Patti LaBelle to Release First-Ever Jazz Album

gkgFBrO.jpg

3/2017

Patti LaBelle will release her first studio album in more than eight years, Bel Hommage [belle oh-MAHJ], on May 5.

The record marks her first foray into jazz, and features 13 of her favorite standards.

"I've been saying for years that I was going to record a jazz album, but I hadn't taken that leap of faith to try something different," says Patti. "Now I'm so happy that I did because I really love all of these songs and I pray that everyone else will too!" The album's title is French for "Beautiful Tribute."

LaBelle's rendition of "Moody's Mood for Love," a 1952 song by Eddie Jefferson, features a guest appearance by contemporary R&B singer/songwriter Kem.

Bel Hommage is available for pre-order now on CD and as a digital download.

Here is the track list of Bel Hommage:

"The Jazz in You"
"Wild Is the Wind"
"Moanin'"
"Till I Get It Right"
"Moody's Mood for Love"
"Softly as I Leave You"
"Peel Me a Grape"
"Don't Explain"
"I Can Cook Too"
"The Folks Who Live on the Hill"
"Go to Hell"
"Song for Old Lovers"
"Here's to Life"

Good to see her back. Not crazy about an album full of cover tunes but since this is the first jazz album of her career, maybe she will not just stick too close to the originals and instead make them her own. Personally, i would have like to have seen her record a jazz album back in the 80s or 90s when she could still effortlessly hit those notes.

Oh shit that is what I am talking about. I will check it out once it is release. I love some jazz and I hope is smooth.

I am happy that she is going strong in her 70s and is doing a good job controlling her diabetes.

The album was done about 3yrs ago, like most Legends she talked about it for the longest, she just needed to plan how to distribute it...Apparently her label is doing a portion of the distributing...I never knew Patti had an Independent label until the press release started to roll out for Bel Hommage....

The WEIRD thing is MANY Celebs work out CD Deals with Walmart...That Market has been covered my Many including Aretha....Patti is the Official Walmart Pie Queen and NO ONE in her camp sat down with The Powers That Be at Walmart and worked out a Phat check? A $1 to $3 Million bonus check would have been pocket change for the Retail Giant...What they don't make back in CD sells they'll make back with them Patti Pies...It's a Win-Win-Wash...

Patti is Great at branding herself but there have been some missed opportunities that had me scratching my head. Patti's Son/Manager is watching the Work/bookings/ TV-Gigs fall into Patti's lap becuz she says "yes" to just about everything that makes sense...Patti's Management Team did not go after Walmart to carry Patti's products the Bakery Execs went after her becuz of her Celeb status....

At 72 Patti is sitting on a Gold Mine with Walmart and other ventures but I Feel her Management Team ain't ready for The BIG leagues...

Patti does not have a JAZZ voice, I don't know why people think when the music they usually do is not cutting it, to go do a jazz album...

Chaka Khan
Smokey Robinson

didn't Rod Stewart do a jazz album

now

I never knew Smokey recorded a jazz album. Chaka's "Echoes of An Era" is a jazz MASTERPIECE!

I think Walmart learned their lesson after they cut Aretha a million dollar check for that dull album "A Woman Falling Out of Love" and it only ended up selling maybe 100 copies. lol

Im only purchasing this due to the fact there will be no cover of "My Funny Valentine"

Way too many covers (and some terrible) of that song.

I thought of a cool marketing trick that Patti and Wal-Mart could do.Pair her new CD with one of her pies lol Buy the CD and get a free Patti LaBelle sweet potato pie to go with it,as part of the deal.

lol I have a feeling Patti don't really care how much this album sells. Did you know she is selling sheets, pillow cases and comforters thru Walmart? She even got a couple of pound cakes on their shelves. Patti is smart. She know she can't make money in record sales so she gotta slap her name on some other retail items. Patti know how to get her hustle on. lol

Just call it a covers album and do it Patti's way, don't call it Jazz, there are people who are sold out to the artform, and have been that way their whole lives.

Without Jazz, there is no Funk [especially the horn-driven Funk]. That alone is exactly why I have no problem with Patti doing a jazz album.

Disagree with what?

My statement concerning Chaka Khan is 'I don't know why people think when their music is not cutting it, that they have to do a jazz album'

I liked Chaka's album though

I was just mentioning a bunch of people who aren't jazz artists that did a jazz album

lol I think she will. The last few TV performances I saw from Patti, she was kinda struggling but she has sense enough to stay in her current range instead of embarrassing herself by miserably failing to attempt the vocal acrobats she used to do so effortlessly. I think we are going to see a much more restrained Patti on this upcoming album.
