're Gone" is straight up blues. We People Darker Than Blue is a blues song.
