I think Elvis and The Beatles would take issue with that ...

From a pure entertainment, visual (videos) & Dancing prespective I'd agree.

From a music perspective.......I would not agree.

If the number of times your song has been covered by other recording artists is an indication of
how influential you've been as a pop musician, then Michael Jackson is not more influential than
Paul McCartney/John Lennon.

Sorry, but MJ being the most influential pop artist/icon ever is not a fact.

There's no argument being made against Jackson's legacy as an influential recording artist.

Why does his catalog continue to sell so well around the world then? He constantly has albums in the charts of the largest countries. If it was only the videоs, his music would not have a future, it would have remained in the past, but no, he is still one of the best-selling artists of the era of the 70s-90s.

He is not one of the best selling aritst of the 70's...not even close ! Stop with BS ....

Not only that, his albums out sell the current artists. Last year he was hailed as the best selling pop male artist by Billboard because of his sales. He has been dead for 8 years now and his music is still selling, anybody arguing MJ is not known for his music is a straight hater by denying his legitimate receipts and impact. BAD was just certified a diamond album a month ago for crying out loud!

Bad an Album that was released in 1987 went diamond in the US almost 30 years after it's release ?...Adele's lastest album went diamond in the US in under one years time. Elvis has been dead for 40 years and he still moves over a I million albums a year (phyiscal not digital). If you read were Jackson's revune comes from, you would know that the majority of his estate's income comes from the Beatles catalog. Prince and Bowie have replace Jackson and Elvis in music sales since their deaths. They are selling more music then these two - who were the previous top selling dead musicans.

Michael doesn't own the SONY AVG catalog anymore and MJ has two diamond albums. He has surpassed Elvis Presley in sales. Billboard confirmed it. Michael charts the Billboard charts every year and sales millions of copies each year. One poster has been posting these receipts so you dont have to take my word for it. MJ has out sold both Prince and David Bowie not sure why you even mentioned them. MJ is the biggest selling solo artist of all time.

Maybe you should better analyze the information .... I meant that he is an artist who came from this era.
He continues to have high sales NOW. We can not compare his current success with Adele or Taylor Swift, but he's still one of the best selling among his peers.

Prince and Bowie have replace Jackson and Elvis in music sales since their deaths. They are selling more music then these two - who were the previous top selling dead musicans.

Comparisons should be adequate then, I think ... how many albums MJ sold in 2009?
How many albums sold Prince and Bowie in 2016?
I think, even after the end of 2017, Jackson will again sell more of his back catalog ... we'll see.

I respect both Madonna and MJ, but I would have to say that MJ is more influential.

- Thriller is the best selling album of all time

- The video for Thriller is widely considered to be the greatest music video of all time.

--

Personally, I think that one of the reasons MJ is more popular/influential than Madonna and Prince is that his music is overall more "family friendly." I remember in high school gravitating to MJ's music over Prince's because MJ's music was more PG than Prince's. There's really nothing offensive on Thriller. Billie Jean's content is rather adult, but it's such a classic song that the popularity of BJ overcomes the lyrical content.

--

I think that part of the reason Prince and Madonna are less influential than MJ is because their music is not as family friendly.

Regarding Prince, I was scared to buy PR in high school because I knew that Darling Nikki would not be acceptable to my parents. Even last summer when I played PR on a road trip with my parents, I told my parents to skip DN. The next time I come home, my mom wants to watch PR, and I told her I will bring the DVD with me, but warned her that she may not like everything in the movie (e.g. treatment of women, DN scene).

--

Madonna certainly is the most influential female pop star in the English-speaking world. The length of her career is impressive. She was still putting out hits in the late 1990s and early 2000s with albums like Ray of Light and Music, and I remember her music from the late 90s and early 2000s well because those were my adolescent/teenage years. She has a lot of explicit music and music videos, think Justify My Love, and videos for Like a Prayer. Madonna pushed a lot of boundaries for women in the 80s and 90s. She is certainly more Prince than Michael Jackson.

--

I do think it is important to note that while MJ may be more influential, I think that he also has more blemishes on his legacy in terms of his personal life than either Madonna or Prince do. I remember him saying that he only had 2 plastic surgeries, and that is a load of crap. The sexual abuse allegations are the most damning. While I continue to love MJ's music, I am very hesitant to celebrate him personally the way that I celebrate Prince, Stevie Wonder, and Janet Jackson because the sexual abuse allegations really bother me, especially that he was accused repeatedly of sexual abuse. The fact that he settled with some of the accusers out of court leads me to believe that he paid them off so that they would keep quiet.

--

So MJ is definitely more influential than Madonna, but I think his image is also more tarnished than hers.

All hater means is that i don't have the same blind biizzare adulation for a man who used to get young boys drunk, knock out saccharine pop songs, and mutilate his face while he was off his head on drugs.

Nah, in this context a hater is someone, who's incapable of objectively judging an artist based on his work, rather than let his dislike for the artist cloud the opinion on the work. Seriously, you showed your colors. None of what you're saying can be taken serious. You really discredited every one of your posts on the topic. What you think about Michael Jackson the person has no bearing on the topic at all. Just because you dislike someone, doesn't take away his influence on the rest of the world.

Like I said, if influence is determined in some form or fashion by how many times other recording
artists have recorded your songs, than McCartney and Lennon are more influential than Michael
Jackson.

Jackson could be all of those things yet still an influential recording artist. Instead of basing your
opinion on ad hominem attacks, might you add something constructive to the conversation without
any clear bias? Yes, this board is slavishly devoted to him, but Michael Jackson's work does have
some artistic merit.

Get your facts straight. He was accused two times, that's it. He settled with one Jordan Chandler. Not some but just one, and it wasn't because he wanted to, actually he did want to face those allegations in front of a jury.
